Sample Elementary Lesson Plan Template

Your Name: Subject: Language Arts Lesson Title: Making Connections/Predicting Materials Needed: What Is A Huggles? Book, crayons, paper Prerequisite Skills: Students will be able to identify the title of a book. They will know to look at the pictures and text, and make predictions about the book based on what they see. Lesson Objective: 1. Provide Objectives: Students will be able to look at the title of the book What Is A Huggles? and make a prediction. Students will be able to support their answers based off of the picture clues and text that they see and hear. Time: 2 minutes 2. Demonstrate knowledge or skill: Teacher will review to the students what it means to make a prediction. Ex. A prediction is an educated guess about what is going to happen in a story based on the information shown on the title page, and based off of what we see in the pictures. Read the title out loud and model a brief prediction and explain to the students your reasoning behind it. . Since I see a picture of an animal looking at a sign reading zoo, I am going to make a prediction that a Huggles might live in the zoo and be some type of animal. Time: 2 minutes 3. Provide guided practice: Students will respond to teachers higher order thinking questions when asked about what they see in the title of the book and what they see in the pictures that lead them to their prediction. The teacher will then model a sentence starter that reads I think a Huggles is and complete the sentence. Time: 2 minutes 4. Check for understanding and provide student feedback: Students will demonstrate their understanding of the objective by completing the sentence of I think a Huggles is.., followed by drawing a picture of their prediction. Time: 3 minutes 5: Provide extended practice and transfer: Students will give brief explanation about their picture and explain the text and picture cues they used to make their prediction. Oral explanation will be used as an exit slip for students to transfer into centers. Time: As needed 6. Assessment / Closure: Tell children that tomorrow we will be reading the story, and that it will be important to keep their prediction in mind so we can compare them to the story. Time: 1 minute 7. Adaptation for students who need extra help, time, or attention? Students who need extra help may be encouraged to make a prediction with support from the teacher, by giving them oral clues about the title and what is seen in the pictures. Students will be able to finish picture independently at desk if the need more time to draw their prediction.
