4 Foreword
Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria. It carries
the feeling of a country town, still it is not a place that will Europe In Your Pocket
rock you to sleep. On the contrary, Plovdiv has much to
offer. Many visitors, both foreign and Bulgarian, are lured
to the city not only because of its numerous historical
treasures, but also for its various trade shows on display
at the premises of the International Plovdiv Fair. This
edition of In Your Pocket will show you what’s on for the
upcoming months. For first timers to Plovdiv we recom-
mend that you go to the ancient heart of the city and get
a taste of the mixture in architecture on display. Much of
the old splendour has been restored to its original beauty.
Check out the Old Town section (page 38) and follow the
published map for a guided tour.We added more in depth
information about many houses and churches. If you have
any spare moments left, go visit Perperikon (page 45),
Pamporovo (page 46), the village of Hisarya (page 53)
or the Equestrian-sport base “Han Krum” (page 54). All
are worth experiencing. Return to Plovdiv for the Autumn
International Plovdiv Fair and don’t miss our 2nd edition for
this year or download it from www.inyourpocket.com. If you
would like to share your experience or give us your opinion
on places you visited in Plovdiv, please, drop us an email
on bulgaria@inyourpocket.com or leave your comments
for others to read on the web.

Electricity
Bulgaria runs on a 220 volt electricity supply (so some
visitors will need to bring a transformer). Standard con
tinental two-prong plugs are used, so others will need to
furnish themselves with an adaptor if they want to use their
hairdryer/phone/ charger/laptop.
Smoking
Cafès, bars and restaurants are required by law to provide an
area for non-smokers. In practice however this will probably
consist of one or two tables surrounded on all sides by
nicotine addicts happily puffing away.
Visas
Citizens of the EU, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the
USA can stay in the country visa-free for 90 days. Nationals
of other countries should contact the Bulgarian embassies or
consulates in their home countries about visa arrangements.
Note that visas cannot be obtained at the border.
