Newaygo County Girl Scouts
held a Swaps Event at the Jack
D. Jones Elementary School in
White Cloud on Friday, April 20.
SWAPS are a Girl Scout craft in
which girls trade with each other
to promote friendship. When
girls swap their pins, they make
new friends, and that is what girl
scouting is all about.
Each SWAP is a memory of
a special event or Girl Scout Sis-
ter. Swaps should tell something
about the givers or their group.
(Girls may include their address
or email information so others
can write to them.) and represent
the givers country, community,
or local Girl Scout council.
Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore
to Shore serves more than 17,000
girls, ages 5 to 17, in 30 counties
in northern and western Michi-
gan. With the support of more
than 4,500 committed volun-
teers and 45 qualifed staff mem-
bers, girls develop qualities that
will serve them all their lives,
such as leadership, strong values,
social conscience, and conviction
about their own potential and
self-worth.
The Girl Scouts of Michi-
gan Shore to Shore Council is a
United Way agency. For more
information about Girl Scouts of
Michigan Shore to Shore Coun-
cil, please call (231) 744-4774,

The Newaygo High School Jazz Band
participated in the Ninth Annual Jazz Festi-
val in Hastings on Friday, April 13. The stu-
dents performed at the First United Meth-
odist Church in the morning and visited
other venues throughout the town to enjoy
the music of other local area high school jazz
bands.
The Newaygo band, under the direction of
Daniel Barnett, performed for Clinician Bob
Nixon, were provided comments to enhance
their playing skills. Nixon holds a bachelors
and masters degrees in music education and
a bachelors degree in jazz performance, all
from Morehead State University in Kentucky.
He has served for 28 years as the band and
orchestra director for both middle and high
schools at Grand Rapids Public Schools. Ad-
ditionally, Nixon is a member of the adjunct
faculty at Aquinas College, where he teaches
music and has directed the schools jazz en-
semble. While as a music educator, Nixon has
played nearly all band instruments, his real
interest lies in woodwinds, particularly saxo-
phone, fute, clarinet and bassoon. Over the
years, Nixon has traveled across the United
States with various bands. He has performed
with some of the great entertainers of our
day including Dionne Warwick, Bob Hope,
Jerry Lewis, Robert Goulet, Louie Belson,
Red Skelton, Marvin Gay and the Spinners,
The Temptations and the Tommy Dorsey Or-

medically vulnerable. The project is supported
by Grant Award Number 1 D04RH23621-01-00
from the Health Resources and Services Ad-
ministration.
The Rural FitKids is a healthy lifestyle pro-
gram developed to address childhood obesity.
The comprehensive program combines basic
education about nutrition, behavior and exer-
cise with a wide range of physical activities. The
goal is to provide an effective solution for over-
weight children who have been unable to make
positive changes on their own.
Designed for kids and their families, Ru-
ral FitKids consists of a 12-week course and
a 4-week follow-up course. Additionally, the
program features in-home visits by a Commu-
nity Health Worker to support teachings in the
home and with the students family.
United Lifestyles will direct and oversee
the program, which will launch in three rural
school communities: Greenville Public Schools,
Hesperia Community
Schools and Reed City Area Public Schools.
Spectrum Health Reed City and Spectrum
Health Gerber Memo-
rial Hospital provide local
staffng for their respective
school. Staff roles such as
site coordinators, registered
dietitians, exercise instruc-
tors and community health
workers will work onsite
at each of the three school
districts to implement the
program.
United Lifestyles Executive Director, Jodie
Faber, spearheaded the process to apply for
grant funds and developed the Rural FitKids
program based on FitKids 360, a Grand Rapids
based First Steps childhood obesity program.
Childhood obesity is on the rise across our na-
tion, including in rural communities here in
Michigan. It has been reported that Montcalm,
Newaygo and Osceola counties currently have
adolescent obesity rates above the average rates
in Michigan. Data also demonstrates that the
nutrition habits of kids in these counties lag be-
hind their peers across the states, said Faber.
Rural FitKids is an opportunity to teach
kids in rural school districts the meaning of
health, how to become healthy and stay healthy.
The program works in tandem with their par-
ents or guardians with the intention of making
long-term changes within the home.
Rural FitKids will be offered to children ages
5 to 16 and their parents or support partners.
Qualifying children must have a Body Mass In-
dex (BMI) at the 85th percentile or higher and
have written referral from a health care pro-
vider.. Faber has set the goal of enrolling 360
children across the three school districts over
the three years.
United Lifestyles was one of 70 grantees to
receive funds from HHS.
We feel honored to have been selected to
receive funds from HHS, said Faber. Because
of these funds and the commitment of Spec-
trum Health, we will have the opportunity to
work with kids to better their health and lead
longer, healthier lives.

TO THE EDITOR:
A sad thing happened a few
weeks ago in Coopersville when
two teenagers from the same fam-
ily died. Their car ran into the back
of a school bus. I was surprised to
see the rapidity with which the
state legislature took into consid-
eration this event and has come up
with a remedy. They have passed a
law making the lighting on Michi-
gan school buses much more vis-
ible. Hats off to the legislature.
This brings to my mind another
sad event that has not been rem-
edied. A few years ago an ambu-
lance going south to north on the
Newago - Montcalm County Line
Road hit a car going west to east
on West Kendaville Road. People
were killed. The intersection of
those two roads is a dangerous
one. There are visibility hazards
like barns and houses and high
weeds at that intersection. There
are stop signs on the northwest
and southeast corners. There are
no stop signs on the southwest or
northeast corners. Drivers on Ken-
daville ride at high speeds through
that intersection. The county line
road has stop signs but some driv-
ers dont stop. This intersection is
not far from Tri-County Schools
and their buses go through it. It
is the scene of another accident
waiting to happen. When I asked
why that intersection doesnt have
a FOUR-way stop, I was told that
the two counties involved havent
agreed to do anything, therefore
nothing has been done.
Are the lives lost there any less
signifcant than the lives of those
two teens in Coopersville? If the
state legislature can remedy a
problem of school buses so quick-
ly, why cant two counties remedy
the problem of the intersection of
Kendaville and Newago County
Line Road and furnish it with a 4 -
way stop? Surely one stop sign per
county is not too expensive when it
comes to saving lives.

SIDNEY TWP. The Michigan
State Police (MSP) Lakeview Post is
investigating a personal injury traffc
crash that occurred at 2:05 p.m. on
Friday, May 4, 2012, on M-66, just
north of Holland Lake Road in Mont-
calm Countys Sidney Township,.
The preliminary investigation
revealed a vehicle traveling north-
bound on M-66 lost control, crossed
the center line and collided with a
southbound vehicle. A 38-year-old
Stanton woman, the lone occupant of
the southbound vehicle, was pinned
in. M-66 north of Holland Lake Road
was closed for nearly two hours while
emergency crews worked to free the
driver. She was then airlifted to But-
terworth Hospital in Grand Rapids
for serious, but non-life threatening
injuries.
The male driver, a 19-year-old
Kentwood resident was the lone oc-
cupant of the northbound vehicle. He
was treated and released at the scene.
Alcohol and/or drugs are not be-
lieved to be a factor in the crash. The
crash remains under investigation
and will be forwarded to the Mont-
calm County Prosecutors Offce.

ed by the Montcalm County Sheriffs

In Loving Memory of my Husband
Leonard W. Butler Jr.
April 7, 1939 - May 24, 2011
The moment that you died, my heart split in two,
the one side lled with memories the other died
with you.
I often lie awake at night, when the world is fast
asleep, I take a walk down memory lane, with tears
upon my cheeks.
Remembering you is easy, I do it every day, but
missing you is a heartache, that never goes away.
I hold you tight within my heart, and there you
will remain, life has gone on without you, but it
will never be the same.
I love and miss you every day Len.
Your Wife, Arlene

GREENVILLE May is Stroke
Awareness Month. Do you know
your stroke facts?

Stroke can be fatal. Its the No.
4 cause of death and the leading
cause of adult disability in the U.S.
Stroke can happen to anyone at
any time, regardless of race, sex or
age.
Stroke is more common in
women.
African Americans have almost
twice the risk of stroke compared
to whites.
The most important thing to know is
that most strokes can be prevented
and, when strokes occur, swift, ap-
propriate response can save lives.
Act FAST when the signs of stroke
appear:

F = Face
Ask the person to smile. Does one
side of the face droop?
A = Arms
Ask the person to raise both arms.
Does one arm drift downward?
S = Speech
Ask the person to repeat a simple
phrase. Is his/her speech slurred
or strange?
T = Time
If you notice any of these signs,
call 911 immediately.
Spectrum Health treats more stroke
patients than any other provider
in the Michigan. In honor of Stroke
Awareness Month, Spectrum Health
is holding free stroke education and
screening events this month in sev-
eral of its facilities. Participants will
be able to nd out if they are at risk
for stroke and what they can do to
prevent stroke. Preregistration is not
required.

Stroke education and screenings will
be available at United and Kelsey
Hospital on the following date and
locations:

Wed., May 18th - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
United Hospital, Conference Room
B, 615 S. Bower Street
Fri., May 19th - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Kelsey Hospital, Family Consultation
Room, 418 Washington Avenue

Spectrum Health also has a stroke
risk assessment posted online at
www.spectrumhealth.org/stro-
kerisk. The assessment will help
people learn about their personal
risk factors and what they can do to
prevent stroke.

Spectrum Health Butterworth and
Blodgett hospitals are certied
primary stroke centers and provide
prompt stroke patient care, including
advanced treatment options as well
as other dened standards of The
Joint Commission, the American
Heart Association and the American
Stroke Association.

Health Matters
Organic Fruits and Vegetables can Reduce Your Toxic Load
I am passing this information along from Dr. Louisa Williams, ND. She is the author of, Radical Medicine. We should
all read this book. This information is very helpful.
A 2003 study of Seattle school children showed switching to organic food immediately lowered pesticide levels in
the body. The study tracked preschool children and analyzed their urine for evidence of exposure to ve different kinds
of pesticides. Researchers found that children eating conventional diets had an average of six- to almost nine-times
higher for children with conventional diets than for children with organic diets.
A 2006 study conducted at Emory University supported this conclusion. Researchers found that upon switching from
a conventional to an organic diet, urinary levels of two organophosphate pesticide metabolites decreased immediately
to an undetectable level.
Very few of the families studied ate 100% organic food. The researchers dened an organic diet as one that consisted
of 75% organic foods. Making small changes can improve your familys health! Find a Westin A. Price Foundation chapter
in your area. They know where to get organic or at least good clean food. Look on the Web.
If you cant buy all organic at least do it for those fruits and vegetables with the highest pesticide levels (the dirty
dozen) and dramatically reduce your familys pesticide exposure.
The Environmental Working Group, a consumer advocacy and research group lists many of the dangers of pesticides.
The group has developed a list of the Dirty Dozen, 12 fruits and vegetables you should always buy organic because
testing has shown when conventionally grown they are loaded with pesticides. The Clean 15 includes fruits and veggies
that have the lowest pesticide levels.
The Dirty Dozen:
1. Peach 2. Apple 3. Bell pepper 4. Celery 5. Nectarine 6. Strawberry 7. Cherry 8. Kale 9. Lettuce
(iceberg) 10. Grape (imported) 11. Carrot 12. Pear
Clean 15
1. Onion 2. Avocado 3. Sweet corn 4. Pineapple 5. Mango 6. Asparagus 7. Sweet Pea 8. Kiwi 9.
Cabbage 10. Eggplant 11. Papaya 12. Watermelon 13. Broccoli 14. Tomato 15. Sweet potato
We know that this is not easy, but begin now and do your best. The toxic load in our body is
responsible for the failure of many of our systems. Blood vessel disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer,
Alzheimers, etc. are all related to too much toxic material in our body.

Recently the Michigan Court of Appeals considered wheth-
er the sisters of a deceased woman, one Ellen S. Mullin of
Kalamazoo, could have Ellens death-bedside wedding to
Rene Marco Duenas annulled after she died. The sisters
claimed that Ellen was not competent at the time of the
marriage.
The sisters. Connie and Jeannie were the court-appointed
co-personal representatives of Ellens Estate what Ellen
owned at her death. Ellens Estate must have been of sig-
nicant size because as soon as they learned that Ellen had
gotten married just a week or so before she died, Connie
and Jeannie petitioned to have the marriage annulled. A
successful annulment would mean that Connie and Jean-
nie, not Rene Duenas, would inherit Ellens Estate. But
the trial court dismissed and the Appeals Court upheld the
dismissal.
Cancer struck. In April 2008, Ellen Mullin, age 50, was
diagnosed with cancer. Following unsuccessful chemo-
therapy treatment, Ellen was admitted to Bronson Hospital
in October of 2009 with stage-4 cancer. On October 28,
2009, Connie, Ellen, and their mother met with a physi-
cian to discuss a transfer to hospice care. Connie spent that
night and much of October 29 at the hospital with Ellen.
Later, at trial, Connie thought Ellen had been in and out of
it a lot and pretty sedated and having hallucinations
that night.
Ellen married the love of her life. But shortly after Con-
nie left on the 29th, and unbeknownst to the family, Rene
Duenas and Ellen Mullin got married, in the hospital. Rene
and Ellen were married by a Reverend. The wedding was
duly witnessed.
Nights later. The next night, October 30, an attorney visited
Ellen so that Ellen could sign a medical directive appoint-
ing her mother as her patient advocate. The attorney at-
tested on the medical directive that the person who signed
appears to be of sound mind and under no duress, fraud, or
undue inuence . . . Ellen died November 8, 2009.
Marriages are presumed valid. The validity of a marriage
is one of the strongest presumptions known to Michigan
law. Marriages are void and prohibited only because of
consanguinity (too close a bloodline) or afnity between
the parties, because either party had a wife or husband liv-
ing at the time of solemnization, or because either party
was not capable in law of contracting at the time of sol-
emnization- meaning a fraudulent marriage. The sisters
asked the court to determine if Ellen was mentally capable
of contracting at the time of solemnization, and if not,
to decide whether Rene had committed fraud by marrying
her.
But rst the Court of Appeals had to decide whether the
sisters had standing - the right to come and ask - to have
Ellens marriage annulled. Does anyone have the right to
have someone elses marriage annulled? If your 18 year
old child foolishly gets drunk one night and ends up mar-
ried in Vegas, do you have standing to ask the court to an-
nul his marriage? The law states To avoid a contract it
must appear not only that the person was of unsound mind
or insane when it was made, but that the unsoundness or
insanity was of such a character that the person had no rea-
sonable perception of the nature or terms of the contract.
And only if that is so, then someone else (the best friend
of that person) can petition for annulment for him.
Ellen was insanely in love. The facts were, Ellen was not
insane, just insanely in love. Ellen had had a longstanding
romantic relationship with Rene (since 1996), had cohab-
ited with him, had moved to Arizona to live with him in
2003. She had cheated on him but in 2007 they reconciled.
He moved to Michigan. Rene and Ellen bought a house
together. At the time she was admitted to the hospital, El-
len and Rene lived together. And for her love of him, she
married him at her hospital bedside, which gave him her
half of their house, and her half of whatever else they co-
owned, and the right to inherit everything else she had. The
nurses had made entries in their logs later that night, stating
that Ellen was oriented to time and place. Even the Doctor
testied hed witnessed a sane Ellen signing her medical
directive a day later. Connies recollections would not be
enough to prove that Ellen was incompetent to marry.
No standing. But in the end, none of that mattered. As
early as 1931 the Courts held that [a]n action to annul a
marriage on the ground of fraud can only be brought by
the defrauded spouse while both parties to the marriage are
living; it cannot be annulled at the suit of the heirs of the
spouse imposed upon, or (by) other third persons. See the
case of White versus Williams, a Mississippi case, 1931.
The case was dismissed because only Ellen, were she alive,
could sue for annulment for fraud. Connie and Jeannie had
no standing to ask. So your son, who loves his 26 year old
wife, stays married. What happens in Vegas doesnt stay
just there after all.
