Submitted by Denise Preston, Library Director at Wilson Memorial Library. Greetings from our library! May has been another busy month so far. The Hunger Games trilogy has been flying off of the shelves since the movie was released and even many adults are enjoying these books. We do have a waiting list even with 2 complete sets of the books, so if you are interested in reading them, give us a call and we will put you on the list. I would like to remind people of an existing policy that we have in place and request your help in another. First, as we all know, it is the season for changing weather here in Iowa (isnt it always?!) mainly in reference to severe weather. Many of you may not know what our Disaster Policy states, so here are the highlights. This policy covers everything from bomb threats, to ice storms, fire, etc., but I would like to bring to your attention the section which would cover severe storms and tornado activity. Tornado 1) At the sound of the siren or as deemed necessary by the library staff all patrons will be directed to the lower level to the old boys bathroom, which is to the south of the furnace room. 2) Adult patrons will not be held in the building against their will, however all patrons under the age of eighteen years will be detained until the threat of dangerous weather passes. 3) A portable radio and flashlight will be taken to the lower level by the library staff. 4) Patrons may leave the building once the staff has determined that weather conditions have cleared. Please be advised that though it is not part of our policy we will do our best to take cell phones with us to the basement so that if necessary the kids can call their parents to let them know where they are. Another thing I would like to mention is that we have been doing a lot of borrowing and receiving of library materials from other libraries. This is a very good thing as it means more people are reading/listening to books. This lending and borrow-

The EV History Center presents... An Evening with Widow Lincoln

Phyllis Scandridge Verhalen, originally from North English and now residing in McLean, Virginia, will be presenting Mrs. Abraham Lincoln to the community at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 1 at the English Valleys History Center at 108 N. Main Street in North English. Called Mother by President Lincoln, Mary Todd, the fourth child of Robert and Eliza Parker Todd, was born in 1818 in Lexington, Kentucky. Mary went to Springfield, Illinois, to visit her sisters in 1840 where she met and married Abraham Lincoln on November 4, 1842. During Lincolns years as an Illinois circuit lawyer, Mary Lincoln was often left alone at home to raise their children and run the household. She also supported her husband politically and socially, especially when Lincoln was elected the 16th president of

ing system is called SILO, which stands for State of Iowa Library Online and one of the big benefits of SILO is that it allows us to borrow books from other libraries which we do not own, but would probably not benefit from owning. We do receive a small amount annually from the State of Iowa for this service, but nowhere near the amount to cover the entire postage amount. What this boils down to is that from this point forward we will have to stand firm on the amount of requesting a set fee for each transaction for adults only. We will not charge children or those doing research for a school project. We do appreciate your understanding in this matter, it will help alleviate some of our postage expenses. We were the fortunate recipients of a generous check from the Keokuk County Endowment Foundation in April. We will be receiving new blinds for all of the upstairs windows (there are none currently), a new magazine rack which will hold more magazines and therefore reduce clutter, and a new color printer which will be more heavy duty and much more efficient to operate. Our Summer Reading Program will begin in June on every Tuesday from 11:00-12:30. This program is free and available to children preschool through 5th grade. This years theme is Dream Big so the sky is the limit as to what we can cover. We have our stories, crafts and snacks all lined up, so we hope you can join us! In addition, we will be offering a program for teens, ages 6th grade through 12th. The theme is Own the Night and we have some great ideas and incentives for those who attend. The dates and times will be announced soon. Lastly, our Memorial Day holiday hours are as follows: Saturday, May 26th - closed Sunday, May 27th - closed Monday, May 28th - closed Until next time be safe and have a great month of May!

Dorothy Jacobs is celebrating her 90th birthday on Thursday, May 31. This wonderful lady touches so many lives with her volunteering services and her Christian love for all. She inspires so many. Help her celebrate with birthday wishes sent to her home, 227 W. Clark St. Sigourney, Iowa 52591.

the United States in 1860. She was by her husbands side in the White House during the Civil War and with him on the night of his assassination at Fords Theatre on April 14, 1865. As a young woman, Mary was as bright and buoyant as she was depressed and dour as a widow. When she died in 1882, at the age of 63, Mary Lincoln was confined to the Springfield, Illinois, residence of her sister Elizabeth Edwards. She was interred within the Lincoln Tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield alongside her husband. The English Valleys History Center is dedicated to preserving our heritage and contributing to our community. Free will donations are accepted, but this program is free of charge to the public.

Allaman chosen as SOS Leader at AIB

Jon Allaman of Keota has been selected as a Student Orientation Staff (SOS) Leader at AIB College of Business. The SOS Leader program is vital to the success of AIB students, said Dr. Susan Cigelman, vice president for academic affairs. For incoming rst-year students, it is a chance to have a mentor who will show them the campus, introduce them to the AIB community and help them make a smooth transition to college. Thanks to the efforts of SOS Leaders like Jon, AIBs freshmen can start the Fall term with condence and focus. The program also gives aspiring SOS Leaders practical and valuable experience theyll be able to apply to future job searches. The

rigorous and competitive selection process starts by screening the students through written applications and group interviews. SOS Leaders are role models for the campus, said Terry Wilson, Vice President for Student Life. Serving in this position helps these students develop crucial leadership and teamwork skills outside the classroom, he said. Allaman is earning Associate in Applied Science degree in Sports and Event Management at AIB. He is a 2011 graduate of Keota High School and the son of Linda Allaman.

Letter To The Editor

Letters To The Editor do not necessarily reflect the view of The Keota Eagle or its staff. Dear Editor: Going to high school prom. Getting a drivers license. Graduating from high school. These important rites of passage for young people mark the progression from adolescence toward adulthood. Underage drinking is also considered by many to be a rite of passage for adolescents. In truth, however, underage drinking is a dead end quite literally. It is associated with the leading causes of death among young people today, including car crashes, unintentional injuries, murder, and suicide. Underage drinking also puts adolescents at risk for developmental delays, academic problems, relationship difculties, and alcohol dependence. This spring and summer, help our kids party rightparty alcohol and substance free. Below are some tips from the Information from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, SAMHSA, National Institutes of Health. For more information please visit www. niaaa.nih.gov. Thanks for helping our kids make smart choices. Sincerely, Lynne Zoulek, KC STAAR Project Director

Family Messages to the Class of 2012

Sean Erwin Dear Sean, Life has its ups and downs and I feel that you are capable of always making the decision that will best benefit you in your future endeavors. As parents we always want what is best for our children and as parents we have always tried to help you make decisions that will make you a better person and always treat others with respect, and I feel we have accomplished that. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you well and put your knowledge and ablities to work for yourself as you move forward with the rest of your life. Gary and Cindy Erwin Brayton Flynn Dear Brayton, I cant believe the time has come for you to graduate. I dont know where the time has gone.We have enjoyed watching you grow through the years. Watching you play sports, dancing, showing your sheep at the fairs. We are very proud of all your accomplishments through the years and know you will have many more. We will miss you so much when you go off this fall to college. Dont forget to come home often to see us,were always here for you. We wish you the very best and will miss you lots. LOVE YOU LOTS! DAD and MOM Allie Horras Dear Allie, We experienced you, our first grandchild at 4 days old. You were, and still are a very special girls to say the least! Special being walking at 8 months, driving a car at 2 years, dragging in every stray cat, driving your first car through a mud road after a two inch rain to get a life. Your life is just beginning and we want only that you be happy and true to yourself. The girl that calls her mom after she has accidently hit a rabbit to ask, What do I do? Mom says, nothing. She then holds, and comforts the rabbit as it dies. This is the girl who deserves much in life. Our love and best wishes, Grandma & Grandpa Horras Brittany Lane To our daughter Brittany, You make us very proud. We know you had to grow up very fast and have had to deal with a lot of tragedy and that this has not been easy on you. We know it has made you the young adult you are today. I know that your mom is looking down from heaven and smiling down on you. Forever always no matter what, I love you, Mommy & Dad Natalie Luers Natalie, The time that seemed so far away 18 years ago has come to pass in the blink of an eye. We are so proud of the young woman we have seen transformed before us. Be confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it! Thank you for the many blessings you bring to our family. Love always, Mom, Dad, Bradley and Bryant Courtney McNurlen Courtney, There is such a thing called the parental curse. It states that according to your actions and behavior, God will get you back, and He will give you a carbon copy of yourself. Well, if thats the case, I dont think I was the sibling that gave my parents gray hairWords cant express how proud I am of the person you have become. Through all, youve shown you have what it takes to make it through anything life may throw your way. Youve used that stubborn streak to your advantage. From an early age, youve always taken a stand and stood up for what you believe in, Im sure you had a good reason for not picking up Grandmas apples! Stubbornness can also be interpreted as courage. Anyway, someday the plan laid out for us will be clear. We all love you, and even though Caleb plans on taking over your room (but leaving it pink in your honor), you can always come back and attempt to reclaim it. Lastly, wherever your path may lead you, I have faith it is the right one. And again, if you are my clone as people say, Im honored. Love you always, Mom, Caleb and Kaden Leah Reed Leah, Wow how the years have gone by so fast! It seems like it wasnt that long ago when we brought our brand new baby girl named Leah home from the hospital, where her big sister Sheila was anxiously waiting. Then three short years later you became a big sister when your little sister Hannah was born. We have enjoyed watching you grow up from a little girl to a beautiful young lady. Through out the years we have watched you go through struggles in school and how very proud we are of how well you have overcome those struggles. You should be very proud of yourself being on the honor roll each quarter through out your senior year. Great job Leah! We know how excited you are to move on with your life and be on your own. As you start your new adventures going off to college, just remember that we will always be there for you whenever you need us. Leah always remember to keep that sweetness that you have about you, that sparkle in you eye and that beautiful smile you have and you will go far. When life gets tough just take a step back, take a deep breath and laugh out loud and you should be able to make it through anything. We are and always will be very proud of you no matter what you do. We are very anxious to see where your life will take you in the future! Good luck in everything you do. Love Always & Forever Dad and Mom (Mark & Robin Reed) (Sheila & Hannah)

Caleb Ahrens Caleb, I think of the years and how quickly they passed. I remember the challenges faced and the victorious way you overcame each one. Mile markers of you growing up come to mind looking at the redfaced, yellow haired, screaming boy and the overwhelming feeling of, Who is this little person? The fitting of your first hearing aid, watching the wonderment on your face as you turned circles in the hall listening to the voices of those who passed; the stomping of your feet as you first heard the sound of your footsteps; the echoing of your voice as you sang louder and louder with the amazement of what you heard. Then the surgeries with all the good and bad of the long trips that went with them. You have overcome hurdles in life that others would never suspect you faced. I watched you strive to walk in the footsteps of those you admired. I remember our long conversations of what makes the depth of a person, discussing the principles that make living life worthwhile, and the unending journey we all walk as we search for Gods will in our lives. Now I look at you Caleb, remembering the glimpses of the past. I feel extreme joy thinking of the man you have become. I am so proud to call you my son. Caleb, as you go forth to carve your future, walk with God. Continue to let Him lead you, as He has done your entire life. He will guide you, and He will not let you down. With joy and deepest love, Mom Stephanie Baker Stephanie, You came into to my life a month earlier then expected. You were so tiny and fragile that I was afraid to have you out of my site. Time went so fast between bringing you home and starting school. I remember that when you were five and ready for kindergarten you stated that Im not going to school with snap up pants but because of you only weighing only twenty pounds it was hard finding clothes that would fit. Through out your grade school years things came along like dance, piano and flute lesson, and so many other interesting activities that you had to try. I was always so proud that you wanted to experience all that Keota had to offer. The things I remember the most was how often you were always trying to get a new pet in the house. I can not recall how many gold fish we went through before you figured out that Mom did not feed them when you were gone to your Dads for the weekend. I can not believe that it has been eighteen years. Im so proud of the woman you have become. I look at you and see such a caring, loving, funny, dedicated, hard working young lady. I know the foundation that you have built will lead you to the goals you have set for yourself. I hope you know how much I love you and how proud Im to say that you are my daughter. I can not wait to see all your hopes and dreams come true. Love you, Mom Haley & Hannah Brenneman Dear Hannah and Haley, It has been so much fun to watch the two of you grow up together as best friends. We will never forget the twin language you had before you could talk to the rest of us. Haleys name sounded like Bob and Hannahs was a grunt of some type. At birth the two of you cried from the moment you were born until the nurses put you in the same crib. Later when we separated your bedrooms it was an adjustment. This coming fall will be the biggest separation yet and it will be a challenge. You are both capable of succeeding on your own and you will always know the other is just a phone call away. With twin girls there has never been a lack of drama around our house and we wouldnt trade it for anything. I cant imagine how boring and quiet it will be. We will all miss you come fall but Cole will probably miss you the most. He will miss the rides to school, having you and your friends around and overall someone to be with. You have made us proud and we will always be there for you in all that you choose to do. Dont let anything hold you back and together we will help you make your dreams come true. Love Always, Mom, Dad and Cole Nick Clark Dear Nickoles , We are so very proud of you. When you came into this world you were very sick and had to fight for the first year of your life . You have always been our smallest child and had to work harder to get your voice heard. Nick you worked hard and you slipped up, but here you stand 18 and graduating from high school. Nick your next step is to go to college . You told us you wish to teach and become a coach . As your parents knowing you, this dream will come true . We sit here so very proud and so full of joy for you . There are no words to tell you how we truely feel or how happy we are that you made it here. The work you have put into your own life so far shows us that you will make it in any and everything you do in life We love you Nick, Mom and Dad Trevor Draisey Dear Trevor, We are extremely proud of all youve accomplished in school -academically and in all of your extra curricular activities. We are going to miss watching you and your friends in music, speech, drama, and athletics next year. Please bring them around for homemade ice cream when you all come home from college for weekends! Good luck at UNI - make friends, have some fun, and study hard. We are always here for you during good times and bad. We love you! Mom & Dad

Kaitlyn Schmitt Dear Kaitlyn, Where do we begin! Who would have thought this day would be here already. It seems just like yesterday you were learning to walk and talk. Look at you now, youre getting ready to walk out our door and into a new chapter of your life. You have become a very independent, confident, and hard working young woman. You have been and continue to be a great role model for your underclassmen. We are so proud of you. Thank you for all the memories. All the sports, arts and drama. You were not always the best at everything you did, but you always did YOUR best, and that is what really mattered. You have reached and conquered many milestones and we are sure your future will be as great. Central College wont know what hit them when you arrive in August. You know we will always be there for you. Money, laundry, food, money, and of course our words of wisdom. Always do your best and keep your head held high. We are only a phone call away. Love, Mom and Dad Brandon Sieren Dear Brandon, Congratulations! We are proud of you! As your time at KHS is quickly coming to an end, we know you are ready to move on to bigger and better things. You will do well at anything that you set your mind to. You have brought so much joy to our lives. We will miss your unique sense of humor; there is only one Brandon, that is for sure! We have some bits of advice for you in the form of Old Farmers Quotes as you head to Iowa State: Life is simpler when you plow around the stump Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you Every path has a few puddles When you wallow with the pigs, expect to get dirty Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin Always drink upstream from the herd Love, Mom, Dad, Bryce, & Brooke Casey Sieren Casey, It is unbelievable how fast the last eighteen years have gone. We are so proud of you and the great examples that you set for everyone. You have worked so hard for all you have accomplished. Thank you for making good choices! We are really going to miss you this fall, especially when Kelsi needs help with homework! LOL:) (We all know parents cant help with homework) Even though it will be a hard transition, (for Mom that is) know that your family is always here for you. We look forward to watching you continue to play basketball. Your talents are endless. Continue to be Amazing!! Good Luck & God Bless. We Love You, Mom, Dad, Brandi & Kelsi Shawna Sieren Dear Shawna, As you are about to come to an important milestone in your life, we want you to know how proud we are of you and your many accomplishments. While it certainly Hasnt been easy at times, you blazed your own trail and became your own shining star. More than your outstanding individual accomplishments, we are very proud of the young lady you have become. Your sense of humor, kind heart, fun-loving personality, and dedication to any task are qualities that we see in you and what makes you special. These qualities will help you enjoy the many rewards in life, as well as endure the disappointments. Remember to surround yourself with positive influences and take time to pursue your passions. Thank you for making us very proud parents and brightening our world. Love, Mom and Dad Rachel White To my sweet Rachel, I cannot begin to tell you the level of happiness you have brought into our life. It seems like only yesterday that we gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. I still remember so many things like, when you started sucking your thumb and wondered if we would ever get you to stop, or when you decided to cut your hair right before your role as flower girl in a wedding. You have now reached a new milestone in your life and we feel you are ready for the next journey-College. Just remember you can achieve anything if you just work hard and never let anyone stand in your way. All of us are very proud of you and no matter which life choices you make, we will always love you and will be there forever. Congratulations & Happy graduation day! Love You Always, Mom, Dad, Cameron, Alyssa Garrett Wright Garrett, Well its 2012, time for you to graduate. You ahve really grown up fast. It doesnt seem that long ago you were learning how to ride a bike. It just seems like yesterday you were behind the plate catching in little league, but here you are all grown up. We are very proud of you and wish you the best in the years to come. Love, Mom & Dad Alix McHugh Congratulations Alix! We are so proud of you and know there is nothing you cant accomplish! the Bears. They were both well below their average with scores of 101 and 105 respectively. That is what you want to have, Kingland said. I just want to see improvement all the time and they have been improving. On Friday, the boys went to Sectionals for what turned out to be their last meet of the season. The Bears played well, but finished 15 strokes away from moving on to Districts. We just didnt have our best day, Kingland said. We didnt shoot bad, but just not well enough to move on. I am so proud of these guys though. They have come along so much this past year. They lowered their score in every meet except for two this year, they just keep getting better and better. Parmenter led EV again, shooting a season low 42 on the front nine and a 43 on the back nine for an 85. Parmenter tied for fifth place in the district as an individual, just one stroke short of moving on to the next round. Finishing one stroke away from making it as an individual is quite an accomplishment, Kingland said. Especially in your second year out for golf. That is just a testament to his ability and his work ethic. He put a lot of time in over the summer and it really paid off for him.

English Valleys Girls Season Ends at Districts

do that, which is exciting. English Valleys had a couple of girls come close to qualifying on time in the meet, but they couldnt quite get over the hump. Allison Hewett cut five seconds off of her season best 1500 meter run with a time of 5:24.64. Unfortunately, she was still about five seconds short of qualifying for state. Her 800 was very good as well, Caster said. She does a good job with that. Hewett ran her open 800 in 2:36.75 and fell about three seconds short of the State qualifying time. Abby Westhoff also had a good day, running a personal best 100 meter dash time of 13.9. She missed the state cutoff by .4 seconds. The Bears also got fourth place finishes out of their 4X400 relay and their 4X800 relay. Although the Bears season is coming to an end, they are happy with the way things went overall this season. As a team, we were a close knit group, Caster said. Everyone was very encouraging to each other. They all definitely worked very hard all year. The highlight of the year was winning the English Valleys meet. I think it was the first time in school history that we won our meet. It was pretty neat to win in front of our home crowd. The Bears are excited to bring back 19 girls next year to see what they can do. I am excited to see how much they can improve, Caster said. Allison will be back and she will be better in the mile because she is going to work hard in the offseason. But English Valleys will have to replace a small but hard working senior class of Desta Rank, Mikayla Morrison and Kelsie Holeton. We will lose three seniors, two of which were out all four year, Caster said. I could count on them to run just about anything. It was nice having Kelsey out for her senior year. She really helped us score some points in her races.

The girls finished sixth out of nine teams at the conference tournament in New Sharon on Thursday. Rylee Voss led the team with a score of 98, finishing 13 individually in the conference. She kind of anchored our team that day, Kingland said. Ella Meyer and Jessica Reigel were the next two finishers for

Trojan Girls Season Ends in Belle Plaine

The Tri-County girls track team headed to Districts in Belle Plaine on Thursday for a chance to qualify for the State Tournament. Although the Trojans didnt get anybody on to the state meet, they ran hard at Districts to close out the season. Sarah Gragg was the top scorer for the Trojans, who scored 20 team points at the meet. Gragg ran a fast 100 time of 13.71 but finished fourth in a fast District and misses the qualifying time by

year on a high note with a 99 and tied for 13 in the conference, DeKleine said. Tri-County will lose two good golfers in seniors Ehret and Jared DeKleine. The girls team will be starting over completely from scratch, but the boys team will be in good shape with some experience returning. We made some huge improvements through the year, DeKleine said. Starting off the year, I had three golfers that didnt know what a tee box was compared to the green. Now we are moving on and I think we can be competitive next year with what we have coming back. It was a good learning season. Nick Watts watches his second shot from the fairway in Sigourney at the SICL conference meet. Photo by Michael Zogg.

.2 seconds. Jackie Moore also ran well in the 800, turning in a time of 2:38.67, ending up five seconds over the state qualifying time. Laura Steinke finished seventh in the 100 meter hurdles with a season best time of 18.57 seconds. The TC distance medley team of Laura Steinke, Megan Striegel, Jackie Moore and Sarah Stiegel were also able to score some team points for TC with an eighth place finish in Belle Plaine.

The Bears traveled to Belle Plaine on Thursday night for the District Meet and a chance to go to the state tournament. The Bears were not quite able to get anybody through to Des Moines, but they ran well as a team and tied for sixth place in the District with 49 points. It was a good meet for us, said head coach Luke Caster. I wish we could have put someone through to State, but it didnt happen this year. It is a young team, so hopefully they will be motivated to work hard next season and work in the offseason. A lot of them have already talked about wanting to

turned in a score of 108 at the SICL meet. Hills 108 on the day was a good meet for the freshman, who has been the only Keota boy golfer at most of the meets this season. To play on the road and shoot in the 50s is pretty good for him, Hill said. That is what we were aiming for. Hill was once again the only Eagle golfer when he went to New London for the Sectional meet. At the meet, Hill shot a little bit higher with a score of 121. The score was not low enough to qualify for the district meet and thus ended Hills freshman campaign. As a freshman, you just hope that they continue to play, have fun and get better, and he does, Hill said. He works at it and he is pretty coachable. The girls went to their District Meet in North English on Monday after this paper went to press. Hill felt like his team had a shot at advancing going in, saying there will be a scrum of four or five teams that all have a chance of advancing to the Regionals. If they place in the top three teams in their district, they advance to Regionals at the Indian Hills Golf and Country Club near Wapello on Monday, May 21.

Jordan Hagedon, Chase Earest, Josh Sterling, Quentin Garrels, Tyson Lamb, Eli Harper, Graham Wittrock, Christian Wittrock, Aaron King, Tyson Lamb and Tim Murray along to run in all the various relays in Des Moines. Eidahl was proud of how well his team ran at the district meet in order to get so many kids to state. We worked on the hurdles every night, we worked on our field events every night, we did the little things that we had to, Eidahl said. One thing I will say about his group of kids is they performed and came through when we had to. We took Sines off of a couple relays and we still won them both. As the Panthers move their focus to the State Meet, they are continuing to try to get better in every event. With so many events competing, they have a chance to win a team title, but Eidahl isnt thinking about that yet. We want to go up there and improve on each event, Eidahl said. We go up there and run our best in every event, we will score points but we are looking to just improve.

320, everybody else was in a close scrum for third place. North Mahaska and Belle Plaine blew away everybody, but there were five teams all within about 15 strokes of each other, said head coach Frosty Streigle. Third through seventh was a pretty good battle in there. We ended up 10 strokes out of third place. The Savages were led by senior Austin Bringman, who shot an 83 on the day and tied for sixth individually in the conference, ultimately finishing seventh on the card back. Bringman was the only golfer from any team other than North Mahaska and Belle Plaine to finish in the top 11 golfers in the conference. He shot decently shooting 41 and 42, Streigle said. He was hoping to finish a little bit higher than that. On Friday, the Savage boys wrapped up their season with a trip to Sectionals. They finished sixth overall with a team score of 397. We were 45 strokes outside of moving on, so we werent really close there, but we did break 400 strokes, which we did not do last year, Streigle said. Bringman again paced the Savages with a score of 88, but fell seven strokes short of advancing on to Districts. Cole Streigle finished 17th individually with a score of 95, Jackson Davis turned in a score of 105, Derek Albert shot a 109 and Colby Kerkove rounded out the scoring with a round of 120. With the boys season drawing to a close, Streigle said he was pleased with the amount of work the boys team had put in this season. Overall, I am pleased with what they have done this year, he said. Several of the kids have shown a lot of improvement over last year and in the grand scheme of things, that is the big deal for me, just to see their growth. The girls competed at districts on Monday, May 14 after this paper went to press.

Gretter Advances to State

Keota Girls Save Best For Last

By Michael Zogg, Regional Sports Editor

The Eagles went into the district meet looking to run their fastest times of the season, and they did just that. Unfortunately for Keota, they were not quite able to qualify anybody for the State Meet in Des Moines. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Kelsi Sieren, Maggie Baker, Madison Sieren and Shawna Sieren came out of the slower heat to finish second with a time of 1:14.61, about 2.5 seconds faster than their previous best time. Unfortunately, the Eagles got narrowly edged out on time, needing to shave two more seconds off to qualify. Kesli Sieren also competed well, finishing third at the District Meet in Wayland. She ended six inches short of the distance needed to qualify for State. Megan Olson finished third in the 200 meter dash for Keota and Lexi Sieren was sixth in the 100 meter dash while they turned in their fastest times of the year.

One of our goals was to bring our times down, and we did that, said head coach Dan Stout. Unfortunately, we didnt get anything to qualify for the state tournament, but we were close in a couple things. Overall, the season was a positive. Everybody got faster as the year went on, that is always a good thing. We need to start hitting it a little bit harder, earlier in the year and getting people where they need to be earlier on from her on out I guess. The Eagles will lose seniors Shawna Sieren and Hannah Brenneman, and they will be hard to replace, but the Eagles return the majority of their team for next year, and Stout thinks that if they are willing to work hard, they could have a good team next year. We pretty much have everybody back except for Hannah and Shawna next year, so if the kids will come in and work hard from the beginning, we will see some improvement and continue to get better, Stout said.

GO! FIGHT! WIN!

The Sigourney girls ran well at the District Meet in Wayland on Thursday; they qualified high jumper, Jerica Gretter for the State Meet. Gretter finished third at the meet, but her jump of 5 was good enough to qualify her for state. She was a little nervous, said head coach Jenny Harter. She knew who she was up against and what their records were coming in. She knew she would have to have a really good day. When she missed and only got 5 she was a little disappointed, because she knew she could get 54. With a third place finish, Gretter had to wait to see if her jump of 5 would be high enough to earn her a trip to state, but when the qualifying names came out, her name was on the list. We found out at 1 p.m. on Friday, Fun Day at Sigourney High School, so we were all outside and we got to announce it to the whole school at the same time she found out so it was kind of exciting, Harter said. Although Gretter didnt quite reach her school record of 54, neither were many of her fellow high jumpers across the state. Gretter is listed as the 15 seeded high jumper at state, but there are 13 high jumpers bunched up between 5-53. Although Gretter is close to a lot of the girls, she is competing against, Gretter is just going to focus on what she can do. She already broke the school record this year, that was one of her goals. Her other goal was to go to State, Harter said. Its going to be her very last time doing the high jump, so she is wanting to get 54 which she knows she can get. I dont think it matters what place she gets, she just wants to get her personal goal of 54 and above. The rest of the meet didnt quite break in the Savages favor. The Savages were hoping they could get a couple more events to State, but poor luck in the hurdles derailed Sigourneys chances. Although nobody is joining Gretter on the field in Des Moines, the Savages were still proud of the way they were able to perform their best in Wayland. I am excited about some of the things that I saw this year for us coming back next year, Harter said. We ended the season on a good note even though we didnt get as many people through to State as we wanted. Nearly everybody ran their best time of the season and that is always what you want to see at the end.

Sigourney Boys Track Falls Just Short of State

The Savages ran well and turned in some of their best times of the season at the District Meet in Wayland on Thursday, but they couldnt win any events and they narrowly missed qualifying for the State Meet on time in a couple of events. We knew going in that it was going to be tough to win any of the events that we were in. It was a pretty tough field, said head coach Jared Jensen. We were hoping to get a couple of events in on time. The Savages shuttle hurdle relay was the closest event to the state tournament for Sigourney. The foursome of Kevin Weber, Derek Albert, Eddie Conrad and Brandon Stuhr ran their fastest time of the season with a 1:03.95 and finished third. Both teams that finished ahead of Sigourney qualified, but the Savages missed the mark by about 0.5 seconds. We knew we ran a good time, there were two good teams ahead of us that helped to pace us, we were just a little bit short there, Jensen said. The Savages were also hoping that they could sneak in their distance medley team of Mark Waechter, Vaclac Bujnoch, Stuhr and Dalton Webster. They finished with a season best time of 3:53.93, but they were 2.5 seconds behind the State quali-

fying time. Alex Shadley also had a good meet, improving his open 800 time almost five seconds to 2:10.89, about three seconds behind the qualifying time. We had a couple events that we were really pushing, not get in, but the kids were already talking about next year, Jensen said. They were getting excited about it. Although the season didnt end quite the way Sigourney had hoped, it has still been a successful season for the Savages. We came out and won three meets this year, Jensen said. For the past 15 years or so they hadnt won a meet. I think that was huge for the kids morale and they were loving every minute of it. Coming in we werent really sure what to expect. We were talking before the season about just trying to make them better athletes and then turned into, we need to make them better track stars. As this season comes to an end, the future looks bright for the Sigourney track team, who will return most of its team next year. We are only losing two people right now that are seniors, Jensen said. If we have everybody back next year, we will have a tremendous squad and we have some eighth graders that are really good athletes and are going to be able to help us out.

Pekin Girls Win Districts and Advance Seven Events to State

By Michael Zogg, Regional Sports Editor

The Panthers had an impressive team showing at Districts in Wayland on Thursday, scoring 141 points and beating second place Highland by 41. Like many of the meets this season, the Pekin girls got a lot of good results from many different events, but they only had two first place finishes to cement their trip to the State Tournament. Celsey Conger was the only individual to finish first, running the 800 in a time of 2:29.23 and qualifying 12th overall for State. Congers teammate Whitney Horras also qualified in the 800, finishing second at Districts with her time of 2:31.65. She is seeded 18 in Des Moines. The Panthers other gold medal event was the 4X800. They ran a blistering 10:07.48 for their best time of the season. They are seeded sixth at State. Although Pekin only had two champions, they advance five more events to State. Brenna Conger is going to State in the 3000 Meter Run, qualifying 18th with a time of 11.42.99. The Distance Medley and their 4x400 team both finished second with times of 4:30.81 and 4:20.22 respectively. Pekin also managed to qualify their 4X200 team despite finishing third at Districts. Our team put in some really hard work, Celsey Conger said. We have worked hard all season for this. I dont know of a track team anywhere that works harder than our girls. We are pushing it hard every day in practice. The girls continue to work hard toward the State tournament, where the Panthers are hoping to score some team points and place. Our goals are the same as every team, we want to go there and place, Conger said. With the teammates going to state I am feeling pretty confident. Conger has to deal with a slight injury sustained during her 800 meter leg of the distance medley. During the break I did something to my IT band the trainer said, Conger said. It started hurting on the turn heading into the last 400, but Ill push through it, because we have state to worry about and we are going to try to push for that state title.

Two Trojans Compete in Five Events at State

By Michael Zogg, Regional Sports Editor

The Trojans couldnt quite get their sprint relays to State, but sprinters Adam Streigle and Spencer Steinke were able to get to Des Moines on their own. Streigle had a great day, not only winning all three of his open events, but qualifying high for the State meet. He is seeded third in the 100, fifth in the 200 and sixth in the 400 after Districts in Belle Plaine. Adam had a solid performance, he has to be excited about how he did, said head coach Keith Kiburz. Taking three out of his four events to State is pretty good. He had a great day and with his times he is ranked pretty high going into state. Streigle has recorded the fastest time in the 100 Meter Dash in 1A this season with a 10.71. He has also run the second fastest 400 at 50.77 seconds and he is counted among the favorites to take the State Title. He is set up great. He is gone on his senior trip now, but he has got a hard enough work ethic to push himself through this week, Kiburz said. It is going to be exciting. Steinke also had a good day; he was not able to win his events, so he had to sweat it out to see if his time and distance were good enough to advance. He was a little bit nervous, but he was able to go on in both those events, Kiburz said. Steinke ran a 23.22 second 200, finishing second to Streigle, but his time was fast

enough to get him seeded tenth at State. In the Long Jump, Steinke jumped 20-06, but he finished third at Districts in Belle Plaine Going to State in the Long Jump and the 200 were his goals coming into the season. I was pretty excited for him when he made it, Kiburz said. While Streigle and Steinke move on to State, Districts marked the end of competition for the rest of the TC boys team. We had an up and down season with some injuries and things, Kiburz said. It was too bad Levi had to have that final injury, pulling up at Districts again. He has worked so hard, but he is still going to be there to represent the team and cheer on Adam and Spencer.

The Eagles had a great day at Districts in Wayland on Thursday, setting many personal best times and sending four events to State. Keota sends seniors Casey Sieren and Trevor Draisey and sophomores Kolton Greiner and Luke Lyle to Drake on Thursday to run the 4X800. The Eagles qualified for state, by dropping 15 seconds off their best time and winning Districts with 8:25.06. Kolton, Luke and Casey all dropped a lot of time for us, Draisey said. That was just a great race for us all around. Keotas finish was the fifth fastest qualifying time in the state this year and the Eagles are expecting a good finish at State. We had one of the hardest workouts we have had on Friday after Districts, said head coach Larry Lyle. They are pretty excited about the opportunity they have up there and they want to do the best they can. Friday, Sieren returns to Des Moines for the preliminary rounds of the 110 hurdles. He won the event in Wayland with a personal best time of 15.43, grabbing the fifth best qualifying time in 1A. I was number one coming into it, but Christian Roth from Waco had about the same time, Sieren said. I knew it was going to be a

good race, so I just came in, got stretched, focused and took care of business. With such a solid qualifying time, Sieren is hoping to bring home some hardware from state, I hope to medal at State. It is my ultimate goal. I just want to get the highest place I can. Draisey is back in Des Moines on Saturday, for the open 800 and 1600 run; he won both at Districts. In the 800, Draisey ran a 2:06.01 at Districts and qualified 14 for state. In the 1600, Draisey qualified 20th in 1A with a 4:47.55. Coming into the mile I had the fastest time, but I didnt want to let that keep me from going hard, so I pushed it for the first couple laps and then just cruised to the end to save a little for the 800, Draisey said. That ended up working pretty well for me because I ended up having enough left in the 800 to win. Draisey is also looking to turn in his best times of the season in Des Moines and earn a medal. I would like to finish towards the top of that second heat, he said. I havent ran great open 800 times this year because I have been so tired after my other events, so I am hoping running it fresh, I will be able to put in a personal best time. That is my goal.

The Bears went to Belle Plaine on Thursday for Districts and came out with 20 team points and a representative at the State Meet in Des Moines. Cameron Heitshusen won the 110 M High Hurdles in a school record time of 15.56 seconds. Going in he was pretty nervous, said head coach Bronson McCulley. It was something he really wanted to do. I just told him to run his race. He worked hard in practice and listened to Coach Matt Snakenburg, who is our expert on hurdles. But he is not going to just be happy with making it to State; now he is going to try to place. Heitshusens time was the seventh fastest qualifying time in 1A. He runs on Friday at Drake as the only representative from English Valleys track. It is a great thing for him, said McCulley. He is representing the school in a positive way, and there are a lot of people excited for him. The Bears worked hard this year, and improved their times throughout the course of the season. Trevor Frazier dropped over a minute from his 1600 meter run time in his first season. Many of the other kids showed a lot of improvement as well, and if McCulley can get the kids back next year, he thinks they can have a good team. I am really looking forward to next year already, he said. I told the a lot of the kids I am proud and happy with their effort this season. There is a lot of learning to do when you are running races.

Pekin Boys Steam Roll Districts, Qualify 13 Events for State

By Michael Zogg, Regional Sports Editor

The Panthers dominated the District Meet in Wayland on Thursday, winning the meet with 199 points. Waco was second with 75 points. Bryce Sines stole the show in Wayland, taking home the gold medal in the High Jump, the Long Jump, the 100 Meter Dash and the 200 Meter Dash. Sines finished as one of the top qualifiers for the state tournament in all four events, with the top time in the open 100 and 200, he is seeded fourth in the Long Jump and fifth in the High Jump. I am hoping to win all four events, Sines said. If I can win all four it would make my life pretty much. Hopefully our team can win. We have a lot of events going. The Panthers had 13 events qualify for the state tournament, including 11 District Champions and two runners up that got in based on their mark. Once again, Pekin swept the field events with Derek Morales winning the Shot Put and sopho-

more Eric Adam coming in second. Adam has spent most of the season on the JV team. We decided to have a throw off at the Cardinal meet on Monday, Eidahl said. We went down there and Eric performed really well. He has been steadily improving and we are excited about his 46 throw and a trip to state. That is going to give him momentum for next year and we will have two good throwers again next year. Bailey Donovan won the discus and qualified 15 overall with a throw of 140-09.5. The Panthers relays were also phenomenal at the meet with the Shuttle Hurdle, the Distance Medley, the 4X200, the 4X100 and the 4X400 relays all won the districts and grabbed an automatic berth into the State Meet. The 4X800 team also got in after finishing second in Wayland, but their time of 8:30.16 was good enough to qualify 11 overall in 1A. Pekin is sending Cory Loyd,

The English Valleys golf team had a busy week with the boys traveling to Sigourney for the South Iowa Cedar League Meet, the girls went to their SICL Meet on Thursday, May 10 and the boys were back in action for Sectionals on Friday. The boys played well on Monday, shooting 373 and tying Iowa Valley for third place in the conference behind Belle Plaine and North Mahaska, who left everybody else in the dust. We were very pleased with our performance at the conference tournament, said head coach Jeff Kingland. Finishing third was quite an achievement for our team this year. We beat three teams that had beaten us previously in duel meets this year. The guys were really proud of themselves. I was proud of them to and the way they came through. Senior Lincoln Parmenter led the way for English Valleys with a 44 on the front nine, and he tied a season low on the back nine with a 43 for 87 overall, tying him for 12 individually in the conference. Fellow senior Tanner Marble

The Keota golf team had the South Iowa Cedar League conference tournament last week. The girls came away with score of 405 and a fifth place finish. Grant Hill was the only boy at the meet and he shot a 108 for the day. The girls goal for every meet this season has been to score around 200 for nine hole and they have been remarkably consistent at hitting that mark. On Thursday (5/10) in North Mahaska, the girls once again shot around 200 twice, with their score of 405. That has been what our goal has been all year, said head coach Rod Hill. I am pretty proud of those kids for the way they have played all season. Emily Adam led the way for the Eagles, shooting a 43 and 46 for a total of 89 strokes and a seventh place individual finish in the conference standings. Emily Adam had an outstanding day with an 89 and finished seventh, so she got a medal, Hill said. Courtney Jaeger was next, shooting a 103, Kaitlyn Schmitt shot 105 and Addie Sieren

Both the Sigourney boys and girls participated in a South Iowa Cedar League conference meet last week, and the boys had their Sectionals on Friday, May 12 to wrap up their season. The girls traveled to North Mahaska on Thursday for the conference meet, finishing with a score of 487 and a ninth place finish in the SICL tourney. The Savages were a little bit short handed, as their nine girl team whittled its way down to four on Thursday due to girls leaving the team and various conflicts. Although Sigourney was a little bit short on golfers, they still had enough to turn in a team score. Mallory Richardson shot the low round for the Savages with a 106 over 18 holes. Kelsey Dyson was a close second, shooting 107 in New Sharon. Morgan Wilson shot 128 and Anja Ristanovic rounded out the team score with a 146. The boys finished in the middle of the pack at the boys SICL Meet, coming in fifth with a score of 383. North Mahaska won the meet with score of 317 and Belle Plaine was a close second with

The Tri-County boys golf team was not in a good mood after the South Iowa Cedar League Meet in Sigourney on Monday. They finished last with a score of 417 on their home course. That was a long day for us, said head coach Jared DeKleine. For some reason, it was our home course and we couldnt hit the ball straight. I dont know exactly what was going on, they werent happy with themselves but we moved on and competed well in Sectionals. At the Sectional Meet, the Trojans shot a 422 with a low score of 95 from Justin DeKleine with a 46 and a 49 in Belle Plaine on Friday. Nick Watts chipped in with a 102, Tyler Lally shot a 108 and Adam Gregg shot a 117 for the Trojans. Ashley Ehret cut her season short, opting to end after the conference meet on Thursday, skipping the District Meet to go on the senior class trip to St. Louis. At the SICL meet in North Mahaska. She knew it was her last event of her high school career, so she was kind of sad, but she pulled through and ended her
