Council Adopts new SPACE USE Policy As St. Matthews church has grown, so have the number of small groups that meet weekly throughout the church. As being an important part of the Chester Springs and surrounding communities, outside organizations have also begun to use our facilities. In an effort to ensure that the use of St. Matthews facilities are properly used and maintained, council has adopted a NEW SPACE USE policy. This will include a list of rules and expectations, a hold harmless form and request form. When making a request to use our church facility, please be sure there is enough time from the date of the request to the date of the event to gain approval from council. Council meets the second Wednesday of the month. There will be no special council meeting to approve facility requests. Any questions about the new Space Use Police should be directed to any council member. Names and positions listed below. _________________________________________________________

From the Director of Discipleship: Commencing with our Faith Journeys

On May 18th I will be graduating from the Lutheran Theological Seminary of Philadelphia, receiving a Masters Degree of Religion with a specialization in Integrative Theology. I wanted to take some of this space to say a special word of thanks to all those who have been helping me and praying for me along the way of this journey. Its meant the world to me. And its been a long journey. I began the process way back in 2003 and at times it seemed as if I was destined to be a perpetual student. Almost nine years is a long time to take to get a degree! It occurs to me however, that the journey is not over and indeed, I AM called to be a perpetual student. The Jesus we follow was called, Rabbi or teacher and a disciple is a student or follower. In the Great Commission Jesus commanded his disciples to go and make disciples of all nations. That includes me. That includes you. We are all students of the Teacher. One of the things I know I will face as I move forward beyond my graduation is to make sure that I still give myself opportunities to learn and grow in my faith. Graduation does not end the learning process. Here at St. Matthews those opportunities abound. As always, I encourage you to make the most of Christian Formation at St. Matthews. We have something for everyone, and if we dont, please talk to me and Ill help you find a way to make it happen. Another type of graduation that happens this month is Confirmation. We have a great group of 8th graders who will be confirmed on May 20th. Theyve worked hard for the past two years to get to this point, but like me they still have a lot to learn. Truthfully, confirmation is not a graduation at all. Instead it is a beginning. The word perhaps that is better to apply both to confirmation AND to my graduation is commencement. The confirmation students and I all now are simply commencing into the next stage of our faith journey, not graduating from it. Learning is something that we never finish. I might be getting my degree this month, but there is still much for me to learn. And a lot of that learning will come from many of you. Share what you know with others, and learn from others in return! Contact me at awilcox@stmatthewslutheran.org if you have any questions! Peaceand have a fruitful journey! Allison Wilcox

Thirty dollars will help feed and care for a child for a month. Heres a fact! Every day, as many as 11,000 kids die from hunger and related causes. Some starve. Some get sick and waste away. Either way, our kids want to help to do something about it! Thank you for supporting St. Matthews youth

From Your Friendly Church Gardener

EASTER The English word Easter is borrowed from the name of a pagan spring festival and is related to the fact that the sun rises in the east. Why Do We Celebrate Easter for 50 Days? Most people think of Easter as a single day. Its never had the commercial appeal of Christmas, and because it always falls on Sunday, most people dont get an additional day off from work. This year, the Easter season stretches all the way to May 27, the Day of Pentecost. Lent, which sometimes feels like its stretching on forever, is actually forty days long. Easter, on the other hand, is all of fifty days long. The great fifty days of Pentecost is an invitation to explore more deeply the weather of the heart, to awaken our memory of Gods presence and power in our lives, to look more closely at all the rich and varied textures of creation.

On Sunday, April 15, following the 9:00 worship service, mulching was completed around all the single trees on the church campus. Thank you to: Bob and Wendy David, Greg Grissom, Ed Mourar and son Logan, Matt Sobolewski, Mark Sabatino, Chris Tormey and sons Jack and Patrick. All work was completed by noon, at which time the crew was treated to a great picnic lunch in front of the church office. Thank you for a job well done! Ray Young, your friendly church gardener and Jim Rutledge, property chair _________________________________________

Choice Dollars

Days and Dates for Easter and the Easter Season

The date for Easter Day in the Western Church falls on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox. Therefore, Easter may fall anywhere from March 22 to April 25. All other festival dates of the Church Year (except for Advent through the Epiphany) depend on the date of Easter, which may vary by more than a month! **St. Matthews supports the Navajo Lutheran Mission by sending Campbell product labels and Box Tops for Education yearly. The magazine of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

In various forms The Lutheran has been a beacon for American Lutherans since 1831. That year saw the launch of the Lutheran Observer, one of some 40 publications by Lutheran denominations that merged over the decades to eventually form the ELCA in 1987 and The Lutheran in 1988.

The Lutheran

Each month, this print and online publication nurtures awareness of God's presence in our lives, connects ELCA members with each other and the global Christian community, and provides an open forum for lively discussion.

Spring is here! But lets all remember that hunger pains might not be past from winter months. With the trees and flowers in bloom, we often think of this time of year as renewed life. Lets please renew our commitment of thinking of our neighbors in need, and bring in any non-perishable food or support items to the CLC Food Pantry collection area. Our three local Food Pantries look forward to our continued support. __________________________________________

GOOD WORKS - April 14

Bob David, Mindy & John Elmer, Addy Masalitis, David Sletvold and his son Nathan, Jim & Louise Rutledge, and Ray Young spent a beautiful Saturday volunteering at Margarita and Jose's home. The volunteers installed three windows in the living room. All the smoke detectors were checked and new detectors were installed. We also had lunch with Margarita and Jose's five children ages 8 to 14 years: Adriana, Ricardo, Juan, Eduardo, and Jose. THANKS to Mike Long for preparing the lunch on Saturday for all the volunteers and the family members. Volunteers are needed to give of their time & talents the second Saturday of each month. The next work day is Saturday, May 12th. If you are interested in volunteering, there is a sign-up sheet in the CLC lobby. A volunteer is also needed to prepare and bring lunch to the volunteers on Saturday - all lunch costs are reimbursed. St. Matthews is a partner church and this year we have adopted Margarita and Jose's home- our 5th adopted home. Good Works is a Christian ministry dedicated to repairing homes and restoring hope to lives in Chester County ( www.goodworksinc.org ).

MISSION IN
If it is encouraging, devote yourself to encouraging others. If it is sharing, share generously. If it is leading, lead enthusiastically. If it is helping , help cheerfully

Mission Trip to the Gulf Coast March 18 to 24

The middle of March, Jim Rutledge, Kevin Smith, Don Werth, and Ray Young traveled to Ocean Springs, Mississippi to continue the work to repair homes that were devastated by Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005. Nearly seven years later the need for volunteers continues as many of the homeowners do not have the funds to repair their homes. Previously all the work projects had been coordinated by Camp Victor. Over fifty thousand volunteers were housed and fed there in the past six years. Camp Victor is now slated to close in 2012; there is no more funding available. The camp has the capacity to house over two hundred volunteers each week. We were four of the six volunteers that stayed there that week. The projects are now coordinated by the Adopt A Home Ministry. AAHM is working with local churches in the Ocean Springs community to coordinate volunteers and provide funding to purchase the building supplies. St. Matts team worked with Evelyn & Jim from Washington state and Tim & Bert from Ohio. The main focus of the weeks work was to demolish the interior walls and flooring of Miss Odessas kitchen in preparation for the next weeks arriving volunteers who will install new flooring, walls, and kitchen cabinets. During the week we also did carpentry work, electrical work, HVAC work, and cleared a backyard of debris. The St. Matts team also emptied a POD storage unit to assist an elderly homeowner moving her furniture back into her home. Part of the mission trip is also to visit with previous homeowners whose houses we have repaired to provide our continued support to them. We were fortunate to have good weather and to work with other volunteers who were committed to make a difference. The smiles, thank you, and hugs from Miss Odessa and the other homeowners certainly made the trip memorable. Jim Rutledge Mission Coordinator

I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? Isaiah 43:19a

Pledge Sunday was a tremendous success in spite of the inclement weather and the congregation spoke in unison their support of the continued growth of our community of faith. We have been blessed over the years with members giving their time, talents and treasure to insure that each successive generation has a vibrant worship home. I am proud to announce that $330,000 was pledged on Pledge Sunday, April 22, from about one-third of the members of St. Matthew's. I know that over the next couple of weeks that we will receive many more cards from families who were not able to attend Pledge Sunday and that we will reach our construction goal of $400,000 and our tithe goal of $40,000. Many thanks to the entire congregation for your support during this process. Patrick Miller and Rob Kratz

For those of you who couldnt make it to Pledge Sunday, April 22, the pledges with the match totaled $330,000. We still have a little ways to go but Im confident well make it. Sandy Knapp Council President

A PARABLE
Once upon a time there was an elderly couple, call them the Joneses, who were very good and wise and loving. Each week they would invite some neighbors to have dinner with them. The food was superb and because they were so wise, the conversation was challenging and enlightening. One young woman came to dinner almost every week. She looked forward to it and hated to miss. She enjoyed the food and felt that she learned many helpful things. She often felt challenged to grow in important ways. The Joneses were always glad to see her and they loved her very much. Another man also came every week. He came because he ought to. He did not feel he should say no to the invitation. Although he often ate the food without really tasting it and often did not really participate in the conversation, he was surprised by some new insight and at tough times it was nice to think of the kindness of the Joneses. They wished he would get more involved with what happened and get more out of it, because they loved him very much. There was a young man who came a couple of times a year to be nice and at other times when he felt particularly lonely and once when he was very hungry and needed a good meal. Usually, he was busy with other things on dinner nights. The Joneses wished he were free more often. They enjoyed his company and they loved him very much. One neighbor who lived a couple of doors down never came to dinner. Nobody was sure why not. The Joneses missed spending time with her. They were very disappointed, but they continued to invite her, for they loved her very much.

Pastor Jim
PS: You and I have our invitations. Hope to see you there. PSS: Keep the call committee in your prayers. They are preparing themselves to interview candidates. That process will begin in the near future when they receive names from the Bishops office.
