2. (a) Explain under what circumstances would you adopt a gravity dam and earth-
ern dam.
(b) What are the factors which effect the selection of type of a dam. Explain.
[8+8]
3. A concrete gravity dam has maximum water level 305m, bed level 225m, top R.L
of dam 309m, d/s face slope starts at R.L 300m, d/s slope 2:3, tail water is nil,
upstream face of dam is vertical, center line of drainage gallery is 8m d/s of u./s
face, uplift pressure is 100% at heel, 50% at line of gallery and zero at toe. Weight of
concrete is 2.4 t/m3 . Considering only weight, water pressure and uplift, determine
5. (a) Compare and contrast standard crested shaft spillway and Flat crested shaft
spillway.
(b) Determine the discharge through a chute spillway of ogee crest. Length of
spillway is 250m. Height of spillway crest above u/s approach channel is 10
m. Width of approach channel is 250 m and depth of water over spillway crest
is 5m. Assume coefficient of discharge as 2.5 neglecting velocity of approach.

(b) What is Hydraulic Jump? Describe hydraulic jump Computations by giving
different expressions involved in it. [8+8]
8. (a) What is a cross drainage work. What are different types of cross drainage
works.
(b) Describe with a neat sketch aqueduct. [8+8]

1. (a) Discuss the various factors that govern the selection of site for a reservoir.
(b) Describe different storage zones of a reservoir with the help of a neat sketch.
[8+8]
2. (a) Discuss the geological and topographical features which effect the selection of
type of dam. [8]
(b) Differentiate between:
i. Overflow and Non-overflow dam
ii. Low dam and high dam
iii. Rigid and Non-Rigid dam
iv. Storage Dam and Diversion dam [8]
4. (a) Describe a typical zoned earth dam with the help of a neat sketch. Also
describe the significance of various zones in zoned dams.
(b) A homogeneous earthen dam is 21.5m high and has a free board of 1.5m. A
flow net was constructed and the following results were noted.
Number of potential drops = 12
Number of flow channels =3
The dam has a horizontal filter of 15m length at its drawdown end. Calculate
the discharge per metre length of the dam if the coefficient of permeability of
the dam material is 2.7 × 10−3 cm/sec. [8]
5. (a) Explain the qualities of a good siphon. Describe with the help of a sketch, the
working of a volute siphon.

Code No: RR320104 Set No. 2
(b) A siphon spillway has height of the throat 1.5m and width of throat 4 m.
At the design flow, the tail water elevation is 7m below the summit of the
siphon and the head water elevation is 2 m above the summit. Taking cd
as 0.6 and treating siphon as a mouthpiece determine the capacity of siphon.
Also determine the head that would be required on an ogee spillway 3.8m long
to discharge this flow if cd is 2.25. What length of this ogee weir would be
required to discharge the same flow with a head of 2.2m on the crest, assuming
the cd to be constant as 2.25. [8+8]
6. (a) Discuss the different conditions governing the relationship between JHC and
TWC and the corresponding energy dissipation arrangement required.
(b) Describe different stilling basin appurtenances. [8+8]
7. Design crest wall and cistern of a sarda type fall on a channel of 15 cumecs, bed
width 18m, depth 1.5m, U/S FSL 101m, bed level is 99.5m, No supply Level is
90.00m, Fall 1.0m, side slope is 1/2 :1. Assume suitable missing data. [16]
