Why did the Russians paint almost everything in blue? In the old days, the phrase the sweet life in Hanko was used to describe the blissful idleness, luxury, and the long and merry parties in the town. Hanko is still the ideal holiday destination for people who love life! Finlands southernmost city is less than 2 hours from Helsinki.

The Spa Park The beautiful old wooden villas in the Spa Park were built at the end of 1800s. The villas, designed by wellknown architects, represent a decorative wooden architecture. Some of the buildings still serve as guest houses and restaurants. The spa building was damaged during the Continuation War and was pulled down. Emigration memories During the years 18801930, nearly 250,000 Finns and Russians emigrated to America, Canada or Australia via Hanko. War memories The cape of Hanko was rented to the Soviet Union as a naval base under the peace treaty of Moscow (1940), which ended the Winter War. The Soviet Union brought a garrison of 30,000 men to Hanko. There are still ruins of fortifications in the centre of the town. Nature Nature in Hanko is incredibly varied due to the temperate climate and the geographic location. The landscape is characterized by magnificent cliffs and unspoilt stretches of fine white sand, sheltered bays, and beautiful meadows.

EXPERIENCE

Bengtskr The tallest lighthouse in the Nordic countries. Daily cruises available in summer. Departure from Hanko Eastern Harbour, the largest guest marina in Finland and the heart and soul of sweet summer life! The Path of Love Nature path at the city centre, with a fantastic view over the sea and the town. There is also a big devils churn on the rocks. Museums & galleries This aesthetic environment feeds creativity. Visit the galleries, museums and exhibitions or meet with the artists in their ateliers. Elk Safari The elks have their favourite hide-outs in the forests. With a map, and insider tips, you will have the opportunity to see the King of the Forest. The Water Tower The tower stands 65 m above sea level, and there is a fantastic view in all directions over the cape of Hanko and the Baltic Sea. Beach life Hanko has 130 km of coastline, of which 30 km are sandy beaches. No wonder Hanko was voted the best summer city in Finland!

Restaurants Living almost like on an island, surrounded by the sea, plays a major role on the tempting menus. Every season has its special delicacies. In hardly any other small town is there such a versatile selection of restaurants as in Hanko! Summer evenings are perfect for romantic moments sipping champagne on a seaside terrace, hand in hand. In fact, Hanko is a popular place for weddings, and many couples celebrate their wedding anniversary here year after year. This endearingly tender atmosphere is not found elsewhere Accommodation Would you like to stay in an old villa? The rooms are charming in a modest way. Many villas have operated as boarding houses over 100 years. Or rent a house, make yourself at home! We have Finlands broadest range of private accommodation to rent. Various adorable flats are situated either right in the centre or in peaceful locations further away.

The Svart Manor is one of the most remarkable manor houses in Finland, and Billns has developed into the home of versatile cultural events. The ruins of the medieval Raseborg Castle are a grand sight that distinguish the entire region. The Castle ruin is situated on a rock by the Raseborg river in the village of Snappertuna.

Whatever season you choose to visit our part of Finland, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to high-quality, locally-produced foods. This is a very clean and unspoilt region, and the excellent soil quality and (relatively!) mild climate have enabled many kinds of agriculture to flourish here. A number of organic and biodynamic farmers can be found in the region and they are worth a visit if you are interested in buying the highest quality produce at reasonable prices from the farm shop: products on offer include various meats, grains and vegetables according to season and availability. You do not need to be an Organic pilgrim on a mission, however, to enjoy great food when you visit our town: you can find wonderful local produce at some of the supermarkets and in the Wednesday and Saturday openair markets, or you can simply stroll to one of our local restaurants and see what local items are on the menu. Most of the good restaurants in town feature excellent local seasonal fare.
