If yours is like most households with growing children
and teens, theres probably at least one old bicycle sit-
ting unused in your basement or garage. Now is the time
to dust it off and donate it as part of the Rotary Club of
Vinelands Pedals for Progress bicycle drive scheduled
for Saturday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at 2260
East Sherman Avenue in Vineland.
Those interested in donating bikes or portable sewing
machines need not wait until May 19simply contact
Henry Hansen at 856-696-0643 to arrange a drop-off or
pick-up for your donation.
The Rotary Club of Vineland donated over 250 bikes in
2011, affecting hundreds of families in need. Also a treadle
and three portable sewing machines were collected.
Rotary has partnered with Pedals for Progress, a non-profit
corporation devoted to global economic development, to
export bikes to more than 30 third world countries. Each
bike represents food for the table and helps keep families
together. Bicycles represent mobility and children often
use the bikes to attend school on a regular basis.
The Rotary Club of Vineland meets on Tuesdays, at
12:10 p.m. For details, visit www.vinelandrotary.com.

preparing a donated bicycle for shipment overseas.

STRAIGHTENING TEETH HAS COME A LONG WAY. Braces work. Yet,
even though they come in bright colors these days, the brackets and steel wires still
work the same way. Food still gets stuck in them. Flossing and brushing are an
adventure. And, when youre a teenager sporting a mouthful of metal, easy and
condent smiles can be hard to come by.
ALL SMILES. NO SACRIFICES. Back when we were teenagers, putting up with the
hassles of braces and feeling self-conscious about wearing them were necessary in order to get
the smile you wanted. For todays teens, getting through those formative years can be a little
tougher. Thankfully, straightening their teeth with Invisalign Teen
TM
is a lot easier.
THE ADVANTAGES ARE CLEAR. Invisalign Teen is a series of virtually invisible
aligners that gradually straighten your teens teeth. And because theyre removable, proper
dental hygiene is a cinch. Since most people wont even know your teen is wearing Invisalign,
theyll have the condence to keep on smiling. Best of all, treatment costs about as much
as braces, and fewer doctor visits take up less of your time. Our aligners
even include a color-coded indicator that tells you how long your teens
been wearing them.
FIND OUT WHY MORE AND MORE MOMS ARE CHOOSING INVISALIGN TEEN.
Choosing how to straighten your teens teeth is a big decision. Visit our
website to see what other teenagers and their parents have to say about
us. Then take a few moments to take our Self Assessment together with
your teenager.
Invisalign Teen will help give your teenager the condence of a great
smileand theyll love you for it along the way.

The Cringe
Factor
It kicks in whenever our columnist reads a daily.
O
ne of the things Ive cut back on
since I started living in the land
of fixed income is the daily
newspaper. The reasons are
twofold: First, it saves me a ton of money;
and second, when I do pick one up it usu-
ally makes me cringe. Lets explore those
reasons a little more deeply.
The money thing is important, but not
critical. A ton of money for me figures
out to around $1,000 a year.
Here is how I arrived at that figure: $1
for the paper ($2 on Sunday); $1 for gas
(its a seven-mile round trip to Wawa); and
$1 for a coffee (I cant stop in Wawa and
not get a coffee).
When I was working, coffee and the
paper were an integral part of my daily
routine. Id pass right by Wawa (who does-
nt?) on the way to work and, since they
made much better coffee, it just became a
part of my life. Get to work early, read the
paper, do the crossword and enjoy my
morning cup of coffee.
After I was married and retired (not
necessarily in that order), I kept up the
daily routine. My wife is a decaf person and
I prefer regular. Shes usually up first and
would put on a small pot of decaf. No prob-
lem, since I needed to go out for the paper
anyway. That went on for a couple of years.
Then we received one of those single-
cup maker coffee machines as a Christmas
gift. It was a life changer. Hot, fresh coffee
anytime I wanted.
Id still get the paper, but it was more
for the crossword than the news. My Mom
always did the crossword, but its habit I
didnt pick up until after Id moved to
South Jersey. Once I started, I found I
couldnt stop.
My paper of choice is the Philadelphia
Inquirer (the best paper in the U.S. when I
moved here in 84). Back in the day, I read
The Press and The Journal too, but that was
mostly because they were competitors and
I wanted so see what they were up to.
These days, I still buy the Sunday
Inquirer (now available on Saturday) but
its mostly for the crosswords.
Why the Inquirer and not the others?
It just makes sense: Ones a snack, ones
a quick sandwich and the other is a full-
course meal. And they are all about the
same price. Its a no-brainer for me.
Sometimes, though, I break down and
buy a paper during the week if theres
something I want to know more about.
When that happens, I almost always
run into the cringe factor. For instance, last
Wednesday I picked up the Inquirer.
Double cringe right on the front page.
Top left-hand story was (President)
Obama celebrating the anniversary of bin
Ladens death. And I quote: On a swift,
secretive trip to the war zone, President
Obama declared Tuesday night that after
years of sacrifice, the U.S. combat role in
Afghanistan is winding down just as it has
already ended in Iraq.
Heres the cringe factor: Since when do
we celebrate the anniversary of someones
death, even someone as vile as bin Laden?
If youre going to wrap yourself in the flag,
do it to keep warm and not to get votes in
an election year.
The bottom right-hand story was
Christie campaigning for the governor of
Wisconsin. Again I quote: Gov. Christie
parachuted into the middle of the country
Tuesday to lend some of his self-styled
Jersey tough-guy firepower to a belea-
guered and controversial Republican gov-
ernor on the front lines of the war to roll
back spending on public employees.
The cringe factorsimply the misleading
reporting or rather, I should say, the writing,
since reporting was the least part of it.
Christie didnt parachute anywhere. And
hes not a self-styled Jersey tough-guy,
I dont know if Wisconsins governor is
beleaguered and controversial or sup-
ported and beloved because hes trying to
cut spending and neither does this writer.
Wisconsins voters will sort that out.
Very often in the Inquirers op/ed sto-
ries these days they will put the notice that
the Inquirer is now partly owned by South
Jersey Democratic Party boss, George
Norcross. It should have been in that story.
One last thing. The last paragraph of
the Christie story and again, I quote: Of
most interest, but least import? Christies
16-year-old daughter, Sarah, apparently has
a crush on (Wisconsin Gov. Scott) Walkers
teenage sons.
If that doesnt make you cringe,
nothing will. I

No time to

You were gone before we knew it,
And only God knows why.
Our hearts still ache with sadness
And secret tears still flow
What it meant to really love you
No one can ever know
But now we know you want us
To mourn for you no more,
To remember all the happy times
Life does have so much in store
Since you will never be forgotten
We pledge to you today
A hallowed place within our hearts
Is where you will always stay

Woodruff Family Named Bridgeton Legends 2012
The City of Bridgeton has a rich and storied past. Throughout its history there
have been many community members who have made an indelible mark that
should not soon be forgotten. To honor these exemplary community members,
local leaders have come together to create an annual event called Bridgeton
Legends in which such citizens will be given the celebration they deserve. For
their first offering, the organizing committee has chosen to pay tribute to the
Woodruff family.
The reason we selected the Woodruff Family is because they have been a
part of Bridgeton for generations and throughout they have always been involved
in the community, said Committee member Diane Kolman.
The Woodruff family has been dispensing fuel to people in Cumberland
County since 1869. In the 143 years that have followed, the family has innovated
and adapted to the changing energy business in order to continue to provide
great service to the public. Like all great business owners, the Woodruff family
understands the importance of each and every customer. Therefore, they have
always had a policy of giving back to the communities they serve. In recent gen-
erations, the family has donated both funds and manpower to many important
local charities and non-profits including the Hug-a-Bear Foundation, the Bay
Atlantic Symphony, the Ranch Hope for Boys, Cumberland County College, and
over a dozen sports teams in Salem and Cumberland Counties. Members of the
organizing committee stress that these examples are only a small part of all that
the Woodruffs have done to make a difference.
We are proud to honor such an amazing family that has meant so much to
Bridgeton, said Kolman. With the support of local businesses and community
members we hope to make the Bridgeton Legends event an annual tradition.

City Of Vineland, Jewish Federation Celebrate
Israels 64th Anniversary
The top floor of Vinelands City Hall was the location as the City of Vineland
helped the Jewish Federation of Cumberland, Gloucester & Salem Counties cele-
brate Israels 64th anniversary with a celebration and luncheon recently.
Yom Haatzmaut, or Israel Independence Day, commemorates the establish-
ment of the State of Israel on May 14, 1948. The anniversary is commemorated
on the date in the Jewish calendar, the 5th of Iyar, which corresponds to actual
date of establishment.
With department heads present, Vineland Mayor Robert Romano read a
proclamation honoring the State of Israel on the occasion of this milestone and
all present sang the Israeli national anthem, Hatikvah.
Its such an important day for all of us, said Steven Schimmel, executive
director of the Jewish Federation of Cumberland, Gloucester & Salem Counties.
The State of Israel continues to thrive, despite threats to its existence and has
made the desert bloom. Its really great that the City of Vineland can share in
this celebration with us.
Schimmel noted the poignant fact that the celebrations of Yom Haatzmaut
come the day after Yom Hazikaron, the Israeli Fallen Soldiers and Victims of
Terrorism Memorial Day. It would be, he said, as if the solemnity of our
Memorial Day came the day before the festivities of the Fourth of July.
It was also noted that, shortly after the State of Israels establishment,
Holocaust survivors who had just come to Israel to start a new life, had to take
up arms after the first Arab invasion of the country.
Rabbi Alfredo Winter, of Beth Israel Congregation, in Vineland, cited the bond
between the Jewish community in this country and that of Israel in commemo-
rating this anniversary.
Its a celebration that reflects not only the pride of the American Jewish com-
munity in the achievements of the State of Israel, but also reaffirms the strong
ties between our countries, Rabbi Winter said. Such an official celebration is
acknowledgement of this by all concerned."
From left: Kerem Torah Community Hebrew School Principal, Verne Joyce; City of
Vineland Mayor, Robert Romano; Jewish Federation of Cumberland, Gloucester & Salem
Counties Executive Director Steven Schimmel; Rabbi Yisroel Rapoport of Sons of Jacob
Congregation, Vineland; and Rabbi Alfredo Winter of Beth Israel Congregation, Vineland.

1990, The Manhattan Transfer has per-
formed on many sold-out world concert
tours. The group made history in 1981 as
the first to win Grammy Awards for both
the pop and jazz categories in the same
year.
Despite dramatic musical changes
since the 1970s, The Manhattan Transfers
popularity has spanned the decades. Each
singerHauser, Paul, Janis Siegel and
Cheryl Bentyne, who joined in group in
1979has impressive musical back-
grounds. The Manhattan Transfer band
includes Music Director Yaron
Gershovsky, piano/keyboards; Steve Hass,
drums; Gary Wicks, bass and Adam
Hawley on guitar.
Beverly DiMatteo, co-chairperson, 2nd
Anniversary Committee, director and
treasurer of the Landis Theater
Foundation, anticipates a large turnout.
She says, The Anniversary Committee
has worked hard to reach our sponsorship
and ad goals. We can now concentrate on
ticket sales. Every seat is great, and a good
selection remains. WVLT will broadcast
live to enhance the evenings excitement.
The stations internet site, www.sound-
sofphillyradio.com, will carry the broad-
cast. At the post-show party, one lucky

person will win a free Caribbean cruise
vacation for two.
The Landis, originally built as a movie
theater in 1937, closed in 1987. As part of
the Vineland Redevelopment Plan, the
theater underwent extensive renovations
and celebrated its May 2010 reopening
with a special concert by Broadway super-
star Bernadette Peters.
Boscovs is a Platinum Sponsor for this
Anniversary event, and all proceeds bene-
fit the Landis Theater Foundations goal
of preserving the Landis while ensuring
its continuation as a community cultural
and architectural resource.
The concert is a double celebration. On
September 1, 2012, the Appel Farm Arts &
Music Center in Elmer will end its indoor
concert and family program at the Clare
Rostan Appel Theatre to assume the
Landis programming, marketing and
management. Key employees will relocate
to the Landis offices by July.
This one-year agreement, which will
be renewed annually, is a win-win for
everyone. The new Appel Farm at the
Landis program allows Appel Farm to
expand its presenting series as the Landis
strengthens its management and opera-
tions.
Producing Partner and Vineland native
Robert Dragotta anticipates a favorable
relationship. He says, I believe Appel
Farms marketing expertise, ability to
attract grant money and enthusiasm for
this partnership will benefit everyone.
Cumberland Countys performing arts
future is very bright, and I hope to be a
part of this beacon far into the future. We
have a great potential to become the center
of South Jerseys regional arts community.
In 1960, Albert and Clare Appel found-
ed Appel Farm as a private summer arts
camp. After incorporating as a non-profit
organization in 1978, it became a venue
for presentations, arts education, meet-
ings and conferences. I

I want to tell you how much me and my
brother appreciate our mom. She does my
hair for school, she picks out my clothes.
When I need her to pick me up something,
she does. That is why I appreciate my
mom. Im 10 years old.
My brother appreciates our mom
because she helps him with his ABCs, kiss-
es his boo boos when he is hurt, and plays
Wii with him. That is why my brother
appreciates our mom. My brother is 2 years
old.

SACRIFICES MADE
It is Mothers Day once again! I want to
pay tribute to my mother. She is the second
child of nine children that are alive; they
were supposed to be 11. Grew up in a
household where there was no structure at
all. My grandfather was a police officer and
a loyal supporter of a politician. He had no
plans for his children. He was so busy with
his own agenda as far as being a servant
to the community, but an absentee father
when it came to his own children. He
would refuse to pay their school tuition.

Mom used to tell us that the only way to
escape from that situation was to find a
man who would marry her and move in
with him. When she attended high school
in 1969, she met the love of her life and
eventually married him. My Dad is the first
and only love of her life.
In March of 1971, as she delivered her
valedictory address as a sophomore in high
school, I was in her womb; hearing her
stimulating speech. My mom did not finish
high school due to her situation. Later on,
she passed a placement test and technically
skipped the two years left and garnered her
high school diploma.
My parents were very young to start a
family at that time. However, nothing
stopped them from pursuing their dreams.
Dad continued his studies and became a
police officer, but Mom stayed at home for

us. My recollection is that she always had a
Sari-Sari store (convenience store). In
the Philippines, it is not a big deal to start a
little business at your house. The little
store became our source of income as well.
With her natural interest in business, she
was able to develop the buy and sell con-
cept to the fullest. Since the family was
growing, they had to find ways to sustain
the four of us.
Although she was a perfect partner to
my Dad, she had to deal with so many mar-
ital issues. One of them was my fathers
drinking problem. Though she was very
young, leaving him was never an option.
She used to tell me that marriage, more
than being in love to your husband, is a
commitment to him and to the children.
Mom was so selfless. Life would have been
a lot different if she had given up.

Mom used to help us draft our speeches,
do our homework, never missed any
Parent-Teacher Association meetings, and
was always the president of the organiza-
tion. She was the most popular mom in
school and was successful with her
fundraising ideas.
In college, she stayed in my dormitory
for the first week. They picked the most
prestigious university for mean
American based school, known for the
high tuition cost and high standard of edu-
cation. That did not threaten my parents to
gamble for my future. I was able to get a
scholarship since the university acknowl-
edges students with excellent grades. Mom
left me a long letter the day she left my
dormitory that became my fortitude in fac-
ing everyday trials.
In the Philippines, if you do not have a
lot of land or properties that you can pass
along to your children, education is the
only assurance that your children would
have a decent future. My parents goal was
for us to finish a four-year degree and we
all did. They poured all their resources into
our education. In retrospect, a police offi-
cers wages is not enough to support the
four of us. However, with Moms ingenuity,
they were triumphant with their advocacy.
It is innate in my mother to be in busi-
ness and a public servant. When we all set-
tled down and had our own families, she
became so successful with her coal mining
and trucking business. Just a couple of
years ago, she entered politics. Because she

was a born-leader, she had an overwhelm-
ing nominationand eventually votes from
the community. My mother deserves [to
have her story] told because I know how
hard it is to just be a motherrunning a
household etc., now that I am one myself.
But to be who she is today, and how she
was before is an accomplishment beyond
anyones imagination. She stayed as our
prayer warrior and a confidant. I miss her
so much every day, since I live a thousand
miles away from her. If only I could give
her the world, I would! I appreciate all her
efforts so much; literally, she let herself die
so we would live. Thank you Mom!
Happy Mothers Day, Mommy, and I
love you so much!
Girlie E. Vasquez, Vineland
A SIGN FROM GOD
I would like to begin by telling you
about my mothers screen name, which
will become the centerpiece of my story.
As my parents got older, they decided to
spend their winters in Florida to get away
from the cold temperatures of the north-
eastern part of the U.S. Of course, our
close-knit Italian family was considering
just how we were going to keep in touch
with our snowbirds. My sister reminded
me that in Moms younger years she had
been a secretary. We convinced Mom that
knowing how to type was really a key
component to being able to use a comput-
er successfully. She agreed and the plan
was to teach her how to e-mail.
After much discussion my niece and
nephew came up with a screen name that
was appropriate. My mothers name was
Mary and my fathers name was Tony. We
took the first two letters of my fathers
name TO and the first three letters from
my mothers name MAR. Her new screen
name became TOMAR.
My mother was a little apprehensive
about using the computer, but in no time
she got the hang of it and we were all
communicating regularly. Mother became
very adept at using the computer, and it
became a great source of entertainment
for her, in addition to communicating with
the family.
The winter of 2008-2009, Mom was
not feeling good. We tried to convince her
not to take her annual New Years flight to
Florida, but she insisted saying, I know
Ill feel better down there.
Well, God had a different plan for her.
The flight exacerbated her condition. The
day after she arrived, she was admitted to
the hospital with congestive heart failure.
Mother passed away three months later
from complications after open heart sur-
gery. Mom lived a long and wonderful
life, but who is ever ready to part with a
loved one?
I decided to pray for a sign that she
was alright, and got my answer very short-
ly thereafter. I was driving to work on a
road that I travel daily. Suddenly in the
oncoming lane was a white box truck bar-
reling down the street at a high rate of
speed. Above the drivers cab, there was a
name, which made me do a double-take.
Emblazoned across the top of the truck in
very large black capital letters was the
word TOMAR. There was absolutely no
mistaking what I saw. At first I gasped,
then I began looking in my rear view mir-
ror for more markings on the side or the
back of the truck. There were no other
markings. I couldnt keep my eyes on the
road, so I pulled over for fear that I would
get in an accident. The truck seemed to
have been flying, as if it had wings,
because then it disappeared!
After doing some research, I discov-
ered noted psychiatrist Carl Jung con-
cluded our unconscious minds have an
effect on the physical world around us just
as the physical world affects our con-
scious and unconscious minds. He coined
a theory for this type of event. It is the
phenomena of synchronicity.
Synchronicity is a meaningful coincidence
in what otherwise would be seen as seem-
ingly random events.
Coincidence or not, my interpretation
was that the truck was a sign that my
mother was on her way to heaven and my
prayer had been answered.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 16
Hearing Voices, Speaking in Tongues.
Cumberland Players, Little Theatre, 66 E,
Sherman Ave., Vineland. 7 p.m, Award-win-
ning show about love and schizophrenia.
Sponsored by Cumberland County
Guidance Center and NAMI (National
Alliance on Mental Illness) of Cumberland
County. No admission charge. 856-825-
6810, ext. 286 or dcunningham@ccgcnj.org.
For over a decade, Boston-based solo
performer Michael Mack has been preach-
ing a kind of gospel. The good news? His
mothers recovery from schizophrenia, as
told in his one-man play. Mack was five
years old when his mother was diagnosed
with paranoid schizophrenia, and his 80-
minute performance chronicles her
decades-long odyssey through psychosis
into redemption.
For more information, call 856-825-
6810, ext. 286, or e-mail
dcunningham@ccgcnj.org.
This award-winning production has played nationwide. Written in collaboration
with his family, Macks multi-character monologue gives voice to his mother and
the voices that haunt her, as well as his father and other family members as they
navigate a devastating reality.
My mothers illness profoundly shaped me,. Mack said. For decades, I felt
shadowed by it, afraid Id get sick too.
He explained that mental illness is more common than most people know. One
in every five families is affected by major mental illness. One in every 20 people
will suffer a clinical breakdown sometime in their lives. Increasingly recognized as a
brain disorder with physiological roots, mental illness is more common than cancer,
diabetes, or heart disease.
Mack thinks of the show as a kind of calling. It chose me, he added. After
serving in the U.S. Air Force, he enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technologys prestigious Sloan School of Management, expecting to major in busi-
ness science. He took a poetry class for elective credit. I needed an easy A, he
said. The course, however, changed his life. Childhood memories poured onto the
page as poems.
Encouraged by his mentor, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Maxine Kumin, and by
Nobel Prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney, Mack changed majors and graduated
from MITs Writing Program.
Excerpts from Hearing Voices, Speaking in Tongues have been published in the
Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), America, the Beloit Poetry
Journal, and Best Catholic Writing. They have also aired on National Public Radio
(NPR). The play was awarded a development grant from the Massachusetts
Cultural Councilthe states prestigious award for new theater works.

The 1940 Census
Recently released after 72-year waiting period, its the
first census to be accessible online.
O
n April 2, 2012, after the manda-
tory waiting period of 72 years,
the 1940 U.S. census was
released to the public. While the
availability of the information isnt anything
remarkable, its mode of release certainly is.
For the first time, the results of this survey,
undertaken every 10 years, are easily assess-
able to everyone online. Digital access to
these records will provide genealogists and
students of history a wealth of information
that can be obtained conveniently from
their home computers, but it also affords all
those simply interested in eavesdropping on
their ancestry an easy way to do so.
The digital release of the 1940 Census
offers a glimpse of the country as it existed
on April 1, 1940, poised between the Great
Depression and World War II while under
the leadership of Franklin D. Roosevelt and
his New Deal. Through a series of questions
ranging from age to employment to country
of origin, the records paint a portrait of an
American population recovering from one
crisis and unaware of its pending involve-
ment in the next.
What the Census Bureau discovered from
its survey was slowly leaked to the public by
the media over the course of the next year.
The earliest of the reports indicated that the
population of the continental United States
had increased by 7 percent since the previ-
ous census, a decline compared to the 16.1
percent increase between 1920 and 1930.
On November 20, 1940, The New York
Times announced that the population for
the continental U.S. totaled 131,409,881, a
figure that was amended by January 1, 1941
to 131,669,275, allowing for a 7.2 increase
since 1930. The total population of all U.S.
possessions was placed at 150,621,231.
Census studies arent simply restricted to
the number of people in residence at a partic-
ular time. The results indicate trends and
shifts in various areas of life, and those results
began appearing in the press as of January
1941. The New York Times wrote that, of the
52,840,000 that made up the labor force at
the time, one in 10 was unemployed.
Furthermore, the article reports that about
one out of every twenty of those working was
reported to be employed by the Federal
Government on projects of the Works Pro-
gress Administration, National Youth Admini-
stration, or Civilian Conservation Corps.
The census also indicated that there
were 100,000 more births in 1940 than the
previous year, a figure that ranked as the
highest since 1930. It was reported that the
birth rate had been in decline since 1921,
and census officials attributed the 1940
increase to post-World War I baby boomers
reaching adulthood and to an increased
number of marriages.
By March 1941, it was also determined that
taxes took one-fifth of the national income
during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1940.
The NewYork Times reported that the
largest share of taxes paid were for local gov-
ernments. The newspaper reported that the
total taxes collected by federal, state and local
governments amounted to $14,300,000,000.
By May 1942, it was announced that the
1940 census revealed the number of women
in the U.S. was nearly equal to the number
of men. One article reported that, in 1920,
men outnumbered women by more than
2,800,000, but by 1930 the difference had
been reduced to 1,499,114. Ten years later,
the gap had closed even further to 453,909,
provoking speculation that by 1945, the
amount of females in the country would
surpass the number of males.
In 1942, the sanctity of the census was
compromised when the U.S. loosened the
bonds of confidentiality in favor of national
security in a time of war and permitted cer-
tain agencies and bureaus access to specifics
of the study. Targeting Japanese civilians
believed to have evaded orders to evacuate
coastal areas following the bombing of Pearl
Harbor, government agencies found they
could use the addresses and other informa-
tion contained in the census in an attempt
to track down suspects.
This years online release of the 1940
census isnt really the first time in 72 years
the study has been made available. But it is
the first time the public can see it, and the
use of its information should be free of
suspicion. I

Spring
Planting Day
Green-thumbed volunteers beautify Downtown Vineland
T
his past Saturday, Main Street
Vineland held its annual Spring
Planting Day in the downtown,
and what a great day it was!
Lets start with the flowers. Hundreds
of beautiful flowers in virtually every
colorzinnias, dianthus, petunias,
marigolds, roses and morewere not only
generously donated by Ivy Acres of
Vineland, but delivered to us by them as
well. Over the years, Ivy Acres has just
been an incredible partner in helping us to
beautify the downtown during our Spring
and Fall Planting Days, and they have
asked for nothing in return.
Who planted all of the flowers? More
than 50 volunteers, thats who. Students
from the Gloria Sabater School and
Vineland High School, members of the
South Jersey Young Marines, local Girl
Scout troops, an area church and tradi-
tional Main Street Vineland volunteers
(including my younger daughter Georgia)
all pitched in.
In that morning alone, these volunteers
donated over 125 hours of their time to
making downtown Vineland a more beau-
tiful place and, just like our friends at Ivy
Acres, asked for nothing in return.
It truly is humbling to see so many
people, organizations and businesses
come together for a good cause and do so
without expectation of being paid back.
This truly is the embodiment of volun-
teerism, community service and good citi-
zenship. But how do you adequately thank
people for all that they have done and will
likely do again in the future, especially
when theyve told you that no thanks are
necessary? It seems to me that the best
thing to do is simply to say thank you
anyway and to truly appreciate the work
that theyve done.
So, on behalf of the Board of Directors
and staff of Main Street Vineland, and on
behalf of a grateful city, I say thank you to
all of those who played such an important
role in helping to beautify downtown
Vineland. I

2012 Trash Hunt
Rudy Dana passed away
this year, but his cause
continues as the founder of
the annual Trash Hunt
coordinated by the
Cumberland County
Improvement Authority
and the Cumberland
County Federation of
Sportsmen.
It started as a one-man
committee, said Lee
Widjeskog, member of the
Federation and now a
retired Fish & Game Supervisor. Over
260 volunteers from throughout
Cumberland County spent part of the
afternoon of March 24 patrolling area
woodlands in a search for trash as part of
the Cumberland County Clean
Communities 21st Annual Public Lands
Clean-up.
The Trash Hunt has become a won-
derful opportunity for the county com-
munities to show their support for pro-
tecting and preserving our environment,
said Improvement Authority Board
Member, Dale Jones. Over the last 21
years, thousands of volunteers have taken
the time to assist in cleaning areas of
Cumberland County.
This years event resulted in 20.73
tons of trash, 14.29 tons of car and truck
tires, and various bulky items removed
from Cumberland Countys woodland
areas.
Volunteer groups cleaned up areas
throughout the county, including Union
Lake, the Peaslee Fish and Wildlife
Management Area (off Union Road),
Clarks Mill, Bennetts Mill, Bevans
Tribbit Lane, Bevan Shaws Mill, Peeks
Preserve, Boswick Lake, Maurice River
Bluffs, and areas in Greenwich Township.
I would like to recognize Waste
Management, C&H Disposal, Giordanos,
and the City of Millville for their help in
making the Trash Hunt a success. Each
of them pre-positioned roll-off contain-
ers and trash compactors in strategic
locations throughout the county for vol-
unteers to dispose of the trash and tires
they collected, said Cumberland County
Recycling Coordinator, Dennis DeMatte,
Jr.
The Improvement Authority also
acknowledges the efforts of the following
groups that participated in the event:
Menantico Gun Club, NJ Fish and Game,
New Breed, Fish and Game Protective
Association, Good Sports, South Jersey
Quail Project, Citizens United, East
Creek, NJ Fur Harvesters, Cumberland
County Federation of Sportsmen,
Mauricetown Gun Club, Rosenhayn Gun
Club, Bill Simon Group, Area 17
Watershed Ambassador, and Venatores
Gun Club.
Two motorcycle clubs, Tri-County
Sportsmen Motorcycle Club and
Competition Dirt Riders also assisted in
the clean up.
The Sustainable Greenwich Team
again covered open land areas in
Greenwich Township and gathered over
a half ton of trash plus 121 car and 6
truck tires.
And, many individual volunteers
come out and help, reported DeMatte.
Over the last 21 years, the volunteers
Rudy Dana, far right, points out Trash Hunt
locations to Lee Widjeskog, left, and Jeff
Hammersted who have now taken over
some of the responsibility of organizing
federation members.

have seen the results of their efforts as
tons of trash have decreased. This is not
due to the lack of effort but rather as a
result of the determination of the volun-
teers to continually remove the waste,
through better enforcement, and the gen-
eral education outreach programs by the
Authority and communities involved in
the clean-up effort.

Home Arts Displays at
County Fair
The Home Arts Building will provide a
site for local non-professional artisans to
display their talents during the week of the
Cumberland County Fair, says Kurt
Bergen, president of the Cumberland
County Fair Association. This years Fair
at the County Fairgrounds on Carmel Road
in Millville will take place July 2-7, 2012.
According to Bergen, many people
have expressed an interest in entering in
entering exhibits for judging and display.
The Earth Matters
Here, at Caroline L. Reutter
School, all of the 5th grade classes
pitched in to help the Earth and our
schools playground area. At the end
of the day, all of the students picked
up trash and even planted some
vibrant flowers. We did this because
the Earth needs us! The deed we
performed had a meaning, a lesson
to teach. It taught us that no matter
how small the action, it makes a dif-
ference. It also taught us to be wise
with our actions because what one
does affects others, like a ripple
effect. What humans choose to do to
the Earth is affecting us whether we
realize it or not. Please just think,
what will the future generations have
to live with?

student in Mrs. Niewoehners class

Rain Garden Training
On Saturday, May 12, the Rutgers
Cooperative Extension of Cumberland
County will be hosting a free rain garden
workshop. The NJ Watershed
Ambassadors Program and the
Cumberland County Improvement
Authority are also partners in this event.
The goal is to teach the public about the
importance of rain gardens and to show
them how having a rain garden might ben-
efit their home. After a presentation, vol-
unteers will be able to install rain garden
plants at an existing rain garden on site.
Rain gardens are areas that are sloped
in and which have native flowers and
shrubs explains Meredith Brown of the
Watershed Ambassador Program. They

"New Lung, New Life": A
Fundraiser to Benefit Bleistine
On June 28, the New Lungs, New Life
Committee, formed of close friends and
acquaintances of Colette Bleistine will be
having a fundraiser featuring the band
Secret Service at The Savoy Inn. Colette is
the daughter of Nancee Bleistine, a princi-
pal in the Vineland Public School System
and she has been suffering with cystic
fibrosis all of her life. Her disease has pro-
gressed to the point that she has been
placed on the Organ Donor List to receive a
double lung transplant. Even though her
family has great insurance, the extra costs
that they will incur during this time will be
in excess of $ 50,000. All the proceeds will
go directly to Colette and her family.
The committee would greatly appreciate
any type of donation from businesses to be
raffled off in the Chinese auction and/or
Raffle Ticket sale during the event. In
return for your generosity, they will include
your companys business card as a part of
the donation listings in our biography
booklet about Colette.
Please have your donation ready for pick
up by Friday, May 18. This will provide
enough time to compile a list of donating
businesses for the booklet. Cash donations
would also be greatly appreciated (made
payable to Sue Kowalski).
If you have any questions or need fur-
ther information: New Lungs, New Life
Committee, Rosalie Forcinito Contact
Person, 856-794-6922 ext. 3657.

Thunder in the Park Sponsors

The Boys & Girls Club of Vineland, in
cooperation with Cumberland County
Riders, is seeking sponsors and vendors for
its Thunder in the Park event. The one-day
event will take place on Saturday, June 9
from 9a.m. to 6 p.m. at Giampietro Park in
Vineland. Thunder in the Park will feature
a motorcycle poker run, classic cars, music,
food and craft vendors and a kids section.
The event is family-friendly and all pro-
ceeds benefit programs for youth.

Compass Academy Charter
Welcomes International Visitors
The Compass Academy Charter School
Board of Trustees recently welcomed two
special guests from Rovira & Virgili
University in Tarragona, Spain. Dr. Luis
Marqus Molas, coordinator of the under-
graduate teaching program, and Dr. Jose
Cela-Ranilla, professor within the College
of Education, Department of Pedagogy are
conducting research into the effectiveness
of the Let Me Learn Process in K-12
schools, colleges, and corporate settings.
The Compass Academy Charter School will
be using this internationally recognized
Advanced Learning System when it opens
in September.
Drs. Marqus and Cela have spent the
last 10 days visiting schools both in the
Midwest and locally. In visiting Delsea
Regional, Rowan University, and
Cumberland County College, these distin-
guished professors have been thoroughly
investigating the effectiveness of the Let
Me Learn Process through interviews
with students, faculty, and staff; attending
classroom sessions; and working on joint
international research projects with US
universities.
In addition to these guests from abroad,
the Compass Academy Charter School also
received a gift from James and Karen
Alexander for the schools library. As a cul-
tural geographer professor at the
University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, James
Alexander traveled much and also coordi-
nated UW-Eau Claires study abroad pro-
gram for many years. Their gift of multicul-
tural books will help educate the incoming
students of the world around them.
The school is offering informational
sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays any
time between 6 and 8 pm. For more infor-
mation, parents can call 856-405-5395 or

Film Fest Highlights Short Films
Made by Women
LUNAFEST, a nationwide film festival
of award-winning short films, by, for and
about women will be hosted again this year
by Vineland Gynecology Associates. This
years films will be screened for one night
only at the SJH Fitness Connection on
Thursday, June 7 at 7:30 pm.
Tickets to the festival are $10 for general
admission and $8 for students and seniors.
All of the film festivals net proceeds go to
charity. To date, LUNAFEST has raised
nearly $1.2 million. Fifteen percent of every
dollar raised goes to LUNAFESTs main
beneficiary, the Breast Cancer Fund, and 85
percent of every dollar raised in Vineland
goes the New Jersey Coalition for Battered
Women.
This year, nine films were chosen from
thousands of submissions to be featured at
LUNAFEST. These nine films showcase
women filmmakers and explore issues
important to women, said Dr. Jonathan
Gewirtz.
Each of the featured films is about 15
minutes long, and covers various women-
related topics. This seasons program is
filled with stories of reflection, hope and
humor and are a great way of connecting
women in the community through film. On
the grim side of the films, theres former
supermodel Christy Turlington Burns doc-
umentary expos Every Mother Counts:
Obstetric Fistula. Other film subjects
include a comedy about womens body
images, a missed opportunity for love, a
womens rugby team, and Iranian women
navigating their cultures gender roles.
The film festival is expected to last
about two hours. To preview the films, visit
http://www.lunafest.org/vineland.
A silent auction beginning at 7 p.m. pre-
cedes the festival screening. Proceeds from
this auction also benefit the New Jersey
Coalition for Battered Women.

festival, call 856-462-6350. I

VINELAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS 3RD QUARTER PRINCIPALS LIST
Vineland Public Schools released the list of the students in grades 3-12 who earned Principal's List honors for the third marking period. To achieve this distinction, high school students must have a
grade-point average of 3.75 or above. In elementary and middle schools, students must have all A's. Please note that student grades at the high schools are weighted while those at the elementary
and middle schools are not. As a result, the grade-point average for achieving the principals list at the elementary and middle schools is 4.00 while at the high school its 3.75.

Author Gives Presentation on the Titantic
St. Mary School third grade stu-
dents recently learned about the
Titanic and its relevance to their
ancestry. In commemoration of the
100th anniversary of the sinking of
the Titanic, students in Mrs. Valerie
Myersons class journeyed through
a unit about the Titanic. Each stu-
dent researched passengers that
were on board the maiden voyage.
Then, they dressed up as that person during a recent Titanic Day, complete with
a luncheon served by volunteer parents. In its eighth year, this special Titanic
Day at St. Mary School is a unique educational tool that engages students to
learn about their history and how it relates to them both locally and globally.
This year, students also learned a little more about this tragic voyage when
local Vineland author, W. Mae Kent, gave a presentation to St. Mary School stu-
dents. Her presentation, The Other Side of the Titanic, focused on important,
lesser known passengers on the maiden voyage. Specifically, Ms. Kents presen-
tation was about the women and minorities who were first class passengers on
the ship. Her presentation included multi-racial couples and their children and
upper echelon passengers from Haiti, Japan and Egypt. Kent is the author of
Titanic: The Untold Story, a novel about the Titanic that features a black hero.
St. Marys Students from grades 3, 7, and 8 listen on a W. Mae Kent gives a presentation
on the minorities who were first-class Passengers on the Titanic.

Real Estate { BY SUSANNA PHILIPPOUSSIS, BROKER SALESPERSON, MATURO REALTY }
I
O
n May 17, along with other Realtors
from Cumberland County, I will
join Realtors fromacross the coun-
try in Washington, D.C. in a Rally
to Protect the American Dream. I cant think
of a better place to fight for home ownership
and investment in real estate.
The rally will be held at the Washington
Monument. Realtors will gather on the
National Mall, home to so many historic
marches and rallies. To our back will be the
Lincoln Memorial and the Reflecting Pool, to
our side the White House and Treasury
Building.
This rally will show our elected officials
that no one cares more about revitalizing the
real estate market than REALTORS. Here
are some of the issues that we are taking a
stand on:
Taxation: An exploding federal debt has
forced tax reform into the limelight. As a
result, a variety of tax laws, including those
affected by commercial and residential real
estate, could be reviewed with a focus on
raising revenue.
Mortgage Interest Deduction: We
oppose any changes that would limit or
undermine current law. The current Federal
income tax deduction for interest paid on
debt secured by a first or second home
should not be further restricted.
Cancellation of Mortgage Debt: We
support further extension of this law, which
is set to expire on December 31, 2012.
Capital Gains: Exclusion on Sale of
Residence: We oppose any changes that
would reduce or limit the capital gains
exemption ($250,000/$500,000) on the sale
of a home.
Property Tax Deduction: We oppose any
changes that would reduce or eliminate cur-
