Habitat for Humanity By: Lauren Llantero

My name is Lauren and I will be talking about Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide project that started in 1976. The founders are Millard Fuller and his wife, Linda. They began this project in Koinonia Farm in Americus, Georgia. Habitat for Humanity builds houses for people that lives in slums, or that dont have any housing. They are helping a lot of people because nearly 2 billion people are in slums, and over 100 million people are homeless! Now, the main places they build are in Africa, Asia, and the 2 Americas. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit Christian organization. So far, Habitat has built more than 400 thousand houses and helped more than 2 million people worldwide. People also like to volunteer like adults, and even children at schools! They volunteer because its fun to build and paint houses. They also join for the experience, to help other people, and to make a difference. One famous person that contributed to Habitat was George W. Bush. He was a spokesperson for Habitat and has helped build houses in Texas. Habitats most famous volunteers are the former US president Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn. The founder of Habitat is Millard Fuller, and the co-founder is his wife, Linda. They made this organization because they wanted to focus their lives on God by doing something different. Another reason they did this is because they wanted to shelter and help the less fortunate people. This volunteer organization helps because they are starting to decrease poverty and each individual will get a fair chance at decent housing. Right now, they are focusing on building in Africa the most because of the poor economy and all of the developing countries. Habitat for Humanity has left positive impacts in the world. About 39% of the worlds population lives without access to improved sanitation housing. By the year of 2030, 3 billion people-about 40%- of the worlds population will need housing, and nearly 1 sixth of the world is living without possession of a decent house. By building more houses, Habitat is decreasing the amount of people living in poverty. Also, research says that people with better housing tend to do better in school. I think that Habitat for Humanity is a great organization because they build houses for those who cant afford them. With a house, people can feel proud and live a better life knowing that they have a house of their own. Jimmy Carter and his wife are the most well known people for helping, but George W. Bush also helped. Brad Pitt and Jimmy Carter were also seen helping build houses in India in 2006. Other people, like celebrities, support this organization, too. Artists like Shakira, Green Day, or Katy Perry support and build houses with Habitat. If you dont know any of them, do you know Kanye West or Taylor Swift? They also volunteer for Habitat! You can also volunteer for Habitat and build houses for other people. This volunteer organization builds tons of houses for people, and its completely free. I think that is the reason why makes it such a respectable organization.
