Tubatse Chromes smelter in December 2008 without recent upgrades such as an almost completed addition to the baghouse (photograph: Platinum Gazette)

Tubatse Chrome to generate their own electricity

Tubatse Ferrochrome is one of the Samancor Chrome Smelting Operations situated in Steelpoort. The company prides itself with the production of charge chrome that enables the creation of a strong, clean and safe stainless steel that adds lasting value for a brighter future. Tubatse has the capacity to produce 420kt of ferrochrome per annum with an energy consumption of 1600 GWh/a. It is caught in the vice of Eskoms price demand and the security of supply that limit the production capacities. It is from these challenges that the innovative capacity of Tubatse Ferrochrome was induced; Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency initiatives were born to save energy and preserve the environment. In the production of Chrome from the six submerged arc furnaces at Tubatse, about 996000Nm3/h fume gas at 550 C is lost to the atmosphere with an equivalent of 42MVA of energy. The energy can be equated to 126kt of coal used to produce electricity. Tubatse Chrome has come up with an innovative solution by building a

power plant which will recover some of the lost heat energy from the furnaces and converting it into electric power. The selected technology also preserves the use of water. The final design of the plant is completed, construction will commence in August 2012. Tubatse Chrome will be producing their own clean energy by August 2013! The project will enable Tubatse to remain technologically competitive, reduce the Tubatse energy consumption by 18.76%,

lay a solid foundation for the sustainable development the business, reduce the carbon footprint by over 200,000 tCO2e per annum, create approximately 30 sustainable professional employment opportunities. The company says We live the dream to make power affordable such that only the rich can afford to buy candles.

Would you support a central savings

The South African Treasury this week spoke about concept suggestions in the run-up to the set-up of a national savings fund for pension provision. According to the Minister of Finance, Mr Pravin Gordhan it will take a paradigm shift for individuals, the financial sector and government to make the concepts work. He said that the cost of financial retirement products is way to high and the end yield much lower than it should be. In South Africa only 10% of people going on pension can retain their lifestyle with the income they receive. 90% of people have to be satisfied with a lower income. The aim of the products Gordhan is proposing is to relieve this problem and help ensure that pensioners have a better life after retirement than what is currently the case. Government is also suggesting that all retirement products be standardized and they are looking at cheaper options to these products. One of the problems theyve pin pointed is that people, when they change jobs, take the money from their pension fund with a company an not always re-invest it with their new fund. They are looking at ways to enforce the safekeeping of retirement fund money. Government is also looking at creating a standard tax for money going to pension funds and products, including annuities and policies. We asked readers what they think about the concept suggestions and whether they would support such and initiative.

Ms Carol Mnisi said: Yes, it is a good idea. If it is affordable I would put some money into such a fund.

Mnr. Jan Louw s: Om die belasting minder en beter gestruktureerd te maak is n goeie idee. n Mens sal maar moet wag en kyk tot hulle alles meer geformuleer het om te kan s of dit sal werk en of ons dit sal ondersteun.

Me. Marlene Prinsloo s: Nee, ek sal dit nie ondersteun nie. Hulle gebruik dan die regeringspensioengeld vir SANRAL. Ek sal my geld nooit weer sien nie!

Mr Kabelo Sesoko said: If it was a financial institution planning this I would say good, but not government.

Mr Lucky Nkuna said: It is a good idea. If you want to have something at the end of the day you must save. Save when you are young.

Mr Silas Maebana and Ms Connie Zwane said: It is a bad idea. Many people get only small salaries and they cannot afford to save. They must buy food and pay the societies, they dont have extra money to think of their old age.

Mr Jackson Sebopela and Ms Salonm Sebopela said: It is not easy to trust government these days, especially with their Secrecy Bill with which they dont want us to know things and with which it is easy to hide things. There are also so many scandals with corruption. Who will look after that money? How can we trust government with our money? It will be good if they reduce the tax on the pension or retirement money.

Me. Elmien van der Merwe s: n Mens moet voorsorg tref vir jou oudag, so ek sal so iets ondersteun.

Pastor M.D. Mampa said: It may be difficult to implement such a plan as they have now. People are afraid of new things and we are not used to saving. You know politicians are also saying this and that but it is often just talk. It can be a good thing if it can work and help people be better off in their old age.

scheme to make retirement better?

Ms Tema Masemetoane said: It will be good. Most people are not able to save, but now at the end of the time when you are old you may have some money.

Mr Frans Selepe and Mr Serape Tshabalala said: It is a good idea. Especially about the tax. You get paid, you get taxed, you buy things, you get taxed. We would not like it if they kept our pension fund contributions locked so that when you switch jobs you cannot get the money paid out. We would suggest that if youve been with a company for say more than 15 years, they should allow you to get access to 50% of the money. This will help people to be able to buy a house or a car which they otherwise might not have been able to do. Left: Mr Pasopa Seimela said: It is a good thing. Ill try to save money in there if they create such a fund.

Ms Jaqueline Mkase said: It is a good idea. I will contribute so that I will have something extra for my grandchildren when I am in old age.

Me. Hermien Labuschagne en me. Annette Labuschagne s: Dit behoort n goeie ding te wees. Elkeen behoort te kan spaar en n neseiertjie bymekaar te maak. Daar is te veel oumense wat swaarkry.

Mr Sipho Ntuli said: For high earners it will be a breeze, but for those struggling for their livelihoods it is difficult. How will they put money away? It will be good to make the tax the same on all products.

Mr Gad Sekhukhune said: Yes, it is good. We, the black people are very poor. This is the best thing government can do. Im ready to contribute to such a fund.

Me.

Ms. Tebogo Nkgadime and Ms Precious Ngwenyama said: It will be a very good thing. Old people will then not suffer so much when they are no longer working. It will be a great thing. Tax on old peoples money is totally wrong.

As part of Tubatse Chromes commitment to making a positive impact in local communities in which we operate, the event has been planned to bring people from all walks of life together in a spirit of togetherness. We believe that together we can make things happen that will really make a difference in the day to day lives of the people that live in the greater Tubatse area. says Desmond McManus, general manager of Tubatse Chrome. Apart from hosting a day filled with fun and festivities the event is aimed at broadening the appeal for road running and walking within the local communities. For those runners wanting to run away the post Comrades blues this is the perfect opportunity to get back on the road with an interesting and easy 21km race route. The 10km eco race and 5km family fun run routes through a nature reserve making for beautiful bushveld scenery with the second half of the route run on tar surface through the streets of Tubatse residential village. Both events end in the lush green surrounds of the golf course. The routes are planned to offer something different and interesting for both professional and social runners in an area which one would least expect it. says Willemien Pretorius, chairperson of the Samancor Chrome Marathon Club, proud hosts of the Samancor Chrome Eco Road Races. The route for the 21km race starts in Eerstegeluk at the Maelebe Primary School with the first 5kms showcasing local village life, then crossing over the R555 into the grounds of Samancor Lannex Mine, through the Tubatse Golf Club nature reserve area and ending at the golf course grounds. The 10km route and 5km Family Fun Run routes start and finish at the Tubatse Chrome Golf Club. Professional, serious runners and casual runners and walkers from all walks of life can look forward to a well organised race with great prize monies for category winners. T-shirts will be awarded to the first 250 participants over the finish line in the 21km, 10km and 5km Fun Run. Medals awarded to all finishers within official cutoff times. Bring the family and join us for a day filled with fun and festivities in what promises to be the largest community event of its kind in the greater Tubatse area.
