Five of us did this exercise last month and came up with the following list

And we remembered them because of these qualities Is that the kind of teacher you had in mind?

While many were probably thinking about your high school teachers, the same points are still important to adults. Research shows adults need: Motivation to learn - Appropriate level of engagement to help them retain what they learned - Reinforcement of good behavior Be given practical ways to apply their learning -> ways they can transfer their knowledge to the real world So lets go through these briefly

- show them the big picture why they need the information youre giving them - telling someone how to fix a car while youre taking out their appendix isnt really relevant! -For doctors often times its easy to motivate

Why do we do what we do? Its for the health of these children thats our goal. We want them to be healthy, happy, to have a bright future.

And Inspire them with examples and stories how skills, your skills, changed this little boys life! Motivate them

And Inspire them with examples and stories how skills, your skills, changed this little boys life! Motivate them

If students have some part in their learning, it keeps them interested and helps them remember the information better Part of engaging them means

what experiences and skills they already have. Volunteer comes in and talks to us like were in medical school, how do we feel?

Talking about different techniques of plating bacteria in the lab or the advances in bariatric medicine They lose us Understanding their level of knowledge & experience this is important!

Negative & positive dont do that again! Great job! Can do reinforce behavior through individual feedback, group discussions, rewards Remember the learners knowledge and skill level dont expect too much or too little from them.

so the new knowledge or skill is put into or transferred into practice

Motivation to learn - Appropriate level of engagement to help them retain what they learned - Reinforcement of positive behavior - Practical ways to apply their learning -> ways they can transfer their knowledge to the real world

People look to us to be good doctors Were really busy!!!

Want to review one model for clinical teaching that can help us Look at your handout Elements of motivate, engage, reinforce and apply in here

Often times we cant wait for the junior to commitment feels responsible and can enjoy problem-solving, helps process information better Level of knowledge this is important!

Trying to find out what?

Look at your handout

After 2: Two things you shouldnt do in your probing Thats stupid

Trying to find out why? Why did you chose that diagnosis? Why did you make that treatment plan?

Look at your handout

Teaching comes just in helping the student think through their decisions Remember teach at their level of knowledge/skill Insult speak down to, Overwhelm over their level of understanding

Look at your handout

So make sure they know what was right Established=habits

Very specific thought about the patients ability to by the medication and thought about the patients kidney function

So that they dont repeat them

Sometimes this is all we do but how does it make the student feel? Discouraged. provides no instruction on how to manage the case better- make your comments constructive/helpful

You could be right that this childs symptoms are due to a URI, but without checking the ears, you could easily overlook an otitis media. At a minimum, a missed ear infection will result in a cranky baby and perhaps unnecessary visits. At worst, the infection could lead to mastoiditis. So try to include an ear examination on every patient with URI symptoms

What do you think? Why? What would you give? Why? Always ask about TB contacts Under five amox for s. pneumo; over 5 macrolide for mycoplasma, chlamydia and s. pneumo Unsure at this point, can check CXR or CBC >15,000 more likely bacterial

I think as you try this, it will become easy and more of a habit

Motivation which includes setting goals and recognizing their level of experience. Engagement so they can retain or remember the information Reinforcement of good behaviors Practical application of the new skill or knowledge so they can transfer that knowledge into practice. And we can do that through our five microskills

Get a commitment - Probe for supporting evidence - Teach general concepts Reinforce what was done right - Correct mistakes
