Lowercase Alphabet Appliqu Designs

PRECIOUS PATTERNS

The lowercase alphabet appliqus are fun and easy to make. They include the 26 letters of the alphabet plus a small star and heart that can be used to dot the i and j, or just for ornamentation like the t-shirt in the photo above. Sizes of letters vary. To give you an idea of the approximate size, the a is 2 3/4 tall by 1 7/8 wide. You can enlarge or reduce the letters to make them any size youd like. Use the letters to appliqu words on tshirts, tote bags, pillowcases, etc. Cotton print fabrics were used for appliqus on sample t-shirt. The alphabet is fun for girls and boys! Instructions are given to sew a machine straight stitch around the appliqu letters. Other options would be to sew a machine zig zag or satin stitch around the edges. If you dont have a sewing machine, you can embroider the blanket stitch or sew a running stitch by hand around the edges of the appliqu pieces. Materials eeded
Light to medium weight fabrics for appliqus Iron-on fusible web (Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 Fusible Web by The Warm Company was used for sample appliqus but any fusible web for fabric will work fine) Sewing thread (or embroidery floss) color that coordinates with fabrics a color that is a little Darker than the fabric, looks nice

Instructions for Dream Appliqu on a T-shirt

1. Print the alphabet pattern pages. Cut out the letters the b is also a d (turn the b over so it faces in the opposite direction) and a p (turn the b over and upside down). The n is also a u (turn the n upside down).

2. Place the cut-out pattern shapes on the fusible web paper with the right side of the shapes facing down. Then draw around the edges of the pattern shapes on the fusible web paper. TIP: the finished appliqu will face in the opposite direction of the way it is drawn on the fusible web paper. Roughly cut around the drawn shapes about 1/4 from the edges.

3. Fuse drawn pattern shapes to the wrong side of the appropriate fabrics, following manufacturers instructions.

4. Cut out the fabric appliqu shapes along the drawn lines as shown in left photo below. OPTIONAL: After I cut out the dream letters, I decided that it would be fun to add a few stars so I followed steps 1 through 4 and cut out three stars as shown in right photo below.

5. Fuse appliqu shapes to t-shirt, following manufacturers instructions. On the sample t-shirt, I staggered the letters up and down to make the design more interesting.

6. Sew around appliqu letters close to edges (not more than 1/8 from edges). You can sew over previous stitching as needed so that you dont have to stop and start threads as shown on bottom tip of star. You can begin and end stitching anywhere on the design. For the d, I began stitching on the bottom as shown in photo below. When you are finished sewing around the letter, sew over the stitching at the beginning about 1/2 so stitching doesnt come undone. Remember to sew around the inside edges of the letters that have openings like the d. The following four photos will show the process of stitching around the shape (there isnt a right or wrong way to sew around the appliqu pieces the photos are intended to be a guideline to get you started). If you prefer, you can hand embroider the blanket stitch or stem stitch, or hand sew a running stitch around the edges of the appliqu pieces.

TIP: If you want the appliqu design to stay looking new, its best to hand wash the garment.
