Whom it may concern,

Hello. This is Jinna, Jeannie and James from Bradbury School. This year in class we are doing our exhibition, we are focused on water pollution in Hong Kong and how it affects others. We have chosen your organization to interview because your organization has had experience with lots of different problems. If you have time for a interview on skype could you tell us the best time for you? If not could you please tell us if you could answer the questions by email? Thank you, Kind Regards Jinna, Jeannie and James.

Good Morning/Afternoon, Excuse me, this is Jinna, Jeannie and James from Bradbury School. We are doing a project on water pollution. Are you available right now? Thank you. We have chosen your organization to interview since you had have experience on the topic, Could you answer a few questions? Thank you very much for your time. Do you think the Hong Kong Ocean is clean?

YES
Why? (explain with detail please)

NO
Why? (explain with detail please)

Do you think that the Hong Kong waters Do you think one plastic bag can make are one of the cleanest in the world? a huge difference? Why? So you think that the waters in Hong Kong are safe? How do you think all the rubbish in the ocean ended up there? Does the government have anything to do with the pollution in the ocean? How does water pollution affect us and other creatures?

What wil happen if nobody takes action? What action do you suggest we take?

Thank You!

ARTS PROJECT
We are making a remake of the song Rainy Days. We are making our own lyrics to the song. The lyrics are about Water Pollution. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YW2Dxs5Z0Jg

Jinna- Where are the sparkling rivers, where are the sparkling seas, Both- what happened to all the marine life. Jeannie- Just look what you have done, Jinna- animals dying... Both- marine life no more. Jeannie- Toxic swimming all inside the ocean, Jinna- Rivers, blackening. Jeannie- Fish dying, Jinna- Hunger spreading everywhere....

Both- What happened to all the sparkling rivers, what happened to sparkling seas. Jinna- What about the marine life what happened to it all.. marine life no more...

Why do we even litter? making the ocean so bitter then why are people swimming We should help the ocean starting from now now now Recycle whenever you can Stopping WP is the plan why do we do this polluting is not bliss. if you think one plastic bag doesn't matter (pause) well you're causing a huge disaster. We should start picking up trash so there ain't any black ash litter is bitter dont put rubbish down the drain cause it goes with the rain to the sea... (echo) (pause for music) stop water pollution, you can make a change.

James- Help stop water pollution, you can make a change.

But human activity, particularly over the last few decades, has finally pushed oceans to their limit

Form Question: what is plastic made from? http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_plastic_made_of

Qs and Rs Q1.What is plastic made from?
A1. Plastic is made from monomers, which come from oil. Monomers also contain amino acids. This is made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen as well as nitrogen. Some plastic is also made from crude oil and natural gas.

petrochemicals
Today most plastics are made from petrochemicals (crude oil and natural gas), although they can also be produced from corn and other biomasses. In manufacture from petrochemicals, refineries process crude oil to produce, first, fuels, such as gasoline, diesel, and a number of different lubricants. Then they spin off a wide variety of other petrochemicals. Some of these other petrochemicals are then used by chemical plants to make a wide variety of products such as fertilizers and plastic resins. Plastic resins are, in turn, used to produce many different types of plastic. The majority of what we know as plastic today is made from materials that are extracted from crude oil. Often the same type of crude oil that is used to produce the fuels for cars. There are many other types of polymer, both natural and synthetic: cellulose, starch, silicones, teflon, PVC, etc. Elementally, plastics can contain carbon (C), hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), but also nitrogen (N), chlorine (Cl), fluorine (F), silicon (Si), sulphur (S), and phosphorus (P). The term plastic merely refers to the property of being flexible but firm

Question: How are we harming the sea and how does rubbish end up there?

http://wwf.panda.org/about_our_earth/blue_planet/problems/

Oceans. For centuries people have regarded them as an inexhaustible supply of food, a useful transport route, and a convenient dumping ground - simply too vast to be affected by anything we do. But human activity, particularly over the last few decades, has finally pushed oceans to their limit put this in quotes at the top.
There are many different ways we can pollute water. Boats which we use to get shipments, leave their mark oil spills, and rubbish thrown straight into the ocean. Although this is against the law it is hard to reinforce this. Anchors falling straight into the ocean, and chemical wastes are all hurting this ecosystem.

important reserves of oil, gas, and minerals naturally lie deep beneath the seafloor. We are drilling for these goods, so we are harming sensitive marine habitats and species. http://www.whoi.edu/science/B/people/kamaral/plasticsarticle.html A sewer system may flow plastics straight into the ocean, or from flying (plastic bags etc.) and there are people who dump the rubbish straight into the water, mainly streams. However currents in the stream eventually bring plastic out into the ocean. Also the currents from other islands may bring the rubbish from the sea to our ocean.

How does plastic affect marine life?http://www.ehow.com/how-does_4565696_waterpollution-affect-fish_.html causation also a function question(above) and (below) Is the water safe for marine life?/ No, because of the bad choices the majority chooses to do, For e.g our sewage goes straight through the rain drains into the sea, so all our sewage goes right into the habitat of many many marine life. Also when one is simply too lazy she/he will randomly drop the plastics that they have, or it just randomly slips out of their hands the plastic that is dropped may fly/float (most likely plastic bags)around till it goes to a nearby water stream which carries the plastic straight into the sea or it occasionally flies all the way on windy days to the waters to torment the life in the sea. As when bits of plastic are ingested by a small fish the plastic may get trapped inside its intestines and cause suffocation ---> and die. As plastic can look like many things in the dark the fish could easily have mistaken as food, like how a plastic bag looks like a jellyfish to them, so they go and try to eat the bag. Also when plastic object get stuck around their mouth they are unable to eat and cause them to slowly choke to death

Also even if the fish dont eat the plastic it will take hundreds of years for it to biodegrade so even if they dont eat it for about 20 years its lifespan is still like several times longer it is most likely to be eaten by another marine creature, then kill that creature, unless it is a big animal like a shark or something, but still it may reduce the sharks lifespan and when it dies maybe other fish will eat the shark and carry on the toxins and it will go on and on, lasting decades. Change:

How have the oceans quality changed over the years?

http://www.epd.gov.hk/epd/english/environmentinhk/water/marine_quality/mwq_report.html The epd (environmental protection department) had made a system called ocean quality objectives (OQO) its where they put standards of what is Clean water, and after a year of monitoring the water theyll check how well they did according to the standards (percentages). 2004= 87%, 2005=85%, 2006=87%,2007=80%,2008=81%,2009=87% and 2010=80%

Connections Doug Woodring How does water pollution affect us? According to the meeting we had with Doug woodring he explained that if we eat fish caught in the waters there are chances that the fish had ingested plastics, and the plastics toxin may slowly take effect if you digest that toxin to frequently. Also if the water goes in a extremely bad condition it may bring out a smell out which may affect the air that we breathe in. Perspective How serious does the mass majority think this is?

Does the government consider this as an issue?

Yes because they have organizations that they built that keep areas of water with marine life clean. For example the epd (Environmental Protection Department), who are also trying to build sewers instead of rainwater drains for sewage because the drain leads straight to the sea. They try to prevent any purposeful polluting. Responsibility How can we help water pollution? Residents Residents should try to join their sewage system to a sewer so it goes to a factory to be treated instead of going straight into the sea. Also use less consumption of water so they can reduce the amount of sewage needed to be treated. also try to pick up rubbish floating around cause you may have just saved a group of fishes from suffocating and dying.

Us 1.We could do a sale and donate the money gained to a organization focused on helping the water. 2. Go to beaches and collect rubbish flying around. 3.build a poster at beaches which had frequent sights of rubbish in the water asking people to try to pick up rubbish even if its not theirs and not to litter. 4. Make a persuasive video and spread it all around using social media Reflection How do we get to know how polluted the water is (interview)
Burkholderia pseudomallei- Bacteria that grows in many different places. It infects people, animals and plants. It causes the disease melioidosis.
