Project Title
Modelling of Point and Non-Point sources of pollution in Yamuna river basin using Arc-Swat Prof. A.K. Gosain Dr. Rakesh Khosa

Abstract
Scope of Work:
The project broadly involves the completion of the following activities To study the characteristics of Yamuna river and basins identifying type of soil, Land use, major pollutant and their source. To assess the impact of non-point pollution loading on Yamuna rivers water quality. To assess the impact of urban land use on water quality. Major source of pollution from urban areas comes from point sources second being urban surface runoff. To run the SWAT model for the Yamuna basin using the present day conditions and to validate the model using the results observed from the actual data and finding the efficiency of model. To generate different environmental outcomes using the model to imitate the various possible scenarios that may occur in the Yamuna river basin.

Work Done (CED 411):

Last semester I completed the first three objectives i.e. studied the characteristics of Yamuna river basin system by understanding land use, soil type and crop pattern. Various type of industries present in urban centres like Delhi, Agra, Mathura, Yamunanagar etc. were studied and type of pollutants coming from those industries into the River were analysed. Literature to understand the model I am going to work on and the system were reviewed. SWAT

documentation that lists all the processes that take place behind the computer screen was reviewed to get a better understanding of the whole river basin system.

Work Done in this Semester (CED 412):

Objective for this semester was to run the model, calibrate the model and model validation. It started with the data collection of the fertilizers, pesticides and sewage disposal in the river system. Using the collected data the simulation was carried out for 10 years and the simulated result was compared with the observed data collected from CPCB website. Various assumptions have been made before this preliminary run which will be removed in due course of time. Key assumption is regarding the use of pesticide usage which has been safely assumed and the fertilizer usage is assumed to be constant over the years.

Work to be Done (CED 412):

In due course of time the assumptions made earlier in the project will be removed and the results thus obtained will be compared with the actual observed data and by changing the sensitivity parameters model would be calibrated. After the calibration of the model the simulation is to be carried out over a period of 10-30 years depending on the data availability. Model validation and efficiency of model would be established and to make it more perfect the system characteristics are to be simulated as accurately as possible.
