The Legend of Earthquake

Long time ago, there was a giant named Ewok. One day as he walked along the mountain ranges, he fell into a deep he called crater. The people in the village wanted to help Ewok to get out if the hole. Ewok: help me1 help me get out of this hole, he called out loudly. The more Ewok roared and shouted asking somebody to help him, the more the earth shook. Ewok shouted, Please help me! Help me get out of this hole. The Villagers pleaded Ewok Please stop shouting. We cant help you, the more you shout, the more the earth tremors. We cant move to help you. The Villagers attempted to help Ewok get out of the crater. They tried to pull out Ewok from the crater, but the rope they used was cut due to his heavy weight. Ewok fell down deep into the hole, Shouting and roaring like thunder. The old folks say that when Ewok shake himself very strongly, there is strong intensity of earthquake. When he is too weak to struggle, there is less intensity of earthquake. If he sleeps for a long time, there is no earthquake.

Thats why the intensity of earthquake is sometimes high according to old folks. Strong causes much destruction.

The Legend of the kabunyan Spring


Long long time ago, Kabunyan, the god of the kalingas came to live with the people. He and his son lived at Upa-upa, a place surrounded with rice fields near Guina-ang. Since he came to live with the people, they had bountiful harvest. Every hunter was blessed with a good catch of wild animals, such as wild pigs, deer, wild ducks and birds. Kabunyan and his son lived like ordinary natives. One day kabunyan told his son, Stay here, Ill go hunting. Please dont stay away for long, I am afraid of being alone, his son answered. When kabunyan left, his son stayed inside their house. Some children from the adjacent place of Bangkagon arrived and invited kabunyans son to play with them. The children place an object few meters away. They were to throw sticks toward it. Whoever hit the center will be the winner. Kabunyans son was always the winner. His playmates become jealous of his talent so they killed him. Kabunyan while approaching their house called out loudly, Come here my son; help me carry the heavy load. I had a good catch today. His son did not show up. This surprised Kabunyan. When he entered their house, he saw his son lying on a pool of blood. Kabunyan was dismayed by the cruelty done to his son. He decided to leave the place. He lifted the cold body and walked to the mountaintop. His sons body was very sticky because of dried blood so he thought of bathing him. He laid the body down and looked around for water. He got his sul-ud and struck the rock in front of him. Cold clear water came flowing out from where he struck his cane. With a broken heart he bathed his son. Kabunyan decided to leave the place and proceeded to Abra to bury his son there. He did not want to stay with the people who killed his son. The abundant source of potable water coming from a big rock at Galdang was named Kabunyan Spring. It is one of the towns beauty spot

The legend of the deep water hole of apatan


Old folks in Kalinga believe that laughing at animals and insects especially dogs, cats, and fishes is not good. If one makes fun or laughs at these animals, the rain would fall in torrents. They call this lib-libo . The caving in of the earth surface fallows this. They called this lusong. One example is the big lake of Bonnong. According to old folks, the lake was once a barrio. In Apatan, a barrio of Pinukpuk, Kalinga, there is a deep water hole. The mouth of the hole is thirty feet in diameter and it so deep that two long bamboo poles joined together could not touch the bottom. The people of Apatan call this hole came to be is an interesting story. Long time ago, two boys went to fish in the Saltan River. They fished from morning till late afternoon. When they felt hungry, they decided to divide their catch before going home. They sat down on the bank of the river and placed their catch between them. One of the boys sorted and divided the fish while the other boy watched. While the boy was watching, he saw one of the fish wriggling and flapping. This must have looked funny to him and he called the attention of his friend. The two boys laughed at the flapping fish. When it stopped wriggling they poked a stick at it and laughed and laughed. This went on for a long time. Suddenly, the sky grew dark, lightning flash and thunder roared. Rain fell in torrents and the ground under them quavered. The boys were frightened. They stood to run but before they could move, the ground under them caved in. The two boys fell into the deep hole. Time has not yet covered the hole.
