Annotated Bibliography Sydell, Laura. How To Save The World, One Video Game At A Time. npr.com. 2011. National Public Radio. February 20, 2011. This developed article from NPRs website is written to give Laura Sydells point of view when it comes to video games and their purpose. In this article Sydell gives the opinion that video games and other popular online activities can solve the worlds problems. Contrary to popular belief, Laura believes that instead of decreasing our time spent in gaming, the world should elevate its playing time to twenty-one billion hours a week. Her proposition behind this idea is supported by her experience playing these games. Laura explains how some internet games provide necessary problem solving skills as well as other skills she believes our society needs to grow intellectually. When talking about a well-developed opinion, the author fails to consider both sides of the story. Laura fails to consider the possible side effects of too much gaming and the negative attributes that come with it. Her lack of scientific proof and connection to only life experiences leaves me skeptical on her point of view. Laura tries to make a connection between the virtual gaming world and real life situations but in reality, life cannot be imitated. Overall I found this article very interesting in the sense of a different point of view but was lacking in realistic thought. I plan to use this article in my paper because it gives a different viewpoint to my research and will help me analyze my topic as a whole. Sturm, Roland. Childhood Obesity What We Can Learn From Existing Data on Societal Trends, Part 1. Preventing Chronic Disease n.d. Web. 20 February. 2012. In this academic journal written by Roland Sturm, the possible effects of obesity are examined by careful data analysis and trends. This journal starts by addressing the issue
Comment [h4]: I think Feburary should be abbreviated, but Im not certain. Comment [h2]: You might want to double check on this, but Im fairly certain that in academic writing you arent supposed to call the author by first name only. Comment [h3]: You might want to put this in quotes if thats the exact amount she used. Comment [h1]: I think this should be 20 Feb. 2011.

of obesity and the issue that the obesity trend is not changing. Sturm explains that obesity can be directly connected with time use and physical trends throughout the day. He begins by analyzing time use data and reviewing data on how children spend their time. Through his data collection he shows that children actually have a decrease in free time, due to the time spent in school and on structured activities. Because more time was spent at school, this means even more time had to be sacrificed to getting ready for these events. This conclusion was shown throughout all ages not just in young children. Based on his data analysis of free time, my belief of sedentary activities has changed. Another topic addressed in his research was media use and the factors for media use. Roland explains how television still remains the most prominent source of entertainment rather than video games and the internet. He believes that media use is directly connected to obesity because it displaces physical activity and promotes unhealthy eating habits. Overall this article is a very reliable source backed with sufficient scientific data and well thought out conclusions. The only factor that questions its validity is the age of this article. Failure to include present data leads me to question such thoughts that include time usage and media use. The author does give many good supported reasons on how we can learn from the data analysis of obesity. I believe this source will greatly benefit me due to the concrete facts it gives and by well supported opinions, and I will most likely use it in my paper. Livestrong.com. developed ideas from other articles. From this article I learned the warning signs of a gaming addiction and that some places have even tried to give help to those with an addiction. I believe that this will be a valid resource when writing my paper as it will help me develop some ideas on why so much time is being spent behind a computer screen.
Comment [h9]: On all the other sources you did a great job explaining why you thought the sources were credible, but this one might need a bit more explanation. Youve done excellent with explaining the elements required in the annotation! Just fix the minor formatting errors with the date and you should be good.
