5.1 Group Activity Yahtzee!

Name:

In this activity, you and your group will play Yahtzee! and discover the experimental probabilities of particular scenarios. 1. Begin by playing a (modied) game of Yahtzee! among your group. The object of the game is to achieve the highest score. The game consists of 13 rounds in which each person takes a turn rolling the ve dice. You must score the roll in one of the 13 categories. 1s is the total of the 1s you have rolled, 2 is the total of the 2s you have rolled, etc (for instance if you rolled 2,3,4,4,5 you could score this as 2 points for 2s, 3 points for 3s, 8 points for 4s or 5 points for 5s). Three of a kind is the sum of all the dice but 3 of the dice must be the same number, four of a kind is the sum of all the dice but 4 of the dice must be the same number. A full house is a three of a kind and a pair (for instance 2,2,2,5,5), which scores 25 points. A small straight is a sequence of 4 dice in order (1,2,3,4 or 2,3,4,5 or 3,4,5,6), which scores 30 points. A large straight is a sequence of 5 dice in order (1,2,3,4,5 or 2,3,4,5,6) which scores 40 points. A Yahtzee! is all ve dice the same number, which scores 50 points. Chance is simply the sum on the dice. Use the following table as your scoreboard. Score Aces (Sum of 1s) Twos (Sum of 2s) Threes (Sum of 3s) Fours (Sum of 4s) Fives (Sum of 5s) Sixes (Sum of 6s) Upper Sub-total 3 of a kind (Sum on dice) 4 of a kind (Sum on dice) Full house (25 points) Small Straight (30 points) Large Straight (40 points) Yahtzee (50 points) Chance (Sum on dice) Lower Sub-total Upper Sub-total Total

2. Now we will look at experimental probabilities of some of these rolls. Roll the dice 100 times. After each roll, determine what the score would be for Aces, Twos, Threes, Fours, Fives, and Sixes for that roll. Record your results. (For example if you rolled 1, 1, 3, 3, 6 I would mark that I scored a 2 for Aces, a 0 for Twos, a 6 for Threes, a 0 for Fours, a 0 for Fives and a 6 for Sixes.) Aces Score Frequency Probability 0 1 2 3 4 5 Threes Score Frequency Probability 0 3 6 9 12 15 Fives Score Frequency Probability 0 5 10 15 20 25 Twos Score Frequency Probability 0 2 4 6 8 10 Fours Score Frequency Probability 0 4 8 12 16 20 Sixes Score Frequency Probability 0 6 12 18 24 30

3. What are the experimental probabilities for each of the totals? Add these entries to the above tables. 4. For 12 points of homework extra credit (two points per category), what are the theoretical probabilities of each of the possible scores for the six dierent upper level categories (Aces, Twos, Threes, Fours, Fives, and Sixes)? (Submit on a separate sheet of paper, with work!) 5. For 15 points of homework extra credit (3 points per category), what are the theoretical probabilities of getting a three of a kind? a four of a kind? a full house? a small straight? a large straight? (Submit on a separate sheet of paper, with work!)
