Alex Vega Period 5 3-29-12 Good contrasts Bad

Vega 1

All around the world, people deal with good and bad. The good is mainly done with love and brings happiness as well as success. The bad, in contrast to good, is done out of hatred and will lead to failure, problems, and sometimes death. Even though good and bad are incredibly different, they almost always come in as a pair. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times (Dickens, 7). In A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens uses Madame Defarge to symbolize bad and Miss Pross to symbolize good. The bad created by Madame Defarge was the cause of her hatred and anger. Hate forms as a result of suffering and pain but it does not justify for any wrong doing. Madame Defarge had suffered from the death of her family, which was caused by the Marquis. She wanted to get revenge on him and to the last of [his] race. Revenge blinded her, making her do terrible things that brought pain to others and eventually led her to death. Nothing good can ever result of evil. Madame Defarge symbolizes the bad from the world and the consequences that follow it. Unlike Madame Defarge, Miss Pross was a woman of good. All the love she had for the Manette family allowed her to do nothing but good. When someone loves so strongly, they only care about the happiness and well being of others, and there are no barriers that can stop them. Love gives strength, causes good, and brings success. It is also a source that helps someone overcome anything in life. Miss Pross was able to defeat Madame Defarge thanks to her good heart. Her desire to help the

Vega 2 family she loved and cared for so much was stronger than the hate Madame Defarge carried. Good will always be rewarded no matter what. Bad and good represent the imperfection of the world. Everyone has a choice on what path they want to take. Although people know that bad always brings consequences and problems, there are many temptations and emotions that drag them towards it. It is not easy for one to always do the right thing because there is no perfection in life, but all there is to do is try to avoid whats wrong. Hate messes up the world and tears it to pieces while love brings it back together. The world will never have good without some evil being involved. They are two things essential for life. Charles Dickens demonstrates how both affect the lives of people throughout time. Madame Defarge has so much hatred and dies while Miss Pross can only live to love.
