Onekama prinicipal Gina Hagen shares a laugh with an elementary student.
Hagen said dealing with the children on a daily basis is a very rewarding part
of her job.
Manistee K-12 principals
face elementary to high
school challenges
By KEN GRABOWSKI
AssociAte editor
MANISTEE No one could blame
Manistee County principals Gina Hagen,
Marlen Cordes, Marci Augenstein and Jan
Bigalke if they asked for larger closets in
their offices.
The extra space would come in handy
just to hold all the hats they wear dur-
ing the course of a single day of being
a principal for 13 different grade levels.
Most smaller school districts are moving
away from a principal for the elementary,
middle and high school levels and going to
only one administrator. Its a move caused
primarily by tight budgets.
All four local K-12 principals agree the
Administrators keep
pace with ever-changing
world of education
Interacting with the students in the hallways is a big part of any K-12 principals
job as Marci Augenstein does on a daily basis.

challenges are great, but
they are equally fast to
say the rewards are even
greater. The local school
districts they oversee range
from 250 to 600 students,
but all agree that the chal-
lenges of the job are simi-
lar.
One of the biggest prob-
lems they face is keeping
pace with the changing
state curriculum standards.
There is a huge dif-
ference in what goes on
between kindergarten
and the 12th grade, said
Hagen. I think that when
it comes to academics you
have to be kind a jack-
of-all trades and know a
little about everything. You
would love to know every-
thing, but that is impos-
sible, so you rely heavily
on your staff on what is
best for the students.
Kaleva Norman
Dickson principal Marlen
Cordes agreed. That is
where the teamwork con-
cept comes into play for
K-12 principals, he said.
It is especially true in his
district where he has 600
students under his watch.
There is always a lot
of catch-up to do on the
curriculum for a K-12, but
I have lots of good leaders
in this building, he said.
There is no way any of us
can do this on our own.
The only way it works is
having professionals in the
building that go above and
beyond.
However, as Manistee
Catholic Centrals Jan
Bigalke pointed out, it all
works into a funnel that
usually comes back to a
central focal point at the
principals office.
You really have to be
into what is going on in
terms of the standards that
vary and change over the
years, Bigalke said. Being
able to be that advocate
who the teachers can go to,
and the person that they
use as a sounding board,
creates a lot of challenges
for a principal.
Bear Lakes Marci
Augenstein said having
a good working relation-
ship with the staff is key.
She said listening to staff
and then channeling that
feedback into an educated
decision as a principal is
vital.
I definitely rely on my
teaching staff, and think
of them as experts in the
field, she said. Because I
have a great teaching staff
it helps me do my job from
decoding early literacy
skills right on up to high
school math. It is all part
of being a K-12 educator
it is a challenge, but I
like the challenge.
Hagen smiled at the
question of how the prob-
lems that cross her desk
on a daily basis differ from
the elementary level to
the high school one. It is
something that constantly
leaves K-12 principals in
a mode where they shift
gears on how they deal
with the issues.
It is constant change
from the little things like
a skinned knee at recess,
to a life-changing decision
a child is making on col-
lege, Hagen said. The
one thing you always have
to remember is that what
they are talking with you
about is the most impor-
tant thing in their life at
that moment.
She looks at it as being
capable of changing hats
to fit the situation Bigalke
said, and it was something
that concerned her after
taking over the job at
Manistee Catholic Central.
I was a little appre-
hensive at first about being
a K-12 principal because
my background is in sec-
ondary education, Bigalke
said. I think by being
a mom, a grandma and
teacher it allows me to see
where I put those different
hats on during the day.
When I am disciplin-
ing an elementary student
I put on the mom hat,
and you talk to them like
a mother. With the older
ones you hold them to
higher standards.
Augenstein had a
similar background in sec-
ondary education where
she taught for nine years
before coming to Bear
Lake. It didnt take her
long at all to see that the
rewards greatly exceed the
negative aspects of the job.
Looking back on it
now, I thought I would be
a great assistant principal
at a high school where
there are 3,000 students
or more, but after being
here, I wouldnt change
being a K-12 principal for
anything in the world,
Augenstein said. Some of
those little blessings are I
may be dealing with a seri-
ous discipline issue one
moment, and then I can
go down to the elementary
wing where I am suddenly
a rock star getting all these
hugs from the little ones
because they are so excited
to see me.
Hagen sees it the same
way at Onekama. She said
no matter how bad the day
is going, there is always
something that pulls it all
into perspective on why
she wanted to become an
educator.
You can be having the
worst day on Earth, and
then something will hap-
pen that changes it all,
Hagen said. Even with the
kindergartners you can dis-
cipline them one day, and
the next one they will come
back to give you a hug.
Another thing that
comes into play is a K-12
principal has a much more
personal relationship with
the students and their fam-
ilies. Cordes has spent 21
years in the KND system,
and he is now watching
over children of his former
students.
Understanding some
of the background makes
it nice, Cordes said. If I
have to call their home they
know who I am, and I know
who I am speaking to.
What the position also
does is make them well
known in the community.
The advantage of K-12
is we get to know every
student by name, their sib-
lings, their cousins, aunts,
uncles and parents, said
Augenstein. It has been a
joy to be welcomed by the
community.
However, the one
thing that all four of them
emphatically agreed upon
as the most rewarding part
of their job was to watch
the children progress from
the elementary level on up
to become a proud gradu-
ate. For a K-12 principal
the finished product is
what its all about and
what keeps bringing them
back to take on the chal-
lenges another day.

PDS IS OUR NUMBER ONE CHOICE!
Number One Termite and Pest Control has been advertising in the West
Shore phone book for over 12 years. Over the years we have tried
advertising with other phone books but have found that 60-70% of our
new business nds us in the PDS phone book.
I personally like using the book because its easy to nd what you are
looking for with its two column format. Other books are three and
four columns making the print so small you can hardly read it, but not
the PDS books, they make the print larger and easy for your eyes.
We would recommend PDS Directories to any business for
their yellow page advertising needs. Their sales sta are
friendly, helpful and never pushy.

Life has its ups and
downs and adversity
touches everyone at some
point. But some experts
believe that a focus on
the positive can help you
persevere through tough
times.
For Anita Moorjani for
example, life took a hor-
rific turn when she was
diagnosed with late stage
Hodgkins lymphoma.
Admitted to the hospital
as a terminal patient,
Moorjani slipped into a
deep coma, nearly dying
before she experienced a
spontaneous remission
and recovery. Her case has
since fascinated the medi-
cal community.
While spontaneous
remission of breast cancer
is not uncommon, accord-
ing to a study done by
physician researchers at
Dartmouth Medical School
in 2009, it is rarely seen in
a terminal cancer case.
Her recovery was cer-
tainly remarkable. Based
on what we have learned
about cancer cell behav-
iors, I am unable to attri-
bute her dramatic recovery
to chemotherapy. I specu-
late that something non-
physical switched off the
mutated genes, said Dr.
Peter Ko, an oncologist
with The University of
Southern California, who
has studied Moorjanis
case.
Moorjani attributes
her victory in overcoming
cancer to a belief in posi-
tive things, learning to live
fearlessly, and finally lov-
ing herself.
In her New York
Times bestseller, Dying
to Be Me (Hay House),
Moorjani candidly shares
her story, discussing the
lessons she learned from
her near death experience,
what she would have done
differently and what she
wants people to know now.
Here are some tips
Moorjani feels can help
others face their own tri-
als:
n Prior to her devastat-
ing diagnosis, Moorjanis
life was driven by fear of
illness. Rather than letting
similar fears and stressors
get the better of you, learn
to enjoy yourself and take
care of whats inside.
n Much of our suffer-
ing stems from feeling
less than. Love yourself
unconditionally and be
yourself fearlessly. Remind
those close to you that you
love them just the way
they are.
n Dont obsess over
problems or allow your
days to revolve around
solving them. Its actually
far more productive to
distract yourself and stay
occupied with activities
that stimulate you in posi-
tive, creative ways.
n Thinking posi-
tive can be tiring. Never
suppress negative feel-
ings when they creep in.
Instead of bottling up your
emotions, experience them
naturally. After all, a bad
mood wont last forever.
n Everyday joys can go
a long way toward helping
you cope with stress and
depression. Be it a box of
chocolates, a home cooked
meal or a great bottle of
wine, dont be shy about
indulging yourself in mod-
eration at meal time with
foods that make you hap-
piest.
Whats most impor-
tant for your well-being is
how you feel about your-
self during tough times,
Moorjani says.
You cant always elimi-
nate adversity from your
life. Whether you are
simply experiencing the
stresses of daily life, are
grieving the loss of a loved
one, or struggling with the
ramifications of your own
health crisis, knowing how
to cope is crucial to your
health and can make all
the difference in the world.
Positive thinking can improve your health
