Explain O.C.C. of a D.C. shunt generator A separately exited generator gave the following data for o.c.c. at 1000 r.p.m. f in Amps 0 0.2 0.4 0.6 0.8 1.0 1.2 1.4 E g in Volts 5 50 100 140 170 190 200 205 The armature resistance including brushes is 0.5 If the generator is now shunt . connected and is driven at 1100 r.p.m., then, for a total shunt field resistance of 180 (i) Calculate the no load e.m.f. (ii) Calculate the output current and the shunt field current for the terminal voltage of 190V. Explain why Swinburnes test cannot be used to determine the efficiency of D.C. series machines. Explain how a Swinburnes test can be used to predetermine the efficiency of a D.C. machine, when used as (i) a generator and (ii) as a motor. Write a note on constant and variable losses. Derive the e.m.f. equation of a single-phase transformer and draw the no-load phasor diagram. A 40 k VA transformer with ratio of 2000 / 250 V has a primary resistance of 1.15 and a secondary resistance of 0.0155 Calculate (i) full total resistance in terms of . secondary winding, (ii) the total resistance drop on full load, and (iii) the total copper loss on full load. Explain the O.C. and S.C. tests on the transformer and hence explain the evaluation of equivalent circuit from these tests. In a 25 kVA, 2000/200V transformer the iron and copper losses are 350 and 400W respectively. Draw the torque-speed characteristics of a 3-phase induction motor and mark stable and unstable regions. A 3-phase, 4-pole, 60 kW, 50 Hz induction motor connected to rated supply voltage and running without load consumes 3 kW. When prevented from rotating it draws rated current at 30% rated supply and takes a power input of 4 kW assuming that under rated load conditions, the stator and rotor copper losses are equal and that the mechanical losses are 30% of the no-load losses, determine (i) slip, at rated load and (ii) starting torque of the motor with rated applied voltage. Explain the tests to be conducted for determining synchronous impedance. A 100 KVA, 6.6 KV, 3-phase star connected synchronous generator has a synchronous reactance of 25 ohm per phase. It supplies full load current at 0.75 p.f lagging and a rated terminal voltage. Compute the terminal voltage for the same excitation when the generator supplies full load current at 0.8 p.f leading. Explain the role of the damper windings at the time of starting a 3-phase synchronous motor. A 750 kW, 11kV, 3- phase star connected synchronous motor has a synchronous reactance of 35 ohm per phase and negligible armature resistance. Determine the excitation e.m.f. per phase when the motor is operating on full load at 0.6 p.f leading. Its efficiency under this condition is 90%. Why single phase induction motors are not self-starting? Explain the principle of operation of an a.c. servo motor and mention some of its applications.
