0 Problem statement
I found that the standard five pupils of SJK(T) Ladang Midlands, are facing problems to write proper gramatical sentences with the given guided words .Writing is the skill most student are least proficient in. Despite that, they are unable to develop their ideas. They are a unable to write using correct spelling and punctuation as well. Writing in English is least rewarding them as they have little use for it. There are very few social uses for writing in English in the school period. These are reasons why pupils are demotivated to write proper sentences. Only pupils who see that they can succeed are putting in effort and interest necessary to succeed. The poor students dislike writing in English and they perform poorly in it.This is because of their poor command of English and repeated experiences of failure. The purpose of this study is to make the pupils to write proper sentences using correct spelling and punctuation marks in interesting writing. The first step is to evaluate the pupils ways so that they enjoy

ability to write in a pre-test .

Secondly, pupils will be exposed to model sentences to enhance their understanding of sentence structures, punctuation and spelling with dictation. Then, pupils will study a series of picture and do various exercises using pictures such as 1. unjumble sentences and write them based on picture. 2. Make three simple sentences based on a picture. 3. Complete sentences with pictorial representations.

2.0 Research objective/research question . 2.1 Objective 2.1.1 To study the effectiveness of using dictation to teach sentence structure, punctuation and grammar to pupils. 2.1.2 To study the effectiveness of pictures to teach sentence constructions to pupils 2.2 Research questions 2.2.1 How effectively the dictation method can help pupils to understand the sentence structure, punctuation and grammar . 2.2.2 How effectively the pictures can help poor pupils to construct sentences. 3.0 Target group The target group for this action research is from year five pupils of an urban primary school in Shah Alam. Their details appear in table 2 and 3. Class Sample size (n) Boys Year 5 34 11 19 Girls 15 Age Gender

4.0 Suggested Action This research wil focus on ways to improve pupils ability to write proper sentences in composition. There are several techniques to be implemented to improve the poor pupils. The first part of the research will focus on dictation to enable pupils to understand different sentence structures. At the second part of the research, I will use pictures and guided sentences / words , that will support them to write. The time frame to complete this research is 6 weeks. The steps are as below. 4.1 Pre- exam Pupils will be given a pre-exam to identify their ability to write sentences. These data will be used for comparison purpose after the research to see the results. 4.2 Dictation This is a useful techniques to provide models of sentence structures and the way text is organized that are commonly used in writing. It allows pupils to practise spelling and punctuation as well.It is also a suitable activity for pupils at various levels as long as the text for dictation is carefully selected. 4.3 Pictures and guided sentences The pictures and sentences can be used in various ways to improve pupils ability to write sentences. Pupils will be fully guided with the pictures and example sentences at the beginning level where they will have to unjumble sentences based on pictures,complete sentences with pictorial representations. They will be slowly exposed to less guided exercises using pictures and guided words with exercises such as pictures with skeleton outline/short notes to make sentences. 4.4 Post exam A post exam will be conducted to test their ability to write simple sentences based on picture and guided words.
