SOURCE ROCK EVALUATION PARAMETERS

1. Total Organic Carbon (Organic Richness)

Sedimentary Rocks Clastic < 0.5 0.50 - 1.00 1.00 - 2.00 2.00 - 4.00 > 4.00 Pure Carbonate TOC (wt.%) < 0.25 0.25 - 0.50 0.50 - 1.00 1.00 - 2.00 > 2.00 Poor Fair Good Very Good Excellent Category

This scale refers to rating of organic richness and not source potential. Type of organic matter at given concentration determines source potential. 2. Rock Eval Pyrolysis Data a. Hydrocarbon Potential * Pyrolysis Yields (S1 + S2) 0 - 2 mg hydrocarbon / gm rock 2 - 5 mg hydrocarbon / gm rock 5 - 10 mg hydrocarbon / gm rock > 10 mg hydrocarbon / gm rock * Category Poor Hydrocarbon Potential Moderate Hydrocarbon Potential Good Hydrocarbon Potential Excellent Hydrocarbon Potential

Pyrolysis yields may not reliable if sample contamination by bitumen, migrated oil, etc.

c. Maturity Transformation ratio or Oil Production Index {S1 / (S1 + S2)} ratio should increase consistently with depth/ maturation. Tmax ( C) < 435 435 - 438 438 - 445 445 - 465 465 - 475 > 475

Top of Oil Window normally taken between 0.5 - 0.6 % Ro, generally Tmax 438 - 440o C 0.55 0.6 % Ro Top of Oil Window. d. Migrated Hydrocarbon High S1 value High OPI ratio Depressed Tmax Compared to nearby samples. Migrated/residual oil or contaminant. Normally accompanied by high S2 due to Heavy C15+ hydrocarbons coming out in S2 peak. e. Tips 1) High TOC values (> 1.5 wt %) accompanied by relatively low S2

values (0.5 - 2.0) and low hydrogen indices, are interpreted as oxidized organic matter probably deposited in high energy environment. 2) High TOC values, no S2 peak values will indicate sample is

thermally very-mature post-mature, could be due to an intrusive (localized heating event) particularly if S2 peaks appear further down the well.
