A.2.2 Method
Draw a sample of n test pieces from the population, and test the pieces in accordance with the appropriate standard for the property called x. Determine the mean value m{x} and the coefficient of variation v{x}. Estimate the characteristic value xk as: xk = k1 m{x} where k1 = exp{ -(2,645+1/n) v{x} + 0,15} The value of v{x} shall not be taken as less than 0,10. Values of k1 are given in Table A.1.
NOTE The value determined by Equations (A.1) and (A.2) is the highest value the producer may declare as the characteristic value. If the product is subject to a quality control procedure involving testing and evaluation as described in Equation A.3 it may be advisable to declare a lower value to avoid an unreasonable rejection rate.

Annex B (normative) Formaldehyde classes

B.1 General
For the production of glued laminated timber an adhesive containing formaldehyde is used in some cases.
NOTE 1 Glued laminated timber products are known to release little or no formaldehyde. Internal control is only carried out if there are changes in the production with regard to the glue system. However, it remains the responsibility of the manufacturer to ensure compliance with the declared formaldehyde content class.

Where such formaldehyde containing adhesives are used, the subsequent release of formaldehyde shall be assessed by testing according to EN 717-1 or be classified as E2 without testing. The evaluation of emission shall be carried out for each combination of adhesive and wood species. The testing in a chamber shall be carried out with a loading factor of 0,3 m2/m3. A test chamber with a volume of 1 m3 should be used. For such a chamber the following size of a glued laminated member should be used: width x depth x length = 90 mm x 200 mm x 517 mm. (B.1)

The lamination thickness shall be 40 mm. All dimensions shall have a tolerance of 2 mm. The ends of the specimen shall be sealed. According to the results, the product shall be classified into one of two classes: E1 or E2 (see B.3).
NOTE 2 In conventional structures under typical conditions of use, glued laminated timber conforming to formaldehyde emission Class E1 is unlikely to result in an indoor air concentration exceeding 0,1 ppm HCHO. NOTE 3 It is envisaged that the adhesive manufacturer will provide the documentation to the manufacturer of glued laminated timber.

B.2 Initial classification and factory production control

Once initial classification has been obtained by testing, factory production control of the production may be carried out by checking that only adhesives for which an initial classification has been carried out are used. This shall be done by inspecting the received adhesives.

B.3 Requirements for the formaldehyde classes

The maximum values of the steady state emission values for glued laminated timber complying with formaldehyde emission Classes E1 or E2 are given in Table B.1.

C.3.3 Test procedure and climate conditions

The test procedure consists of the following test series: a) short term testing of a control batch BC of 10 specimens in ramp loading. The specimens are tested after 14 days of conditioning in (20 2) C and (65 5) % rh subsequent to gluing; b) long-term testing of 3 batches BD3, BD6, BD12, each with 10 specimens, whereby each batch is subjected to a different duration of load time being 3, 6 and 12 months. All batches are subjected to the same cyclic climate and to the same constant stress level specified below. At the end of each load period, all specimens of the respective batch not having failed are tested for residual tensile strength perpendicular to the glue line in ramp loading. Constant stress equal in all 3 duration of load times shall be 1 N/mm related to the net cross-section of 25 x 50 mm2. Cyclically stepped climate shall vary stepwise with 24 hours step length between two climates (10 2) C and (90 5) % rh, and (35 2) C and (40 5) % rh. The specimens tested for residual strength after removal of the constant long-term load shall be conditioned at least for 2 weeks in climate (20 2) C and (65 5) % rh before ramp loading. The test method has been developed to: 1) 2) predict the shear stress corresponding to a median time to failure of 10 000 h at 50 C and 75 % rh, and to determine that the median time to failure at 80 C exceeds 1 000 h for specimens produced with the tested adhesive.

C.4.1 Specimens
Boards 150 mm wide and 700 mm long with a thickness of 17 mm are bonded face-to-face. Beech (Fagus sylvatica) with a density at (12 1) % moisture content greater than 650 kg/m shall be used. The bond thickness shall be equal to or less than 0,1 mm. The timber shall, prior to the bonding, be conditioned in a climate chamber at (20 2) C and (65 5) % rh so that the moisture content is (12 1) %. The annual ring orientation of the boards shall be at 60 to 90 in relation to the bonded surface. Specimens with a geometry as shown in Figure C.3 are cut from the bonded members. The surfaces "A" and "B" shall be parallel to each other. A scribe mark is made across the glue line for measurement of displacement. The number of specimens required is given in C.3.2. Dimensions in millimetres

NOTE

The width is 25 mm in order to create a test surface of 25 mm x 25 mm area.

Figure C.3 Specimen geometry

C.4.2 Test procedures

Each specimen is placed in a test tube in which load is maintained by means of a spring during the test, see Figure C.4. The spring shall have an outer diameter of 45 mm to 50 mm. It is recommended that the spring is dimensioned to have a compression between 10 mm and 20 mm at the maximum stress level. Prior to application of the load, the tube with the specimen in place shall be stored in the test climate for three hours for the specimen to reach equilibrium temperature. With the specimen in place, the load is applied by means of a universal testing machine on the loading shaft. When the desired load level on the test specimen is reached, the shaft is fixed with the locking nut. The tube is placed in the test climate and time-to-failure is recorded via a micro-switch at the bottom of the tube. The two following tests are carried out:

Measurement of time-to-failure at different shear stress levels in (50 2) C and (75 5) % rh. Specimens are loaded at for instance 8 N/mm, 7 N/mm, 6 N/mm and 5 N/mm shear stress (10 specimens at each level). Measurement of time-to-failure and creep at 3 N/mm in (80 2) C and <10 % rh (10 specimens). A microscope is needed to measure the displacement of a scribe mark across the bond to measure creep.

2)

C.4.3 Evaluation and requirements

The median time-to-failure for each stress level is calculated. For the tests in a climate of (50 2)C and (75 5) % rh, the linear relationship between shear stress and log median time to failure at each load level is determined. Using this relationship the median shear stress at 10 000 h is predicted. The predicted shear stress value shall be equal to or greater than 3 N/mm. For the test in a climate of (80 2)C and < 10 % rh, the median time to failure shall be equal to or greater than 1 000 h. In addition to this, the median creep deformation at 1 000 h shall be 0,05 mm or less.

(C.1)

For each of the five pairs of matched bending specimens, the ratio of the relative creep value kdef(t) of the specimen glued with polyurethane adhesive against the specimen glued with the phenolic resorcinol adhesive

RCi (t) = kdef(t), PU / kdef (t), PRF

i = 1, ..., 5

(C.2)

shall be determined. The loading shall be sustained at least for 26 weeks (i.e. 13 cycles). If the specified relative creep ratio requirement, given below, is not met, the loading shall continue for a second period of 26 weeks.

C.5.4 Requirements
The average ratio of the relative creep values of all five matched bending specimen pairs shall be evaluated for time t = 26 weeks according to:

CR mean (26 weeks ) =

1 5

5 1

(k def (26weeks ), PU / k def (26weeks ),

PRF )

(C.3)

and shall not be larger than 1,12. If the requirement is fulfilled, the test is completed. In case a larger average ratio is obtained, the loading may be continued for a second period of 26 weeks and a second assessment shall be performed after 52 weeks of loading. The average ratio of the relative creep value after 52 weeks, CRmean (52 weeks), shall not be larger than 1,15.

C.6 Application of the adhesive in the production of glued laminated timber

The adhesive manufacturer shall specify how the adhesive shall be used during the production processes. The information provided by the manufacturer shall include: conventional assembly time; conventional pressing time; dynamic viscosity; effect of assembly time on shear strength.

This specification shall be elaborated based on appropriate tests. A set of appropriate tests is defined in Annex D which, if followed, shall be followed normatively. However, other sets of appropriate tests may also be used instead of those given in Annex D.
