Lesson Plan: Rhetorical Devices

Objectives: By the end of the day students will be able to: Begin to gain an understanding of the terms Logos, Pathos, and Ethos and how they are used Become familiar with how Logos, Pathos, and Ethos strategies are used in everyday situations Identify the rhetoric devices (Logos, Pathos, and Ethos) in their own persuasive writing.

Materials Needed: 25 index cards ( with roles that students will play) Ethos, Pathos, and Logos work sheet Markers White board

Activities: Journal Entry: Students will respond to the journal prompt: Write a half page persuading me whether or not to give your class homework tonight. ( 5 minutes) Class Sharing: 10 minutes o Have students share their journal entry with the rest of the class. Talk about why some students arguments and pleas were more convincing than others. Ethos, Pathos Logos - 15 minutes o Handout Ethos Pathos Logos handouts so students can follow along and look at examples while I explain each rhetorical device and how they can be used to persuade people. Wrap up: 10 minutes o Have students go back to their Journal entries and see if they can identify the type of arguments that they have labeled most convincing from the class. After discussing, have each student go back and identify the rhetorical strategy that was present in their journal. To be turned in at the end of class. ( go back to opening activity for clarification) Homework: Split the students up into groups and assign each of the groups a logical fallacy to present tomorrow.

Assessment: Assess students developing knowledge of the terms Logos, Pathos, and Ethos and how they are used: After explaining the worksheet in which I offer examples of each type of rhetorical argument, I will probably use my prompting questions as well and ask them for some example that they can think of as well.

Assess students familiarity with how Logos, Pathos, and Ethos strategies are used in everyday situations: I will pay attention to the way they have labled their earlier arguments in the journal entry and how they discuss which ones were effective. Assess students ability to identify the rhetoric devices (Logos, Pathos, and Ethos) in their own writing: As I collect the Journals at the end of the day, I will be able to evaluate how well the students are able to recognize the rhetoric devices and connect them to the arguments they have identified as most compelling.
