Work Experience / Internship Program
Dear Employer / Supervisor:
Mahalo for partnering with WCC’s Employment Training Center in preparing Hawaii’s
workforce. We recognize the invaluable training opportunities provided employers and have
witnessed tremendous personal and professional growth in our students. It is our hope that
the following information will help you in your role as a Worksite Supervisor.
More employers are seeking out interns as a means to contribute to a student’s training and
test applicant’s work style and performance. The role of ETC’s new Work Experience Program
is to coordinate employer’s request for workforce help with a pool of students preparing to
enter the work force.
PURPOSE:
The primary purpose of the Work Experience Program is to provide an onthejob training
opportunity for students so they may:
1) gain new skills in a specific trade or variety of similar occupations
2) apply skills they’ve previously learned in training or from another job
3) gain work experience for their resume
4) receive weekly performance feedback for improvement
5) transition into a new workforce or career
6) earn letters of recommendation for their portfolio
Our interns complete an application, screening, and training process to aid in finding the
right internship work site for them.
Our Interns will:
* have completed a training program and/OR been determined to be “work ready”
* Note: the internship hours are not required to complete their employment training
program such as OAT training or Culinary Arts training.
* interview with the employer before selection for internship
* complete a resume and cover letter with ETC staff
* be assessed by ETC staff for “work readiness”
* be available to intern 2040 hours per week
* complete at least 160 work hours with monthly extensions possible for more hours
* submit weekly time sheets & evaluations

Our support for success: Students and employers are supported by ETC staff with weekly
visits, evaluations and consultations. The work experience is designed for 8 weeks with the
possibility for extensions, and can be either a paid or unpaid experience. Employers will
determine the students’ working hours and have the option to extend the 8 week program if
both parties agree. We are committed to making the work experience positive for our
partnering employers. Previous supervisors have commented:
“contributing to their training was very gratifying”
“we were able to complete projects with their help”
“It was helpful to observe their work style and skills”
“the intern was so great; we offered her a job”
“the program screening and training was very helpful”
“I appreciated the weekly monitoring by the program”
Employer Benefits. Our unique partnership with Oahu Work Links and Alu Like Inc. will
allow qualifying employers to receive compensation for ½ of a paid interns wages for a
limited time as well as tax benefits. Aside from receiving help and relief from an intern’s
work contribution; an employer is also afforded the opportunity to screen a potential
employee’s work habits without making a commitment to employment.
A careful match! A thorough understanding of the employer’s needs and the intern’s skills
and work style will aid us in recommending the most appropriate candidate to the worksite
Supervisor. The employer’s interview of the intern candidate will offer a second level of
screening to assure the two are a good match.
EMPLOYERS:
Getting started! Before the intern screening process can take place we will need to have the
following enclosed forms mailed to the Career & Workforce Development Dept. of ETC.
1) Work request form – describing your work site and identifying a supervisor
2) Affiliation agreement form – understanding of our roles and responsibilities
3) We will refer your company to Oahu Work Links or Alu Like – you may be
eligible for tax benefits and compensation of ½ of paid interns wages.

The next step to becoming an internship site: After ETC receives the affiliation agreement
and work request forms the screening process begins.
1) Program staff will announce and advertise your site as a new internship location
2) Program staff will receive recommendation forms from instructors and counselors
3) We will register likely candidates into the internship program
4) Program staff will interview and screen likely candidates
5) You will be asked to interview one or more of our nominees
6) You and the intern determine the start day and work hours.
What is expected of Employers and Intern Supervisors? We ask Intern Supervisors to
partner with WCC by understanding that the worksite is an extension of the classroom. The
Supervisor’s role is to mentor and guide the intern through the work experience by providing
constructive criticism and frequent feedback on the intern’s job performance.
We are looking for Internship Supervisors who can:
• Provide a paid or unpaid internship experience for at least 160 hours with the option to
extend.
• Provide a safe and supporting learning experience for interns.
• Develop weekly learning goals for the intern as a means to develop their skills and provide
exposure to various aspects of your company or operations.
• Inform our office of general work skills you determine to be important for your profession.
• Evaluate interns on a weekly basis on performance, character, and skills.
• Allow the intern to apply and improve their classroom skills in the workplace.
• Correct and guide the intern in every aspect of employment to aid in their success when they
officially enter the workforce.
Thank you in advance for your significant contribution to the education of Hawaii’s workforce
and partnering with the University of Hawaii.
Sincerely,
Michael Moser
