Dear Readers: I am pleased to welcome you to the first Solon Connection Magazine. We encourage you to "Shop Solon" by patronizing the businesses whose support made this publication possible. Solon is a great community with outstanding businesses, schools, city government and residents. I encourage you to take advantage of all Solon has to offer. The title of this publication is particularly appropriate because in 2012 this is what the Solon Chamber is all about - connecting people. We want to connect our members to each other and to the Solon business and residential community. To accomplish this goal we have many special events in 2012 including our Taste of Solon held in March, the 3Chamber Business to Business Show in May, our Annual Golf Outing in September and a fantastic trip to Tuscany, Italy in November. In the months between our members build relationships through monthly luncheons, seminars and committee meetings. We encourage you to become involved in the Solon Chamber. It is a fantastic, friendly and very active organization that I'm proud to be associated with. Jim Kelvington Chairman of the Board, 2012 Solon Chamber of Commerce

Pictured in his expansive showroom on Kruse Drive in Solon, Jeffrey S. Davis has coupled a lifelong love of cars with a keen business sense. Photos by Itamar Gat
By SUE REID When it comes to matching ones passion to a career, luxury automobile dealer and developer Jeffrey S. Davis has found the perfect fit. So much so that he has taken a lifelong love of cars and built a legacy. Davis Automotive Group, located on Kruse Drive in Solon, is one of the citys staple enterprises, a crown jewel visible from the Route 422 freeway and drawing customers from throughout the region. Mr. Davis, who serves as president and chief executive officer, offers a lifestyle experience to car lovers seeking such brands as BMW, Land Rover, Range Rover, Jaguar and, more recently, Mazerati. Ive always loved cars, he said with a smile. He took his first leap of faith into the car market in the early 1990s, he recalled, purchasing an institution of sorts Jaguar Cleveland in Cleveland Heights. At that time, Jaguar was the hot car, he said. BMW, Volvo and Range Rover, not so hot. In fact, those brands were doing terrible, Mr. Davis said. A recession and the emergence of Lexus into the luxury-car segment were reasons for those brands declining sales, he said. In the mid-1990s, things began to improve. BMW put pressure on him to relocate the business, Mr. Davis said, and he began looking. Solon was the logical choice, as his late father, Larry Davis, was not only a key landholder but was considered one of the founding fathers of Solons industrial community.
10 The Solon Connection 2012-2013
Mr. Davis said he and his father bought an 18-acre site that would ultimately become home for the Davis Automotive Group. It was zoned for offices with the vision that it became zoned retail, he explained. Following a failed initiative petition for a new zoning category for the area, Davis Development Group eventually reached an agreement with the city. With the citys support, the issue went back on the ballot, and eight of the acres were court ordered for use by Davis Automotive Group. It became one of the first corporate I-D facilities in the country, Mr. Davis said. When we picked this location, we chose it based on visibility from the freeway and the access it would provide our customers. About the same time that the business moved to Solon, BMW purchased Rover cars, which included Range Rover and Land Rover. Those brands moved to the Davis site in 1997. At that time, the dealership was selling 300 new BMWs a year, Mr. Davis said. Today, that number has climbed to 700, with an additional 500 pre-owned BMWs being sold. The dealership saw its first addition in 1999 for a pre-owned showroom. Davis Automotive Group was on the forefront with that addition, being one of the first dealers in the country to make that move, Mr. Davis noted. I viewed that as almost another franchise. Additions that followed included the Jaguar service area and, in 1998, the Rover building. Sales in that area were slow until 2003, Mr. Davis said. Then, BMW sold
Rover to Ford. Range Rover emerged, and the whole brand turned around, he said. The rest, as they say, is history. Success continued for the dealership, and, at the end of 2011, Davis Automotive Group saw yet another expansion. That included the addition of a parts boutique for accessories and lifestyle items, a delivery area, a new service reception area and office additions. Mr. Davis said the ongoing goal of his dealership is to continue to provide a good customer experience. That means treating people fairly and honestly, words his father lived by, he said. I think my father would be pleased, Mr. Davis said of how he grew his business. His father died in 1999. We carried on his philosophy, which is doing things with integrity, he said of the Davis Automotive Group and Davis Development. My father used to say, If you cant shake someones hand and look them in the eye, a contract wont help you. I find that to be exceedingly true, Mr. Davis said. Although Davis Development Group sold its entire portfolio in 1982, the company still has significant holdings throughout Solon, including the entire Enterprise Parkway area, which it developed, a 50,000square-foot building on Bainbridge Road and two buildings at the corner of Carter Street and Cochran Road, totalling 112,000 square feet. It also has a 100,000-square-foot building on Davis Industrial Parkway, as well as its office there. Davis Development Group owns the for-
mer Cleveland State University Building in Solon, the site of Akron Childrens Hospital satellite and the area where Caribou Coffee and Donatos Pizza is located on Kruse Drive. It also owns nine acres near the Mustard Seed Market and several parcels in the industrial area, ranging from two to 11 acres. Mr. Davis, an only child, said he feels fortunate to have had as many years with his father as he did. He was really very special, he said. The two share the same birthday. He recalled his fathers patience with him as a young child and his ultimate support in getting into the automobile business. He discouraged me at first, Mr. Davis said. It was a very interesting time for those brands. People kept saying, Why do you want to leave the real estate business? His father wanted his only son to be in business with him, Mr. Davis said. When he couldnt discourage me, he asked, How can I help you? he said. He realized my passion and my need to do something on my own. My father always said, The one thing you have in this world is your name. Dont screw it up. Its OK to make mistakes, because its the only way you learn, but dont make the same mistake twice and dont make it expensive! What Mr. Davis carries forward in his business dealings that are identical to his

fathers practices include being conservative on debt, matching obligations with your investment strategy, he said. Its worked, Mr. Davis said. Weve balanced out our properties so we dont have a great deal of exposure. Its good and bad, but its worked, he said. We are in business when many people arent. As far as doing business in Solon, he said, Theres the bumper sticker that says, Industry loves Solon and vice versa. It was a terrific community and still is, he said. This is where we started our development business, and we are most comfortable here, Mr. Davis said. Weve seen a lot of changes in the community over the years from when my dad came here with his headboard company in the mid 1960s.
At that time, there was no freeway. When it was put in, it fostered a tremendous amount of growth, he said. The political climate has also changed over the years, Mr. Davis said. Theres always that give and take between the businesses and the residents. All in all, Solons leaders, past and present, try to do a good job balancing growth and the needs of the community, Mr. Davis said. We are all here to do the same thing, he said. My dads attitude was, If its good for the city, it will be good for me. Looking at the future, Mr. Davis said, he wants to continue in business. Trends come and go, he said, and its important to position yourself financially to take advantage of the next cycle. In addition to businesses, he is on the foundation board of Montefiore, as well as on the board of the Jewish Community Federation. This past year, he was dealer council chairman for Jaguar. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family. A favorite hobby includes boating with his wife and two grown children. At 62, retirement does not play a part in his immediate future, Mr. Davis said. When you own your own business, you never really retire, he said with a laugh.

By SUE REID Since 2003, the Solon Community Center has been offering a variety of options in the area of health and fitness to those who live or work in the city. With the ongoing goal of providing and maximizing the recreational and leisure needs of the area, the community center offers programs that enhance the communitys quality of life. Consisting of two floors in the 84,000-square-foot building on Portz Parkway, the Solon Community Centers main amenities include a 12,000-square-foot gymnasium, 17,000-square-foot indoor and outdoor pools, 7,500-squarefoot fitness area and a nearly 4,000-square-foot banquet area. There also are concession stands indoors and out, as well as child care. This center was built for the residents, Solon Recreation Director Donald W. Holub said.
Although it was built in 2003, the concept for its creation began back in 1985, he said. The center cost about $19 million to construct and is operated on a fee-based system open to residents of Solon, as well as people who work in the community. About 10,000 members use the community center, representing about 40 percent of the citys population. Open to all ages, the center has evolved, Mr. Holub said. We always try to figure out ways to change with the times. One such offering that came about from needs expressed in the community is the popular afterschool program. In existence for the past three years, it is one of the biggest programs offered at the center, Mr. Holub said. Registration begins in July, and the program typically sells out within the first two weeks, he said. Held four days a week, the after-school program includes 10
different activities, kickball, golf and tennis among them, which are available for Solon children in first through fourth grades. Mr. Holub said the idea for an afterschool program came about when parents approached him looking for things for their children to do physically. School buses drop an average of 40 students per day at the center, beginning at 2:45 p.m. Parents can then pick up their children anytime until 6 p.m. This is also great for the stay-at-home mom who wants to bring a student for a class, Mr. Holub said. He said the Solon Center for the Arts has a similar offering. In other areas of the community center, regulars start their day at 5:30 a.m., Mr. Holub said. Whether they are taking a dip in the pool or working out in the weight room, everyone has specific areas that they gravitate toward, he said. Another popular offering at the center is its swimming lessons, Mr. Holub noted. It used to be we were only able to offer it in the summer, but now it is offered year round. Lessons are offered to all ages, with the majority of participants second-graders and younger. Assistant Director Russell Schneider said water fitness classes are offered seven days a week at the center. Two lap lanes are kept open during any classes, he said. The gymnasium in the community center is open for members to shoot hoops and is the site for a number of ongoing programs. Basketball clinics, open gym for adults and volleyball leagues are some of the activities there. It can even accommodate a tennis game. Youngsters use it as an open play area, complete with tumbling please turn to page 14

equipment. The centers fitness room is staffed at all times, so members can get any questions answered about the equipment, Mr. Holub said. Personal trainers are available at an extra cost. There are 13 trainers to choose from. The fitness room also boasts Nautilus circuits for circuit training, elipticals, treadmills and steppers. For an extra fee, group fitness classes such as spinning, Zumba and yoga are offered. For walkers and joggers, an indoor track is available, as well as jogging trails around the outside of the building. As if these amenities are not enough, the community center has banquet and meeting rooms, along with a full-service kitchen to accommodate catering services. Space is booked regularly for such events as holiday and birthday parties or business meetings. The entire banquet hall can accommodate a party with up to 250 guests, while the individual meeting rooms can hold up to 80 guests. Another advantage is the Solon Community Park next door, off of SOM Center Road (Route 91). There, playground equipment and 10 multipurpose fields are located. A sand volleyball court, tennis courts, basketball courts, skate park and community garden round out the amenities. Other Solon parks include Woodall Park, Portage Playground and Timberlake Park, all part of the citys recreation department. A commitment to the health and fitness
from page 13
of the community also is evident through Healthy Solon, an initiative of the Cleveland Clinic and the city of Solon, which brings various programs stressing fitness to the community. The Healthy Solon run held annually and a community health fair in the spring are some of the highlights. Looking at the future of the Solon Community Center, Mr. Holub said, there is room left to expand. Areas identified by residents have been the gym, pool area and free weight room, he said. We are always willing to try anything in terms of programming, Mr. Schneider said. We listen to the community.

series enabled the arts center to expose the community to such areas as opera and orchestra. This project, in addition to SCAs core business of arts education, will bring added value through quality performances promoting public access and encouraging the breadth of arts programming in Solon, Ms. Prasser said. For 2012, the Signature Series will encompass many connections, she said, fill a critical need and bring joy and excitement to all who participate. It will begin this June with Phil Dirt and Dozers, a premiere rock n roll band celebrating the music of the Beach Boys, together with the Solon Philharmonic Orchestra presenting a family concert celebrating the centers 10th anniversary. La Traviata Giuseppe Verdi, in partnership with Kent State Universitys Hugh A. Glauser School of Music opera workshop, will be held in September, and the Solon Philharmonic Orchestras fifth anniversary premiere, featuring soprano Kelly Cae Hogan, of the Metropolitan Opera, will take place in November. The three grants awarded to the Solon Center for the Arts from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture total about $100,000. In addition to the series, the arts center boasts a Spotlight Youth Theater, where children begin in the first grade and essentially grow up through our programming, Ms. Prasser said. Those students go on to Solon High School and then return to mentor young performers at the arts center, she said. It becomes this really cool revolving door. On an annual basis, the arts center boasts over 3,000 registrations for a variety of classes it offers. They include such things as basic drawing, cartooning, animation, playwriting and Zumba, to name a few. The classes are taught by a group of nearly 50 instructors. Participants range from children to the elderly, Ms. Prasser noted. For the dance program, one of the important aspects is that it is more about teaching the love of the art form than about competition, she said. Six back-to-back recitals are held annually, and dance instruc-

tor Heather Koniz believes in hard work offered in a nurturing environment, Ms. Prasser said. The kids follow her around like the Pied Piper, she said with a laugh. Students begin as young as 4 years old, with some dancers in their 80s. Dancing rounds out the many offerings at the center, completing the full package offered to residents in Solon and surrounding areas. For Solon to have arts as a department is a clear statement that that piece is important to community life, Ms. Prasser said. Solons art community was also recognized by Money Magazine, which rated Solon as one of the nations top suburbs last year. Ms. Prasser said the arts centers philharmonic orchestra being listed as one of the amenities of the community, alongside bustling industry and top-rated schools and health care, was truly a crowning moment. The art center rounds out the complete package for what makes community life here truly remarkable, she said.

out from the inside out. But, in the end, it saved my life for now, he said. Although he is cancer free, Mr. Becker said, the long-term side effects of the chemotherapy that he was told would most likely occur are. I have so many things that will probably happen, he said. An example is that he has pulmonary fibrosis, which is scar tissue on his lungs. A common cold worsens quickly and can turn into pneumonia as a result. My lungs are not so hot, he said. He also has a high risk of developing other types of cancer, he said. I dont know how long my life will be. As a result, Mr. Becker lives his life to the absolute fullest. In fact, he recalled that, after leaving the hospital after eight months to resume is daily life, he vowed to have fun no matter what. He also vowed to resurrect the small startup business that had to be put on hold, Direct Opinions. He did just that with one of the first customer-service telemarketing firms, which now conducts more than 2 million calls per year nationwide. Rewind before the diagnosis, and the John Carroll University graduate was the No. 1 salesperson in a national sales force of 11,000 for Xerox Corp. He went on to sell Direct Opinions in 1990 to devote more time to other passions, which include presenting lectures and seminars worldwide to a variety of organizations, such as IBM, American Greetings, Bank One and Keycorp. I was trained to be a trainer, he said matter-of-factly. Another passion was writing. Mr. Becker is the first to admit that his initial go at it almost didnt make it off the shelf. I was rejected by 34 publishers, he said with a laugh. The organized entrepreneur even kept every letter. These were some of the nastiest letters Ive ever read, he said. All I wanted to do was sell books and donate the proceeds to cancer. A small publishing house finally took notice, and Mr. Beckers first book, Can I Have Five Minutes of Your Time? became a national bestseller. Thats when he started making mistakes in life, he said. He wrote more books that didnt receive as much acclaim and started trying to do too many things at once, he said. What he was good at rather, great at was sales and sales training, so he committed to writing and speaking about that. 1998, was received positively. Others, not so much. Mr. Becker continued conducting seminars worldwide while writing. My job is either to go into companies and train all of their salespeople or reorganization of sales, he said. For his first paid seminar, he recalled receiving $50. Not surprising considering his strong work ethic, Mr. Becker has never missed a seminar in 26 years. Ive hitchhiked, driven all night and rode corporate jets to get to a seminar on time. He has since slowed down his number of speaking engagements, and, despite all of his successes, he said he doesnt take himself too seriously. I take what I do seriously, but not myself, he said. He continues to give of his time and talents throughout the Greater Cleveland and Solon communities, setting the goal of sitting on four nonprofit boards a year. They have included the Better Business Bureau, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the March of Dimes, to name a few. He prides himself on his common sense, and the happily married father of one knows how to laugh mainly at himself. He said he and his wife, Hollys, arguments almost always end in laughter. As a young girl, his daughter taught him the valuable lesson of never holding a grudge, he said. Mr. Beckers hobbies include being the proud owner of a powered parachute, which allows him to do aerial photography. Music is his other great love, and he plays drums as a member of the band Flashback. A bucket list still remains. That includes skiing out West just once, he said and taking his wife to Australia and New Zealand. Though he met one of his biggest goals in life to meet his best friend that would become his wife Mr. Becker said he regrets not having more children. Ive never held an infant, and Ive never cooked, he said. Those who know him may not realize one other thing. Hes shy and not good at small talk, he said. Im uncomfortable talking to people I dont know, Mr. Becker said. He doesnt like to talk nonsense, and, unless he has had a substantial conversation with you, he wont remember your name. The lucky ones call him friend. Im having the time of my life having fun, Mr. Becker said. I just have common sense, and I love life.

Tuscany, Italy, is the destination for this Novembers Solon Chamber of Commerce nine-day excursion. Reservation deadline for this trip, which includes full-day guided tours, is July 20.
By SUE REID For the second year in a row, the Solon Chamber of Commerce is offering a trip of a lifetime. This year, an escape to Tuscany, Italy, is the destination. The nine-day trip from Nov. 1 to 9 is open to chamber members or nonmembers, said Nancy Traum, president and chief executive officer of the chamber. The chamber has partnered with Action Travel in Solon, experts in the travel field, for this adventure, which takes travelers through the beautiful landscapes of Tuscany. The area, known as the true birthplace of Italian Renaissance and for its extraordinary countryside, will be explored as part of the experience. The total cost for the nine-day excursion, including airfare, is $2,679. All baggage is handled by ABC Destinations, and the cost includes an amount for fuel charges and taxes. One of the best benefits of the trip is
that you stay at one hotel throughout your stay, Ms. Traum said. From our home base in beautiful Montecatini, we were within an easy bus ride of all the destinations that make Tuscany such an unbelievable experience. Ms. Traum, who visited Tuscany at the same time last year to preview the trip, said the weather is still nice and the number of tourists is down, making it easy to see the sights. It is also olive harvest season, she noted. Some of the features of the trip include full-day guided tours of Florence, Siena and San Gimignano, where fine art and the extraordinary countryside will be some of the highlights. An experienced, professional manager will assist travelers upon arrival in Italy, and the trip will be escorted by a representative from the Solon Chamber of Commerce. Optional tours are available at an additional cost. An additional two-night optional excursion is also available to Rome. The trip includes popular destinations
while letting you select the optional tours that interest you the most, Ms. Traum said. If you decide not to take an optional tour, there are many things to keep you occupied in Montecatini, plus the train station is a short walk away, making it easy to explore on your own. Last year, 36 travelers took the chambers trip to China. During last years trip, people got to know one another and left as friends, Ms. Traum said. When previewing the Tuscany trip, she traveled along with a smaller chamber of commerce out of Kansas, she said. During that trip, small groups of two or four gathered together, she said, and by the fourth day, they grew to 20 people. I realized that these people were building relationships, and thats what the chamber does, she said. The reservation deadline is July 20. For more information or to make a reservation, call Arlene Goldberg at Action Travel Center, 440-248-4949.

Over 40 yoga classes are offered weekly at Oasis Yoga and Spa on Station Street in Solon.

By SUE REID Solon resident Janice Hanrahan remembers her A-ha! moment when she discovered the deeper side of yoga. She continues to create that moment for her clients on a daily basis at Oasis Yoga and Spa. And she does it with a serene environment the moment one enters the full-service yoga studio and spa on Station Street in Solon. A former gymnast and personal trainer, Ms. Hanrahan was no stranger to the phys-
ical side of exercise, and that is where her frame of mind was when she began dabbling in the practice of yoga, she said. She soon came to discover that the feeling afterward, her spirituality, was an even greater reward. Yoga is a blend of not just physical but the need to feel something deeper, she said. I view this as a lifestyle, not just an exercise program. That mantra has become the basis for Oasis Yoga and Spa, which opened last spring. Ms. Hanrahan helps clients see the

whole picture when it comes to yoga, she said. I strive for everyone who walks in the door to have a good experience. She prides herself on having top instructors, which number 15, who share her passion and philosophy. Ive taught everywhere, Ms. Hanrahan said, and have found that many instructors focus too much on the physical aspects of yoga and not the whole picture. She chose the Oasis instructors based on those who embody the full spectrum of yoga, she said. They, too, treat it as a lifestyle and not a trendy workout, she said. Our instructors work to bring it back to its roots and its essence. At Oasis, a wondrous sense of quiet and calm greets clients the moment they walk in the door. From the sights, smells and soft sounds, an entire peaceful environment has been created. Ms. Hanrahan said she receives tremendous feedback from clients on how Oasis is presented and how the rooms are designed. Oasis evokes a feeling of luxury, without being stuffy. It feels spa like but not uncomfortable, she said. I do receive a ton of compliments on how weve created the space, but, more importantly, about the quality of our teachers, she said. We are not cookie cutter, which is what makes us different, she said. Windows at the studio provide an outer-

inner connection, Ms. Hanrahan said, not to be confused with being on display. Bamboo floors and softly colored walls add to the peaceful ambiance. In addition to all types of yoga offered through more than 40 classes a week, Oasis boasts all types of massage, including Thai massage, an infrared sauna, Reiki and acupuncture. Offering all those services is a way to support people on their healthy lifestyle journey of well-being, she said. We view this as a resource and educational facility so people can live a more balanced, healthy lifestyle, she said. Yoga is one vehicle. Services are offered at all different price points at Oasis, whether its just 30 minutes sitting in the infrared sauna or a full day of spa services for an individual or group. It is the whole idea of recognizing the need to take care of yourself first, Ms. Hanrahan said. Clients at Oasis come from all walks of life and from throughout the area, with some traveling as far as from Canton and the west side of Cleveland for the specific classes that are offered. Its far-reaching because of the specialities that I offer, she said. Ms. Hanrahan, who began teaching more than a decade ago, has studied with a variety of yoga experts, many of whom authored books on the topic. She continues ongoing education and training, traveling all over the country. Her first year in business has been a true growing experience, she said. A mother of two who has lived in Solon for the past decade, she said she chose to locate her studio in the city, because, while she recognized the deep level of commitment parents have for their childrens education and upbringing, she found that something was missing. That was a deep commitment to themselves, she said. Its like the saying, You have to put the oxygen mask on first, she said. We are trying to make this an understanding of a lifestyle, to be more aware, more conscious, she said.

districts mission, which is to do better than the previous year, he said. Parents are satisfied with that goal, said Mr. Regano, who has served as superintendent since 1987. Each childs success becomes a success of the whole. The mission to do better and to do more is embraced by not just the district but the community as a whole, Mr. Regano said. Everyone wants it, he said. The type of teachers we hire are not satisfied just maintaining. The relationship between the schools and the community is extremely important, he noted.
Along with the Solon Board of Education, we try to make the best decision for the city as a whole, not just the schools, Mr. Regano said. We all rise and fall together, he said. It needs to be a win-win relationship. Through the years, the schools have racked up countless accolades and achievements. For example, Solon has been rated as one of the states top five school districts every year by the Ohio Department of Education report-card rankings. ACT has recognized Solon High School for the rising test scores of students with its prestigious Red Quill Award for five con-
secutive years the only Ohio school to achieve this honor, Mr. Regano noted. Both the Solon High School and Solon Middle School Science Olympiad teams won the 2011 national championship, and Solon and Orchard middle schools are Ohio and U.S. Middle Schools to Watch. All seven Solon schools are State Superintendent Schools of Distinction, and 283 Solon students earned AP Scholar awards from the College Board. A record 40 Solon students were recognized by the National Merit Scholar Program in 2011, including 21 semifinalists and 19 commended students, the highest number recognized at one school in the area. There are so many good things that go on here, Mr. Regano said. People move here because of the schools, and we want to make sure of that. The schools cant continue unless they are continually supported, he said. We want lifetime residents here. We also want the best in academics, the arts and athletics, he said. Its a priority within the community. Its also the school boards consistency and level of expectation that drives this district.

Chicago Deli
serves up friendly atmosphere
By SUE REID Tucked in tiny corner of the Solar Center shopping plaza in Solon is one of the communitys biggest gems. A city institution where everyone knows your name and smiles abound, Chicago Deli has been serving up its homemade food in a warm, friendly atmosphere for over 30 years. Owner George Hamway calls it the Cheers of Solon, and the label is no joke. Many dedicated regulars at the restaurant are there bright and early just as the doors open in the morning. Customers shake hands with Mr. Hamway, share a story about their families or talk about the news of the day. Its one big, happy family, he said, where everyone is our friend. It is because of that friendliness that Chicago Deli has remained strong, even when the economy took a dip in recent years, he said. We kept our prices down, and hospitality went up. Prior to the economic downturn, the restaurant experienced a fire in 2001 that closed its doors for nine months to rebuild. Still, lines are out the door on any given day. Even though the shopping center itself is not full, the delis popularity remains strong. We take care of our customers, Mr. Hamway said of the success. They are our family. They come to see us, and we joke around and have a great time. For customers at Chicago Deli, no request is turned away. Special orders dont upset us, Mr. Hamway said with a laugh, referring to the old fast-food restaurant slogan. The food cant be beat, whether its breakfast, lunch or dinner. A traditional American deli, Chicago Deli also has an ethnic flair, specializing in a variety of Mediterranean offerings, such as shish kabob and Jewish staples like matzo-ball soup. There also is stuffed cabbage,

stuffed peppers, baked chicken and popular wraps. Cold-cut sandwiches are all high end, Mr. Hamway said, as well as salads and other favorites. Our deli is very diversified, Mr. Hamway noted. The moniker out front claims, Clevelands Finest Hot Corned Beef Sandwiches. Its that old style that keeps customers coming back. Each Friday, no matter the season, Chicago Deli boasts an all-you-can-eat fish fry. Couple that with homemade pierogis or macaroni and cheese, and its just like mom makes. On Saturday, it features its famous prime rib. Meatloaf is another popular offering. We dont use anything frozen, Mr. Hamway said. Theres no cutting corners. Everything is homemade. nearly 30 years. We retain our staff very well, Mr. Hamway said. We take care of them. They are our family. With a friendly smile, staff greet the variety of customers who come through the door, many from the surrounding business community, as well as families. Chicago Deli opens daily at 7:30 a.m., with extended hours on the weekend. We know people by their first and last name, Mr. Hamway said. Families who have called Chicago Deli home for years, are all like our kids, he said. Our personality makes us different. The restaurant business is second nature to Mr. Hamway. My family is all in the restaurant business, he said. Mr. Hamway, who is Lebanese, resides in Solon with his wife. His four children attended Solon schools, and he has five grandchildren. He said he has seen the population of Solon change and grow over the years, as well as the citys ethnicity. His business has adapted to those changes, adding an extensive catering component to the restaurant, serving such occasions as weddings of 500 people or bat mitzvahs. We do fancy, cheap, whatever the customer may want in terms of price, he said. Deli trays for parties big or small are some of the popular offerings, especially during the holidays. Looking to the future, Mr. Hamway said, he hopes to remodel at some point or move somewhere else within the city. It all depends on the future of the shopping center, he said, specifically plans for its redevelopment. Id like to try to remodel or move within the city to try to bring even more people to the area, because people love to come here, Mr. Hamway said. Weve been a success, he said. Its been our lifestyle. We live according to the restaurant. It is a family atmosphere for everyone who comes here and works here, Mr. Hamway said.
Desserts, corned beef sandwiches and a dedicated staff all contribute to the success and delectible offerings at Chicago Deli.

By SUE REID The sights and sounds of Solon Home Days will fill the air this summer, when the traditional community event takes place for the 14th year July 26 through 29. With the theme of Mardi Gras, Home Days again will be held at Solon Community Park on SOM Center Road (Route 91). Resurrected in 1998 under the leadership of former Mayor Kevin C. Patton, the annual event gives the community an opportunity to gather and have fun, said Russell Schneider, the citys assistant recreation director. Amusement rides, food, music, a parade and fireworks are some of the high-
Home Days
lights of the weekend event. Home Days kicks off traditionally with a pasta dinner on opening night served at the Solon Senior Center. Volunteers and city officials roll up their sleeves to serve more than 300 dinners, and entertainment is provided. Each year, Home Days has a theme. That has been the case for the last six years, and it is a way to tie the whole event together, Mr. Schneider said. In the past few years, they have included western, tropical, Hollywood and 1950s themes, as well as a cruising Solon car theme. Vendors, including city departments, decorate their booths according to the theme, he said, and prizes for the best decorated booth will be awarded. The competition is fierce, yet friendly, and camaraderie abounds. The booth operators also always seem to enjoy it, Mr. Schneider said. They really go all out. The theme also spills over to the Home Days stage, which will be decked out accordingly. Another tradition that began last year and will be carried on is showcasing local youth bands on the main stage. We wanted to give it that local flair, Mr. Schneider said of the reason behind focusing on the local bands. It also drew in more crowds, he said. There were a lot of people for that reason. In addition to the local acts, Solons

Got Talent, similar to the television show Americas Got Talent, continues to be a crowd pleaser. People want to see what kind of party the city throws, E. David Peleg, banquetprogram manager for the Solon Community Center, said of opening night. Everyones done a great job, and we are going full steam ahead. In addition to the themed booths, Home Days features a variety of other entertainment. Last year, the Chinese Cultural Center performed, as well as the Solon Center for the Arts dance camps. The ever-famous Music with the Mayor will be held on Sunday, Mr. Schneider said, which is a contest similar to Name That Tune. Its held on the main stage that evening with the mayor serving as judge. We like to think of it as a community event, not a carnival, Mr. Schneider said. We are trying to stay real local. About 70 vendors are on hand for the weekend, offering a number of carnival foods, such as cotton candy, sausage sandwiches, pizza and snow cones. Staff prepare for the event months ahead of time, solidifying a schedule and preparing various games and activities. It took awhile for Home Days to really take off, Solon Recreation Director Donald W. Holub said. People were skeptical at first, but it really picked up when we
themed it. Anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 people attend Home Days, rain or shine. Weve always tried to make it a local, community event, Mr. Schneider said. It also has been a real outreach for city departments, including police, fire, water reclamation and the arts center, Mr. Holub said. They get to know the community better. The Solon Benevolent Fund conducts the annual Home Days raffle and raises between $15,000 and $20,000, which it disburses to needy individuals and organizations throughout the city. It also awards scholarships annually to high school seniors. Its nice to know the money is coming back to Solon and you are helping fellow residents, Mr. Holub said. Other highlights of Home Days include a hole-in-one contest put on by Grantwood Golf Course, as well as a corn-hole tournament. The Home Days parade will take place Sunday with its usual route, which begins at Arthur Road School and proceeds down Inwood Road. The Solon High School band takes part, as well as city officials and departments. Mayor Susan A. Drucker wants this to be more of a community event, and it has been, Mr. Schneider said. Thats what we continue to strive for.

Many of our customers are researchers, said Robert W. Beattie, vice president of materials management. If they order it today, it has to be in their office tomorrow. He said 50 percent of MP Biomedicals business is overseas. Its products are in the areas of molecular biology, fine chemicals, immunobiologicals, biochemical reagents and diagnostics, to name a few. From basic research, through scaleup, to full-scale production and diagnostic testing, MP Biomedicals ser ves every industry need, from specialized areas of research to supplying large-scale quantities of fine chemicals, according to company officials. They said the company sells its products in every country in the world. Mr. Beattie said, Our customers partner with us, because they want a longtime player and reliable colleague in the fields of life-science research and diagnostics. The company was founded by Milan Panic, who currently serves as chairman and chief executive officer. A refugee who endured World War II, communism and exile in a German refugee camp, Mr. Panic arrived in the United States in the late 1950s with $20 in his pocket. He went on to found ICN Pharmaceuticals, which was the original name of MP Biomedicals. Mr. Beattie noted the longevity of many of the employees and credited that retention to company-paid child care, support of continuing education, fast-track career development and a Midwest work ethic. The company moved from Aurora to its Solon location in 2005. Nearly 140 people are employed at the Solon location. Mr. Beattie said it was the companys desire to stay in Ohio, and it took advantage of tax incentives. He said some of the biggest pluses of the companys location in Solon are the citys office of economic development, the school system, involvement of the mayors office with the business community, a blend of residential and industrial areas within the community and outstanding fire and police departments. Mr. Beattie also credited the Solon Chamber of Commerce, which he said helps me on a day-to-day basis. Theres so much in Solon, he said. For me, its a great place to work.

By SUE REID When Paytime Integrated Payroll Solutions, began slightly over 30 years ago, the focus was solely payroll. At the time, the organization provided service to small businesses that were getting lost in the shuffle of national providers. Paytime Chief Financial Officer Mary Ann Shamis recalled that those smaller clients needed to focus on their business, and payroll could be a time-consuming process. Paytime took that worry away and has continued to provide its clients over the years with peace of mind and the best in customer service and quality payroll management. The company, which began in Mayfield Heights, has evolved through the years, just as payroll has, staying on top of changes in laws and processes. The business outgrew its original location, moving to Beachwood, before landing on Bainbridge Road in Solon, where 33 full-time employees work to service nearly 1,000 clients in 49 states. Payroll has always been our main focus, Joetta Humphrey, general manager of Paytime, said. And giving personal ser vice has remained a constant, Ms. Shamis noted. We never wanted our clients to feel payroll was a commodity, but a needed service, she said. Giving that service is our main focus. Due to technology, Paytime is able to service any business, anywhere. It recently took on large restaurants as
48 The Solon Connection 2012-2013
clients, many that are franchises, throughout the United States. This has been very exciting for us, Ms. Humphrey said. We wanted to expand that niche. Ms. Shamis said restaurants represent a more complex area of payroll due to tip reporting, turnovers and timekeeping. Paytime understands the unique challenges restaurants face, she said. It provides the payroll and human resource tools needed to process payroll quickly while staying in compliance with industry regulations. Paytime boasts a web-based payroll
platform that allows restaurants to make changes, run reports and process payroll when and where its convenient. Payroll can be a total paperless process, Ms. Humphrey said, which is desired by many clients. Years ago, everyone was used to having time clocks, Ms. Shamis said. Now, everything is interactive with the computer, she said. Instead of a person at a company inputting information, it gets imported into the payroll, and that saves that step and time, Ms. Shamis said. Everything is more efficient.
Paytimes client service representative Marie Vitali brings the best in customer service to customers nationwide.
Bringing that efficiency to clients is the norm among the accredited Paytime staff members. Paytimes clients are serviced by staff who hold fundamental payroll certification and certified payroll professional certification through the American Payroll Association. In fact, most of Paytimes staff, including the hands-on management team, have had at least five years of payroll experience, with some having more than 20 years. We have an extremely knowledgeable staff, Ms. Humphrey said. Paytimes staff works to find out the needs of its clients then meets those needs. We look for how we can save our clients time and make things more efficient for them, Ms. Humphrey said. We want to make their lives easier when it comes to payroll. To that end, Paytime has over the years expanded its Payroll Without Limits mission to Solutions Without Limits. As a result, it offers integrated and comprehensive payroll, tax, human resource and business solutions to clients anywhere in the United States. Paytime does not charge clients who add, change or terminate employees. That is unlike many service bureaus. There are no extra charges incurred when a client adds earnings or deduction codes. Ms. Humphrey noted that any Paytime client can go online, where a wealth of knowledge in the area of human resources is offered. That includes laws, documentation and employee manual assistance, to name a few. They also can use Paytimes pay-entry feature, where they can go on the computer and do their payroll, which is web-based. We have everything at their fingertips, Ms. Shamis said. Another specialized area that Paytime assists clients with is background and credit checks. This is especially helpful as the economy picks up and businesses are hiring more and more, Ms. Shamis noted. Paytime also assists its clients in reducing their tax liability. Working with payroll experts, Paytime helps clients identify and take advantage of federal and state tax credits, lowering their tax rates and increasing their bottom line. Paytime assists its clients in identifying government tax credits and incentives established to encourage business growth. We are locally based and we support this area, Ms. Shamis said. We call our own shots, and everything is decided here, she said. We do a good job, and, if we do make a mistake, were held accountable. Ms. Shamis and Ms. Humphrey said the success of Paytime through the years is directly related to the people who make up the staff. We just have a great group of people, and we support each other, Ms. Shamis said. It filters to the outside.

various issues that accompany childhood cancer through education, assistance and community organization. The larger portion of its outreach, managed giving, involves matching donors with families in need. Littlest Heroes offers an adopt-a-family program once a year and solicits donors. It obtains the names of children and families in need as a result of referrals from social workers at the hospitals, as well as direct requests from the families. The hospitals that Littlest Heroes works with include the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Childrens Hospital, Hospice of the Western Reserve and Akron Childrens Hospital. In 2011, the organization served more than 55 families through the adopt-a-family program. Ms. Eastburn said families complete a profile, and that is matched to a donor. Anyone living under the roof we provide for, she said. Needs can be as basic as socks and underwear or school supplies and computers. We have an unbelievable outpouring of donors, Ms. Eastburn said.
Donations through the adopt-a-family program enable children and families dealing with cancer to experience the joys of the holiday season. Another large part of what the organization does is a monthly meal program, where restaurants are matched with hospitals. Thanks to the generosity of donors, volunteers with Littlest Heroes have doubled the amount of meals they take to the oncology floors of the hospitals, as well as Ronald McDonald House, Ms. Eastburn said. The meal program helps families who may need the break that an outside meal provides. Others may not want to have to constantly eat out of vending machines, she said. Weve got incredible feedback from this program, she said. Local businesses and restaurants make it possible for us to ensure a healthy meal once a month for families tied to the hospital for treatment and care. Each year, Littlest Heroes sends letters to restaurants for the meal program and provides them with potential dates for when the meal would be needed. For example, Ms. Eastburn said, we may say, we need a meal donated to feed 40. The meal program aids whomever is at the
hospital to help the child. There is also a family-to-family program offered in which one family directly supports another family in need. This program provides intensive year-round support for approximately six to 10 families. Littlest Heroes coordinates an opportunity for families to provide direct support to a family experiencing childhood cancer over the course of an entire year during defined giving periods, Ms. Eastburn said. Support comes in the form of meals, clothing, school supplies and specific areas of need as defined by the receiving family, she said. There are multiple giving periods through the year, she said. Through the direct giving program called the Heroes Family Fund, Littlest Heroes distributed more than $10,000 in 2011 for basic necessities like rent, groceries, gas and meals. More than 240 people benefited from this support, Ms. Eastburn noted. We are constantly trying to look at feedback to improve those programs, she said. We can make a continued impact on the families and ensure it is comfortable for the donors who are making such a large commitment. Although specific programs are defined within the organization, Littlest Heroes is always looking for donors in any capacity, Ms. Eastburn said. While there is no requirement for the donor to meet every item on a wish list, most donors do and then some, she said. Its unbelievable the amount of outpouring that comes out, Ms. Eastburn said. People are so wonderful. Its such a great cause that they want to be a part of it. Another area of Littlest Heroes making a huge impact on families includes its banner program, Art for Childrens Sake. The program assists children in creating works of art that describe their emotions and feelings while being treated for cancer. Ms. Eastburn explained that the artwork is then prepared for sale through auction and the Littlest Heroes online marketplace to directly impact the wellbeing of patients and their families. A portion of the proceeds is allocated to the Littlest Heroes scholarship fund for childhood cancer. For many of the children, it is the first time they have ever painted, Ms. Eastburn said. It benefits the children emotionally many times, she noted. It also opens their eyes to a love of art, she said. They write about and paint whatever is in their hearts. The art kits are delivered to the hospitals or childrens homes by volunteers. The children are given time to paint, then the artworks are picked up for the contest. please turn to page 52

The kids win incredible prizes, Ms. Eastburn said. Winners are separated into age categories, and children also are given themes. In 2011, it was, Every song tells a story, Ms. Eastburn said. The artwork is also turned into prints and note cards. We hold a reception for the kids and always are looking for corporate sponsors, she said. Donors and volunteers for Littlest Heroes come from all over Northeast Ohio, as does the majority of children and families that the organization serves. Weve been told that there are no other organizations that meet specific needs like ours, Ms. Eastburn said. We are one of the very few, if not only organization, that can fill a need now. An example is if a child has been suddenly put on a specific diet due to the illness and its expensive. We can provide the grocery card immediately, she said. No gift is too small, she noted. We get all kind of calls from parents whose children want to help, Ms. Eastburn said. Grade-school children have come to wrap gifts as a way to give back. They also participate in the Littlest Heroes annual charity baseball tournament held in the summer. The tournament brings youth baseball teams from across Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Indiana to participate over a weekend to raise support for the families served by Littlest Heroes. Its kids helping kids, Ms. Eastburn said. It represents just one of the many success stories that surround the organization. There are so many, she said. We had one donor call us this year whose child was serviced by us years ago. The child is
from page 51
doing well now, and they wanted to give back, she said. The fact they could give back was so fulfilling to them, Ms. Eastburn said. There also are many children in the community who want to raise funds to help the children ser ved by Littlest Heroes. Its very gratifying, Ms. Eastburn said, all these little successes. It is those stories that keep her and the dedicated staff and volunteers going, she said. As long as were helping one child, we are doing everything, Ms. Eastburn said. Thats all we need. Thats what keeps us going. Seeing smiles on the childrens faces, such as at the annual art show, is priceless, she said. Thats why were here.
