Major Project for Mat 120

Select a continuous quantitative variable and collect at least 30 values. For example, you may ask PTC students how old they are? or how many hours per week they work on a job? You must get the instructors approval for data collected. 1. Before you collect the data, you need to decide what a likely average might be (ie. average age of PTC students is # and average hours worked per week is #). (4 points) State the purpose of the project. Give a reason other than required assignment for Statistics class. Example: Determine the age of most PTC students. Determine the number of hours per week a PTC student works. (5 points) Define the population (the whole group that is being studied). (5 points) State how the sample was selected. You need to use one of the four sampling techniques: random, systematic, stratified, or cluster. Explain the process you used to select your sample. (5 points) Show the raw data. You need to give a list of your data values you collected. (5 points) Construct a frequency distribution for the data values using 5 to 10 classes. Give the range, width, classes, class boundaries, tally, frequency, and cumulative frequency. (10 points) Construct a histogram, ogive, and frequency polygon. You must use Excel to do these graphs. (10 points) Analyze the results of the frequency distribution, histogram, ogive, and frequency polygon. (5 points) For the data values, find the following: (show work for these measures) a. b. c. d. e. f. mean (5 points) median (5 points) mode (5 points) midrange (5 points) range (5 points) variance (5 points)

Are there any extreme values (outliers)? What are the extreme values? Explain the process you used to find the extreme values. (8 points) Which measurement of central tendency best describes the data values? Why? (8 points) Find the five number summary including the work for finding the three quartiles. Construct a box plot. Interpret the results of the box plot : positively skewed, negatively skewed, or symmetric. (10 points) Randomly select three different values from your sample. Let the variables a, b, and c represent the three values where a is the smallest number you chose, b is the middle value you chose, and c is the largest value you chose. List the values for a = #, b = #, and c = #. If your data is approximately normal, use z-scores to find the following probabilities. If your data has outliers or is skewed, you will need to use the method of counting the number of data points that fall within the desired range and computing the probabilities. (10 points) A. B. C. D. P(x > a) P(a < x < c) P(x < a) P(b < x < c)

14. Using your guess from part #1, run a hypothesis test to conclude if your initial guess was correct. State the null and alternative hypothesis and choose the type of test statistic to use. Complete all 5 steps required for a hypothesis test including a stated conclusion. (15 points)

15. Find the 95% confidence interval for the mean of your data. Remember to choose the correct test statistic equation for your data and give the reason for this choice. Once you have the interval, summarize your conclusion. (15 points)
