PROJECT MENU COMMENT HANDOUT


Thank you participating in the Greenville Community Plan. Include your contact information if you would like to receive future correspondence. We will not share any personal information. Below is a list of programs and projects that developed from resident input collected at public meetings held for the Greenville Community Plan. Please review and provide comments in the column on the right. We will incorporate all comments received by 5PM, May 13, 2012.

Category Project Concept Develop more After School Programs that Provide Youth with Places to Learn, Recreate, and Socialize after the Regular School Day has Ended. Add summer programs when school is out. Also create temporary jobs for the youth during the summer and programming to keep them busy. Some programming should expand upon what the school system is doing in regarding to college preparation early on and for early child hood development to get our youth the best start. Develop Apprenticeship Programs for Youth to Provide them with the Basic Job and Workforce Skills they Need. Host Job Fairs and other Training Events that Link Residents, Young People and Area Employees with Career and other Work Opportunities. Create job creation through selfemployment and local business development (Link residents with local contractors/developers to implement activities in the plan, identify trainings so that they are ready to take advantage of opportunities). Work with Employers in the Region to Create Internship Programs and Other Entry Level Opportunities for Out-ofWork Residents. Develop volunteer programs for youth, adults and seniors. Work with the County Employment and Training Program and Area Colleges and Universities to Bring an Educational and Job Training Center to the MLK Corridor. There are other sources of training outside of government and colleges. I.E. Customer Service Skills Center, Women Rising Hotel Initiative, Rising Tide Entrepreneurial training. Provide classes on issues like improving interviewing skills. Comments

Project Concept Develop Life Skills Educational Campaign that encourages Educational and College Preparedness, Reduce Teen Pregnancy, Discourage Drug Use and Promote Other Critical Life Skills. Assist young mothers as a focus group. Provide Bullying Awareness programs Other 1 - Align future jobs and current education to fill jobs not filled-- Create opportunities for employment from activities within the plan (ie Youth Build), Help local GCs increase capacity. Create Neighborhood Gardens where Residents can Grow their Own Flowers, Plants and Vegetables Work with Area Medical and Dental Service Providers to Provide a Mobile Health Van that can Serve Neighborhoods along MLK Drive Provide a Neighborhood Guide and On-Line Directory of Social Service Programs and Contacts that local Residents can use to Get the Services They Need. Educate citizens on who to call regarding city issues/concerns/etc (civics) Expand the Network of Community and Recreational Facilities and Services for Neighborhood Youth, Adults and seniors - Better use of existing facilities (ie Mary Bethune Community Center). Revitalize neighborhood parks. Provide senior activities and community facilities for seniors. Organize Annual Health Fairs and Health Screenings at Shopping Plazas along MLK Drive Create Additional Day Care Facilities for People Needing Convenient Locations to Leave their Children during Working Hours Promote Code Enforcement to Address Covered Windows, Building Safety, and other potential Hazards in the Corridor. Review appropriateness of zoning in all areas of the plan, particularly MLK Drive. Promote and Find Resources for Faade Improvements for Businesses that Have Less than Adequate Store Fronts Continue to Beautify the Street Corridor with Banners, Flower Boxes, Benches, or Other Colorful Plantings and Improvements Improve Pedestrian Crossings at Key Intersections so People Can Move Safely to and from Shopping and Other Destinations. Strategies to discourage loitering. Maintain street pavements and street lines. Install Bus Shelters at Designated Bus Stops along the Corridor Provide Specially Marked Lanes so Bicycles can Safely Travel on MLK Drive. We need to have the businesses

Host Street Fairs, Festivals, and other Special Events in and around the MLK Drive Corridor to provide a greater Sense of Community Work with Jersey City officials to Enforce the Abandoned Properties Bill that encourages owners to Fix their Homes or Sell them Rehabilitate Vacant Structures in Residential Corridors and along MLK Drive Develop a Partnership with the City to Report Code Violations and Strictly Enforce Property Maintenance Codes and Ordinances Fill Vacant Lots along MLK Drive with Mixed Use Development and Affordable Housing Opportunities Promote Home Ownership for First Time Home Buyers of mixed incomes. Expand education programs that focus on first time homeownership before purchasing. Acquire and Rehabilitate Foreclosed Properties. Foreclosure prevention and mitigation programs. Advocate for Mortgage Products that help Existing and Prospective Home Owners Buy and Maintain their Properties Develop Bus Shelters and Safe Places for bus riders along MLK Drive to serve the New Jersey Transit Bus Lines Promote Improved Safety on the Light Rail System
