FINAL REPORT FORMAT Note: For consistency, clarity and understandability, all of the report must be done in SI units

except where British/American Units are more appropriate such as for Heat Exchangers. The format of the final report shall be as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Title Page Table of Contents, List of Figures and List of Tables Executive Summary Two page maximum condensation of the report Introduction and Literature Review Mass and Energy Balances including HYSYS Simulation Detailed Equipment Design Economic Design Conclusions and Recommendations References Cited

Appendices I. Problem Statement II. Further Problem Handouts III. Details on Mass & Energy Balance Calculations IV. Detailed HYSYS stream data. V. Details on Equipment Design VI. Details on Economic Design THE REPORT AND APPENDICES SHOULD BE PAGE NUMBERED. Details of each Section 1. Title Page This should include University Name Department Name Course Number and Title Design Title Term and Year Instructors Name Students Names with ID numbers. 2. Table of Contents, List of Figures and List of Tables This should be page numbered. Table of Contents should be itemized. All Figures and Tables should have Titles and be correctly page numbered. 3. Executive Summary Two page maximum condensation of the report

The executive Summary should be a two page summary of the report and should contain the Final Flowsheet. The two page summary should consist of about 5 or 6 paragraphs concerning i. Introductory statement ii. Flowsheet considerations iii. Summary of Mass, Energy and HYSYS results. iv. Summary of Equipment Design Results Including Environmental [if needed]. v. Summary of Economics Results vi. Summary of Conclusions and Recommendations. 4. Introduction and Literature Review The introduction and literature review should include i. Introductory paragraph on various manufacturing processes ii. General Properties with usages iii. Include discussion of all process flowsheets. iv. Reactions, Equilibria, Kinetics, Heats of Formation and Heats of the Reactions v. Physical Property of all chemicals. This shall include Molecular Weights, Cp(g), Cp(l), Ps(T), Hv(T), and VLE properties. Equations and coefficients with particular attention to units shall be included. Other properties which may be needed in the calculations such as density etc. should be included vi. Any Particular Design aspects should be noted. vii. Chemical Costs include reference and year. viii. Safety, Hazard Operations and Environmental aspects. ix. References x. TIMING. Writeup should be completed by 26th September 2006. 5. Mass and Energy Balances including HYSYS Simulation These are three separate segments. For Mass Balance i. Introductory statement ii. Flowsheet Numbering. Renew FLOWSHEET presentation iii. Overall Basis of Calculation. iv. Basis of Recycle Calculations v. For each Unit give a separate basis of calculation.. vi. Summarize all flows in a Stream Table like a Process Flow Diagram (PFD) vii. TIMING. Writeup should be completed by 3rd October 2006. For Energy Balance viii. Introductory statement ix. Refer to Flowsheet Numbering used for Mass Balance x. Reference Basis. Specify General equations used for specific enthalpy. Note Q is a path property and is a state property. Do not use Q where it is inappropriate except when applying the 1st Law involving heat transfer.. xi. For each Unit give a separate basis of calculation. Refer to basis of Mass balance for each unit; add any additional basis information needed. xii. Pressure is important in Enthalpy Balances when there is a phase change. xiii. Revise Stream Table by including Energy Flows like a Process Flow Diagram (PFD)

xiv. TIMING. Writeup should be completed by 31st October 2006.. For HYSYS xv. Introductory statement xvi. First solve using a simplified HYSYS flowsheet using a conversion reactors and shortcut method. Present new Flowsheet on a white BACKGROUND [large enough so that graders can correct it] with the Numbering scheme used for Mass Balance. Use the same numbers as used in the Mass Balance flowsheet where possible. Use extra numbers where appropriate. xvii.Re-solve using the complex modules involving the correct reactor and rigorous distillation models. Again, present a new Flowsheet on a white BACKGROUND [large enough so that graders can correct it] with the Numbering scheme used for Mass Balance. Use the same numbers as used in the Mass Balance flowsheet where possible. Use extra numbers where appropriate. Supply copy of PRINTOUT of all streams in an Appendix. xviii.Basis of Calculation. Specify thermodynamic basis used. Give reason for use of this choice. xix. For each Unit give a separate basis of calculation or specify which parameters have been used to converge the equipment. This will probably be different from your mass balance basis. xx. Present final Mass Balance Table in form of a PFD diagram. xxi. TIMING. Writeup should be completed by 14th November 2006. Comparison: Compare your hand calculated mass and energy balances with the HYSYS results. If different, discuss why. 6. Detailed Equipment Design i. ii. Introductory statement Statement of the Problem. Locate equipments on Flowsheet and describe what you plan to do. iii. Basis of Equipment Design. Give PRINTOUT of relevant HYSYS streams here with their properties. For other data refer to specific pages in Appendix. iv. Specific Design Calculation for one case v. Note for a Heat Exchanger, the goal is to minimize the area by maximizing U, the Overall Heat Transfer Coefficient. Also, supply specification sheets here. For Reactors, for the isothermal case describe how system is maintained at the isothermal temperature. vi. Summarize all results in a Table vii. State Conclusions and Recommendations. viii. Be sure you cite appropriate references. ix. TIMING. Writeup should be completed 5th December 2006. 7. Economic Analysis i. ii. Introductory statement Statement of the Problem. Locate all equipments costs on appropriate Flowsheets. Clearly state assumptions used.

iii. Supply costs of Individual Equipments in a Table. Be specific such as equipment number, unit type, number of plates in a distillation column etc., parameters used and unit cost. iv. Labor costs, utility costs etc. v. Summarize all results in a Table vi. Supply graph of 10 year Discounted Cash Flow vii. State Conclusions and Recommendations. Be sure to state whether profitable or unprofitable. Justify by market demand! viii. ix. TIMING. Write-up should be completed by 19th December 2006. 8. Conclusions and Recommendations i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. Introductory statement Summarize the strengths of the design. Point out deficiencies in your design and how you would improve them. Any environmental problems? Conclude with profitability statement. TIMING. Write-up of the ENTIRE FINAL REPORT should be completed by 10th January 2007. Reports will be graded by all Instructors. vii. Presentations on 14th, 16th and 17th January 2007. 9. References Cited i. ii. Collect and number as every section is completed. Use standard FORMAT for citing references such as all authors surnames, initials, title of article, journal, volume number, month in brackets if needed, page numbers both first and last pages, and year of publication.
