AMERICAN AIRLINES SYNOPSIS

In 2007 American Airlines suffered two unexpected dilemmas. During flight one of the companys jets crashed after catching on fire. Later during the same year a passenger flight holding 138 people caught fire during its departure and the pilot was forced to do an emergency landing. None of the passengers were hurt but the plane itself was in bad shape. It was later determined that the crash was caused because of faulty repair practices. American Airlines maintenance staff were using the wrong manuals for the engine repair and testing process. This lack of awareness caused the left engine to catch on fire. Over the following years American Airlines was cited and fined for additional incidents all involving problems with the maintenance of their aircrafts. (American Airlines, 2009). It was then requested of American Airlines to do a full inspection of their entire maintenance system to determine why their planes were malfunctioning. The US National Transportation Safety Board then told them to fix the problems they discovered. The accidents began to make others think that if the maintenance workers did not follow the appropriate engine repair guidelines on these planes then they may be practicing other non-compliant behavior. It was also advised that flight crews and pilots also receive extra training on emergency procedures. In total the company could be fined up to as much as $6.9 million for their failure to meet the safety and maintenance codes. Public knowledge of this decreased American Airlines market share. Many consumers became concerned for their safety. (American Air, 2010). American Airlines was able to conduct a major turn-around effort and get itself back on track. The company restructured its maintenance program. The new maintenance system is so state-of-the-art, that American Airlines now offers plane maintenance services to other companies. The company was able to rebuild its image and is now witnessing tremendous

growth. American Airlines has created several goals and it is taking the necessary steps to make those goals a reality. The company has not only improved on its current maintenance program but they have also gone the extra mile to reassure their consumers. The company has upgraded the seating in the cabins, advanced its food and beverage services, and enhanced the online booking service on their web site. The company is also working towards gaining a fully international presence. (Aronovich, 2007).
