A Call forVolunteers

To HelpWith Our PR Goals

O ne of the most important posts in any organization, churches included, is getting their names out there in the public eye.

We need volunteers willing and able to help get the name of Unity by the Shore out to the public. We have volunteers work- ing on the Website, Facebook, and Youtube. The Internet is cov- ered. We need people to get our name in the news and on TV and radio, to help us become well known in our immediate commu- nity. It really does not take much time. There will be few in-per- son meetings since most of our communication will be by con- ference calls. If you have some free time and can help, please see Flo Higgins, Chair of the Public Relations team, at church or email her at floh1@comcast.net.

We need volunteers willing and able to help with Fundraising. This committee is currently led by Rachael Fredericks with Co- Chair Kenneth Fredericks. Commitment will be to meet once over the next month to discuss upcoming events and brainstorm on new ideas. This group will also be primary when events are scheduled as "help- ing hands." We do not need a large group; if you have some free time and can help, please see Rachael Fredericks at church or email her at rachaelafredericks@gmail.com You will love volunteering with our team, and it will help our church grow in the community.

Rev. Jo a n n e M. Mu rp h y

Dear Friends,

I t’s Spring! All the beautiful flowers are here! They lift our spirits! But more than that, they

remind us of the Twelve Powers that we here at Unity by the Shore are focused on this year of

2012 … with our emphasis on the Unity World-Wide Ministries 2012 theme “Discover the

Power Within You.” Yes, it is obvious in the Springtime that the “One Power” that is within us is

the same Power that is within all Life!

Force” that is within you and me. It moves from the darkness into the Light. All of nature takes

You see it in the trees, pushing the leaves out—that “Life

on this Life—the bulb grows and breaks up and expands. That same Power is urging us to grow and to “show up” as the unique “flower” that we are. Consider the following few Powers and their oneness with Nature— All That Is!

“Power of Faith:” —Just as the bulb has “faith” that Spring will return, we, too, have the “knowing” that whatever seems to be “dark” in our lives will pass and the “Light” will shine again in all its splendor.

“Power of Love:” —Like the Daffodil who “loves” to be the Daffodil, we, too, can love ourselves and others unconditionally.

“Power of Release:” —A Daffodil cannot be a Daffodil forever—it has to release so food can go into the root. You and I can free ourselves, let go of anything that is holding us down and keeping us from the freedom to be the God creation we are designed to be.

These are just a few of the Twelve Powers that we have already shared on Sundays.

They have been Faith, Strength,

Wisdom, Release, Understanding, Will, Life and Love. My message today is limited by space but can you “see” how

the 12 Powers are within each one of us, how we are “blooming”—and growing individually and as a Spiritual Community?

Let us, together, let our Light shine and release the “Imprisoned Splendor!”

May you have a glorious “Spring” experience!

Rev. Joanne

"Meditation is to be aware of what is going on: in your body, in your feelings, in your mind, and in the world." - Thich Nhat Hanh. There are various forms of meditation in this tradition, such as sit- ting, walking, eating and mindful reading and discussing. As a prac- tice of awareness in sitting meditation, one stops, is still, calming the mind and body. From a quiet, still place one can gain insight into a deeper understanding of patterns of thinking and feeling which affect our life. With some practice, this can lead to a growing capac- ity to be present to oneself and to the world. We are fortunate to meet with a community of friends who support each other toward a greater sense of peace and well-being. We welcome anyone who is interested in joining us. News from Children’s Church

W e had a Happy Easter with the children's parade into the Sanctuary with their Easter hats on. Our Easter egg hunt was fun, and the children collected eggs

with a treat and an affirmation inside each one. Thanks to Helen Conover and Mike Kurth for helping the Easter Bunny hide all those eggs.

We are so thrilled to say that our Uniteens group started in March and is doing great! Thank you James Wilson, Charles Boyer and Mary Phillips, who are our Uniteens teachers.

Our Unikids group is making magic with Lindy Stork and myself using the Harry Potter curriculum.

Our thanks to Patrice DeVincentis who is always an Angel with our Unitots.

The children's program would like to thank Geoff Hipschman, our Children’s Music Director, for all that he has done for us. He will be leaving and starting a new adventure, and we wish him all the happiness he deserves. Thanks for everything Geoff! We will miss you.

We will be continuing our children's choir every Sunday at 10:00 to 10:45 before Sunday School. Our next performance will be April 29th during service. Thanks to Laura Dubois, Geoff Hipschman and Lyell Gressitt. It is so wonderful to have a children's choir and hear them sing! Thanks to the parents for bringing them!

In July and August we are happy to announce that we will be having our Children's Choir Summer Program from 10:30 to 11:30, during service. It will be great!

With much Light and Love, Sally Kurth :)

Aren't they blessed to be brought up with Unity? They are our

Our Building and Grounds team braved a cold rainy Saturday

We couldn't do all of these wonderful things without our
Sacred Servants. They make our community thrive, and they
really walk the talk. They embody our core values—all of them,
not just Service. They are open to Spirit and step up to do what
Spirit calls them to do.
Won't you join them as we move into the second half of 2012?
We have our Butterfly Release in August, and another dinner to

Joe Ercolino to Host Movie for Gay Pride Month

“ForTheBibleTellsMeSo”

Sunday,June17, 2012,at12:30p.m.

FILMSYNOPSIS

T he place of gay and lesbian congregation and clergy within various Christian denominations has become an increasingly controversial issue in recent decades, and many conservative Christian leaders

have justified church policies which limit the participation of homosexuals in the church (as well as support of legislation against gay marriage or civil

rights for gays) by citing certain passages of the Holy Bible. But what do these passages really mean? How accurate is their translation from the original holy texts? And have they been used outside of proper context to justify a political agenda that runs counter to Christian ideals of accep- tance and forgiveness? FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO is a documen- tary which looks at the ongoing battle of gays and lesbians to celebrate their faith without denying their sexual preference.

Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, veryAmerican families—including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson—we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard's Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech, FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity.

Army andAir Force Vet Finds Unity’s Freedom His Real Need

By Flo Higgins

C harles Boyer loves Unity because it offers freedom of thought, and he also loves the fact there is no religious dogma. During a recent interview Charles, who is a vet-

eran of the Army and Air Force, said Unity has filled a deep per- sonal need its philosophy. Unity became a real part of his life he joined the church in 2001. “Unity is the first church I ever joined, and my father was a Methodist minister,” Charles said with a smile. Charles has a wonderful sense of humor and is loyal to his religion. Charles found Unity by the Shore and loved the philosophy, and the Truth as taught by Rev. B.J. Stannard and Rev. Joanne Murphy. Charles has served on the Board of Trustees and teaches a class based on the teachings of Joel Goldsmith each Thursday night at the church. He is quick to say Joel Goldsmith and Charles Fillmore, the co-founder of Unity, are teachers he really admires. Charles has recently taken on teaching Sunday School on the third Sunday of each month. “My granddaughter loves coming to what she calls ‘gramps’s Sunday School,” he says with a laugh. Charles is fast to point out that it was his wife, the late Barbara Boyer, who first introduced him to Unity. Soon he met Herb Pierson who was the leader of the church in 2001 when the church was between ministers. “We became good friends. He was my first Unity teacher. It was Herb who urged me to join the church. They needed a Treasurer, and I was it. That was in 2001 and I have been involved here since.” Charles served on the Board and as Church Treasurer from 2001 to 2007. Charles has lived in Jackson since 1971. He has been mar- ried three times, all his wives are deceased. He has two chil- dren, five step-children, five grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. He served in the Army and was in Berlin when the Berlin Wall went up. After he left the Army he joined the Air Force. He was a Technical Sergeant in both branches of the service. He has a degree in finance from Seton Hall University and a degree in languages from the University of Maryland. He is flu- ent in German which served him well during his stay in Berlin. He developed a warm relationship with the late Ed Wolverton, who was a long-time member of Unity by the Shore and who had also served in Berlin during the war. “We had great conversations about our time in Germany. He was a great Unity friend,” Charles noted.

Charles now has a financial planning business, which includes buying and selling real estate and preparation of taxes with offices in Asbury Park, Plainfield and Jackson.

Remembering andThanking WebsiteVolunteers - Past and Future

C ongratulations to our new Website Masters Lisa and

Orsini Sanchez. We now have a brand new updated web-

site, and that is wonderful. I would like to acknowledge

the volunteers who worked in the past to shape our very first website and maintain it.

Our introduction into the fascinating world of the internet was in 2002. Barbara Brengel, the wife of the then Board President Bill Brengel, was the inspiration and the first webmas- ter. Back then we won prizes for our website from the Unity Association.

Then Barbara and Bill left Unity by the Shore and moved to Florida, and Barbara remained webmaster for a time while in Florida. Then I took over the webmaster job.

About five years ago the website was redesigned by church members Lilian Marshall and Robert Sumski,

I want to thank the many people who helped me keep the website in tip-top order until April 8, 2012, when it was turned over to the new website team.

I am grateful for the support I received from the past Board President, James McKenzie, the help of Barbara Ely, Rev. Joanne Murphy, Denise Gregory, Debbie O’Brien and the many church members who sent information, along with my son Tom, who is a genius on the computer.

It has been a stimulating experience for me and forced me out of my comfort zone into a totally new computer world. And I want to thank Lilian Marshall for her inspiration and push to get me there.

God bless Lisa and Orsini Sanchez, our new Website Masters, as they take on the responsibilities of the new site.

Flo Higgins, former Webmaster 2004-2012.

New Look for our Newsletter

This is the first newsletter with our new name and new logo printed on page one. A new sign, with this same name and logo, will replace the one in front of the church and will be installed soon.
