PH 102 Philosophy of the Human Person II II Semester, SY 2011-2012 Mrs. Rowena Anthea Azada-Palacios Final Thesis Statements.

. Develop and reflect on the thesis statements, drawing from the readings. 1. The socius is mediated through institutions. On the other hand, unlike the socius, the neighbor cannot be defined nor categorized; rather, I make myself someone's neighbor. Both relationships, however, are governed by charity. The social relationship gives charity its breadth/extensiveness, while the neighborly relationship gives charity its depth/intensity. The theme of the neighbor, nevertheless, remains the permanent critique against the innate objectification of the social relationship. 2. For Martin Buber, genuine dialogue is impeded by seeming (as opposed to being), speechifying and reduction (as opposed to personal making present), and imposition (as opposed to unfolding). Through the qualities of genuine dialogue, Buber emphasizes that truthfulness is central to authentic relationships with others. 3. Whether I live as ego or as person is hinged on whether I approach the universe from the view of self-satisfaction or from the view of engagement. Egolatry is a disposition characterized by a fascination with the self and manifested in the utilitarian treatment of others. Personality is essentially characterized by availability, that allows me to hear and heed the call of others and of the world; to respond and also to be responsible, thereby affirming myself as a source of creative action. 4. Truth is meaning. Hence, it is objective and absolute but also perspectival and subjective, transhistorical but also historical. In demonstrating such, Luijpen reveals how truth is radically human. This does not mean, however, that my seeing is never putative, because it is also possible for me to be standing in semblance. Thus, I am neither the lord nor the slave of truth; rather, I am its shepherd, guarding truth and creatively allowing it to issue forth. 5. Death is a mystery in the realm of love. The seeming absurdity of the beloved's death is overcome by a prophetic assurance that says, "You shall not die." The statement "You shall not die" is neither a fact nor a choice; rather, it is grounded in hope, which is different from desire. In its absolute form, to hope is to hope in a Transcendent. 6. Socrates' mission was exemplified in the metaphors of the gadfly, the midwife, and the electric ray. His behavior and words in the Socratic dialogues reveal him to be, for Arendt, a model thinker. He demonstrates that thinking is the unfreezing of frozen thoughts, liberating us from the strangehold of universal concepts, and allowing us to direct our attention to the particular. Arendt argues that while thinking might be dangerous, non-thinking is worse.
