The Present Indicative

The present indicative is used to: tell about what is happening now o J'tudie les maths. make generalizations or speak about habitual actions o Il y a beaucoup de livres la bibliothque. indicate what is going to happen in the near future o J'obtiens mon diplme la fin de l'anne. indicate what is going to happen in the near future using aller + infinitive o Elle va aller au supermarch. indicate what has just happened using venir de + infinitive o Nous venons de voir notre ami. indicate that an action which started in the past is continuing into the present, when used with the preposition depuis o Depuis neuf ans, je rve de parler franais sans accent.

Formation: - Verbs that end in -er


- To conjugate these verbs, drop the -er and add: Je -e Nous -ons Tu -es Vous -ez Il/elle/on -e Ils/elles -ent ex: Il chante comme un oiseau. verbs whose stem ends in -g add and e before the ons ending in the nous form ex: Nous mangeons un gteau. verbs whose stem ends in -c change the -c to in the nous form ex: Nous commenons notre devoir. some verbs' forms je, tu il and ils are different than those of nous and vous. jetter, appeler (double the l or the t in all but the nous and vous forms): o j'appelle vs nous appelons acheter, modeler (change the e to in all but

the nous and vous forms): o j'achte vs. nous achetons prfrer and scher (change the to in all but the nous and vous forms): o je prfre vs. vous prfrez

- Verbs that end in -ir


Je -is Tu -is Il/elle/on it To conjugate these verbs, drop the -ir and add: Nous -issons Vous -issez Ils/elles -issent ex: Ils russissent dormir, partir, sentir, sortir -- For singular forms, drop the last 3 letters of the infinitive and add the regular ending (is, -is, -is). For the plural forms, drop -ir from the infinitive and add -ons, -ez, -ent Je pars Nous partons Tu pars Vous partez Il part Ils partent - couvrir, offrir, ouvrir, souffrir -- These verbs are conjugated like er verbs. J offer Nous offrons Tu offers Vous offrez Il offer Ils offrent

- Verbs that end in -re


To conjugate these verbs, drop the -re and add: Je -s Nous -ons Tu -s Vous -ez Il/elle/on -- Ils/elles -ent ex: Nous rendons

- Pronominal/Reflexive Verbs
- These verbs are conjugated like non-reflexive verbs but are

accompanied by reflexive pronouns (me, te, se, nous, vous, se), which refer back to the subject. Je m'inscris dans ce cours. - Pronominal verbs that express the idea that the subject and the object are doing something to each other are called reciprocal verbs. Les tudiants se parlent. - Pronominal verbs that express the idea that the subject is doing something to himself or herself are called reflexive verbs. Je me penche sur mon pupitre.
