Long walk was
worth the efort
NestoN & District Christian Aid
committee were delighted with the
turnout for their annual sponsored walk
from Neston Parish Church along the
Wirral Way to Gayton and back.
Local Christian Aid workers are now
looking forward to Christian Aid Week,
from 13th-20th May. As well as the usual
House-to-House collection there will be
a bag packing session with request
for donations at sainsburys on Friday
morning, 18th May. on saturday, 19th
May, Gordale Garden Centre have
agreed to a bucket collection.

neighbours, deliver or collect envelopes,
pack bags for an hour or collect with a

Crimes reported to police in Neston recently include
School Lane, Parkgate A thief took the keys left in front door of an unoccupied
property being renovated and stole a white Ford transit panel van.
Ringway, Neston A back kitchen window was forced and DJ equipment, a sky
box and fshing rods were taken.
Breezehill Road A Ford transit van which had been left with the engine running
was stolen and later found two miles away abandoned after having 1500 worth of
tools removed.
High Street, Neston A bag containing a wallet, three sets of vehicle keys and
house keys were stolen from an unlocked van.
The Parade, Parkgate A handbag was taken from inside a car.
Deeside Bakery, Clayhill Industrial Estate, Neston thieves broke in, took the
keys to fve vehicles and used them to steal a BMW, Ford Focus, Lexus and a
Mercedes.
West Vale, Neston solar lights were stolen from the front garden.
Breezehill Park, Neston - Damage was caused to a fence and concrete posts
following a neighbour dispute over a boundary fence.
Phillip Bates & Co, Chester Road Vandals forced the company sign off the side
of the building.
Memorial Lane, Parkgate Damage was caused to the bonnet and passenger
side panels of a BMW.
Mayfeld Gardens A large screw was put into sidewall of the tyre of a red Vauxhall
Astra
New Street, Little Neston the fuel line was cut on a car.
School torch run
Children will be getting into the olympic spirit with a Neston schools torch Run on
Wednesday 23rd May. the run will start at 9am with 50 NHs students visiting schools
in the area. Paralympian tim Prendergast will give talks at schools and start the run off.
Ladies Day date
Neston Ladies Day takes place on thursday 7th June. the day coincides with half
term so the entire town centre (High Street, and tops of Parkgateand Brook street) will
be closed from 2 6pm, but traffc will be able to get into Sainsburys from the
bottom of Brook Street. Organisers are hoping to create a carnival atmosphere with
street entertainers, hog roast, face painting, bouncy castle and outdoor seating.
Road resurfaced
A 150,000 scheme to resurface a one-mile section of Nestons Chester High Road
has taken place. the road was closed for periods of time during April.
Neston Councillor Andrew Williams said: this work is to be welcomed because of the
poor state of the road in the area to be resurfaced.

for theatre awards
tHeyRe at it again! Following on from last years fve nominations at the 2010 NODA
North West Amateur theatre Awards, the Neston Players were recently delighted to
fnd out that they have received two nominations for 2011 awards event! Covering an
area stretching from Cheshire to Cumbria, the awards are held annually to celebrate
and recognise amateur dramatic productions right across the North West.
the Neston hopefuls this year include:
Best Actor (Drama): Michael Kennedy for Richard in Prescription for Murder
Best Supporting Actress (Drama): Caroline Davies for Mary in Prescription for
Murder
The Players hope to build on last years success when Gordon Wallis won the Best
supporting Actor award for his performance of Warnie in shadowlands and they are
keeping their fngers crossed for this years awards night. Chairman, Paul Kirkbright
commented:
Neston Players are delighted to be nominated once again for these prestigious
regional awards. Another two nominations this year really refects the hard work and
effort the membership puts into each and every production. With exciting productions
planned for the forthcoming year as part of our Diamond Anniversary season, we
are looking forward to building on these achievements, starting in May with our next
production Gail youngs hilarious comedy Cheshire Cats.
Cheshire Cats will be performed at Neston Civic Hall in May. Performances run from
Wednesday 23rd to Saturday 26th May, at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm).

However, as in previous competitions,
if we do not have enough entries in a
category, all contestants will be judged
together.
We know that most people enter the
competition for the fun of it, and for the
opportunity to perform, but you will be
pleased to know that there will also be
prizes! the details of the prizes are to be
confrmed (awaiting a decision after we
see how many entries we
have in each category

New route to
Ness Gardens
PeoPLe have a safer route to Ness
Gardens following the opening of a
new pathway to the popular attraction.
A successful collaboration between
Neston town Council, Ness Gardens
and Cheshire West and Chester
Council Highways service has resulted
in the new pathway being created on
Ness Gardens land.
Little Neston and Burton Councillor
and Ness Town Councillor, Kay Loch,
said: We are very grateful to Ness
Gardens for allowing a permissive
footpath to be created on their land to
allow a safe walking route.
the approach to Ness Gardens,
much used by walking groups and
local residents followed a blind bend in
the road where there was no room for
a footpath.
Said Kevin Reid, Director Ness
Botanical Gardens: We are delighted
with the new footpath as part of our
ongoing commitment to sustainable
tourism. Around 97 percent of our visitors
come to Ness by car and we want to
provide alternatives to car use.
We are grateful to the Friends of Ness
Gardens for supporting this project on
this their 50th anniversary year. the
footpath is proving very popular already
not only to Ness Gardens but also for
dog walkers and ramblers as a through
route to Burton village and the new RSPB
facility beyond. Access to the gardens
remains permissible to registered guide
and assistance dogs only
the pathway has been funded by
Cheshire West and Chester Council
Highways service, Neston town
Council, Friends of Ness Gardens and
a contribution from Councillor Lochs
Members budget.
Members Budget Grants are allocated to
each Councillor at the beginning of each
fnancial year and must be used within a
ward for community beneft.
Any community group, organisation
or individual can apply to their local
Councillor for aid with funding for a
project. Grants must be in excess of
250.
Ness Gardens was founded in 1897,
the gardens were passed to Liverpool
University in 1948 with the stipulation that
they be kept as a botanic gardens. Ness
Gardens attract 100,000 visitors a year,
they are open daily from 10am.

extremely well-received production of Whose
Life Is It Anyway, commented, Cheshire Cats
is an affectionate, comic tribute to all those
who participate in, organise and get involved
in any way to charity walking events world-
wide it is especially relevant this year with
2012 being the 15th anniversary of the frst
Moonwalk.

one of the leading causes of death
today, cancer touches the lives of
nearly everyone indeed several
members of the cast and crew have
had personal experiences which
they have shared with others dur-
ing the course of the rehearsal

every ticket sold to two leading
charitable organisations in the fght
against cancer nationally, Cancer
Research UK, and, locally, our own
Clatterbridge Hospital, Oncology
Department.

Two thirds of men want to slim down and

Store raised over 1,500 for Sport Relief
SAiNSBURyS shoppers in Neston were treated to some fantastic entertainment
and fund raising efforts to help raise money for sport Relief.
staff achieved cycling the 156 mile olympic Road Race challenge. they took it in
turns and managed to cross the fnish line in 12 hours. This was also teamed up
with a visit from local school choirs Woodfall Lane and st Winefrides who belted
out some great tunes including take that tracks.
A family fun day was held on the Market square, offering a whole host of
entertainment, including cake sale, tombola, raffe, face painting, Zumba class and
even a car wash!
store manager John Ruth said: We are delighted to be hosting such a great
family fun day and it shows how dedicated we are to working within the community.
everyone has shown great spirit and it is nice to see the community come together
for this worthy cause.
In total the store raised 1501.25.
Summer theatre course
NestoNs Little Actors theatre Company is again offering a week long summer
Performing Arts Course from Monday 6th to Friday 10th August for ages 6-11.
each day will begin with a dance workshop and a singing warm up. the children
will spend the remainder of the time devising and creating a play using drama,
improvisation, singing and dance which they will perform at the end of the week. the
course will be led by professional actress Leila Chebbi who is about to take up a
position as one of the choreographers for one of the olympics ceremonies.

Neston hosts science quiz
NestoN High school hosted the annual technology tournament organised by the
Rotary Club of Neston. the event ran successfully with 16 teams from seven schools
taking part. Neston High school won in the foundation level competition, for ages 11-
14. Wirrals Upton Hall School took the intermediate and advanced level crowns.

Busy time at Neston Primary School
The children at Neston Primary School have been busy in
recent weeks with a number of exciting activities taking place.
For Sport Relief the children raised 308 by
collecting spare change from parents and
relatives. The children wore red, white and
blue clothing as they walked ran and skipped
a mile. There was a fantastic atmoshere as
parents and realtive joined in too. The pre-
race warm up was lead by the school mascot
Barney Bee, who also encouraged everyone
as they completed the mile.

ago, on 2nd April 1762,
John Wesley preached in
Neston, and then sailed
from Parkgate to Ireland.

1762 diaries of John
Wesley.
April 2, Fri. - I rode to Parkgate and found
several ships, but the wind was contrary. I
preached at fve in the small house they have
just built, and the hearers were remarkably
serious. I gave notice of preaching at fve in
the morning; but at half-hour after four one
brought us word that the wind was come fair
and Captain Jordan would sail in less than an
hour. We were soon in the ship, wherein we
found about threescore passengers. The sun
shone bright, the wind was moderate, the sea
smooth, and we wanted nothing but room to
stir ourselves - the cabin being flled with hops,
so that we could not get into it but by climbing
over them on our hands and knees. In the
afternoon we were abreast of Holyhead. But
the scene was quickly changed; the wind rose
higher and higher, and by seven oclock blew
a storm. The sea broke over us continually,
and sometimes covered the ship, which both
pitched and rolled in an uncommon manner;
so I was informed, for, being a little sick, I lay
down at six and slept, with little intermission,
till near six in the morning. We were then near
Dublin Bay, where we went into a boat, which
carried us to Dunleary.
edward explains that the small house
was a chapel, between Neston and
Parkgate. Neston Methodist Church
was opened in 1899 when the Rock
Ferry Wesleyan Circuit bought the old
Tin Chapel which was built in 1874 as
a Mission Hall. In 1908, when the new
Methodist Church in Park street was
opened, visitors to the ceremony are said
to have been to look at the old chapel,
which was being used as a barn. Wesley
was a frequent visitor to Neston, and
sailed several times from Parkgate to
Ireland. the congregation of the Parkgate
Road chapel were Wesleyan Methodists.
Primitive Methodists started to meet
in Little Neston from 1819 and met in
different places until 1859 when they
moved to the cottage of samuel Mealor
in Ness. in 1872 they built Zion Chapel,
which became Little Neston Methodist
Church.

prayers, and members of the church
read the Conversion Hymn of John and
Charles Wesley.

frst team debuts during
the season, showing the
talent in the club, whilst

performances at Cannock
marked him out as one for

Meanwhile the beavers
team, made up of under
14s, enjoyed even
better fortunes under the
management of Kenny
Gardiner, as they went
through the season with a
22 game winning run. In
the process they scored
an incredible 221 goals,
and such are Kennys

conceded 28!. Whilst
not quite reaching the
same heights, Nestons
other teams all had
satisfactory seasons, and
most will be enjoying a
well earned break before

Competition. in 2012 this is jointly with Neston Town Council. Janet Griffths recently
organised the frst of a series of Litter Pick days, to help make the area look tidy.
