Ekert, Carmen ENG2012 Professor Silverstein January 31, 2012 1. "The tree has not died. It waits.

" What Sinclair means? When Sinclair says, "The tree has not died. It waits" it could mean a few things, for one, the tree could be waiting for spring to come around since the leaves have fallen. It is time for the tree to hibernate and go to sleep for sometime, its almost meditating. That would have of course been more of the literal meaning. A more symbolic meaning could be that Sinclair is talking about himself as the tree because everything around him has no meaning and has no effect on him so he is like a tree going into himself and waiting for the time to be right. 2. "It" waits what is the "it"? What is the tree waiting for? The "It" could be spring. According to the text, everything around the tree doesnt matter to it, the leaves have fallen and the tree stands alone, not dead. This could mean that winter has come and instead of dying, the tree just waits for the time to be right so that it may come out of its medication for the Spring time so that it may "be" again with the world. Spring could also be another way of saying a new beginning since the tree grows new leaves and comes back to full life again into the world. 3. How is the tree and Sinclair similar? Why does he see himself going through the same process? The tree and Sinclair are similar because both are going through existensial journeys of sorts and both dont die, but they wait for the time to be right again. Sinclair is going through an existensial journey because now is the time he is going to be in solitude, alone from the rest of the world. The tree naturally goes through an existensial journey as well and is an existensial like Sinclair. The tree stands alone always and trees are always individuals because no two tree is alike, they are authentic in their root, branch and leaf growth, they grow out of free will anywhere, sidewalks, highways, cracks and they go through an existensial journey in the fall when their leaves fall off and they go into a meditation, waiting for the spring. Sinclair and the tree understand each others processes. Sinclair seems himself going through the same process the tree is going through because both are going through a time where nothing around them give them any satisfaction. For Sinclair, everything around him has changed such as the behavior towards his family, the garden has no scent, the woods dont attract him and the world around him seems like a hand me down. The tree in the fall, everything has changed because everything changes color, the weather gets cooler, the rain doesnt phase the tree, neither does sun or the frost of winter coming, the tree recedes into itself like Sinclair. Both are not emotionless and dead to the world, rather they are patiently waiting for the right time to come so that they may be "alive" to the world again.
