Hello Sports Fans,
Hope the publication reaches you in great spirits. Although fans were disappointed in the Red Wings early exit in round one, just think that the 2012-2013 season will start as soon as late September. Not too far away! Will Nick Lidstrom return? I think so as he is fit, lean, and in tremendous shape for an athlete in his early fourties. Also, the winter classic, at the big house, might be a deciding factor. Imagine, a NHL game in front of 120,000 fans.. Definitely something to share with your Grandchildren. Oh, and how about the Lions draft!! Worth at least a B+ in my books. Mayhew is pretty clever with his best athlete available theory. Bo Schembeckler always said, I never recruited a football player. I always recruited an athlete. You can take an athlete and convert him into any sports position with enough practice. Oh well, I can hardly wait till football season. My favorite sport. It wont be long until training camps open- In just a few more issues of Sportz Detroit. And, lets not forget our Tigers. The first part of this season gave us a little concern. he Prince of a town built on motors and music will not be the best player in baseball in 2012, he will not hit a home run in every at bat, he will not carry the Tigers to the Series on his own...and thats just fine. Prince Fielder will be in the top five in the league in home runs, runs batted in, and slugging. Fielder will combine with Miguel Cabrera to be the best three-four combo in baseball. He will make his teammates better because he is a professional and an outstanding human being with a kind-heart, and the charisma and genuine love for the game that it takes to lead. And last, this Fielder will be remembered as the Fielder that played in Detroit. It feels good, everyones been cool so far, everyone likes my kids, that always helps, Fielder said as his seven-year-old boy Jadyn ran through the locker room. The youngest player to hit 50 home runs in a season joins the best hitter in baseball, Cabrera, to form 515 pounds of the most perfectly erected genetics to swing a piece of lumber. Its awesome. I had the privilege to be a part of a great three-four combo in Milwaukee, now here. Its great to be able to watch superstars hit every day, Prince said with a grin. As a child, Fielder, like many of his generation, watched in awe of no. 24 in Seattle. Ken Griffey Jr. is the best of his time, Prince said. It comes then, as little surprise that Fielder loved the superstars Super Nintendo game, Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball, as it was the greatest baseball game of its time. I always played with Seattle, had to hit with the Kid, Fielder said.
Fielder extends to complete the back end of the double play. Coming to Detroit meant saying goodbye to the only teammates Fielder has known since coming to the bigs. Obviously I miss all of them, but probably Rickie (Weeks), we played together since we were 12, so I probably miss him the most. He lives close to me, we still see each other, and talk when we can, Fielder said. With visible tattoos on his forearms, the 2009 Home Run Derby champ spoke on his ink: I dont know how many I have because theyre all drawn into one. I got my first at 14, a soft-spoken Fielder said. Even the highest-paid-player in MLB history and the Prince of Motown looks forward to meeting his idols: Drake and Kendrick Lamar, Fielder said. The fans have been given everything they had hoped for from Fielder, who believes it is his obligation to show his support in the form of signing autographs and taking pictures with adoring fans. It didnt take long for Fielder to make a splash of epic proportions in his new hometown, combining with Miguel Cabrera for four home runs (2/2) in the Tigers second game versus the Red Sox. While it is a growing concern of many fans that Fielder has failed to homer in 15-straight-games, the bash brother has a career of experience that hints his power lingers just around the corner. Through 18 games the Prince of Motown is hitting .328, with eight runs batted in, and continues to be an intimidating presence in the four-hole. Austin Jackson looks for repeat of his rookie season

By John Raffel any other Detroit starters and No 2 in the American League. But as a rookie, Jackson kept it all in stride Its just a statistic, he said. Its a sign that youve been hitting well. Its a long season. Theres still a lot more things we have to accomplish. I dont think about it. He had a career high five hits against the Angels in one game and became the first Detroit rookie in five seasons to have that many hits in a contest. But even at that time, Jackson was striking out more frequently than he would prefer. Im making good contact and Im getting base hits when Im putting it in play, he said. Still Im working on the strikeouts. Thats one thing Ive always struggled with. Im trying to get to a certain level of concentration. Leyland raised a lot of eyebrows in the 2010 preseason when he decided Jackson would be his leadoff hitter. I was more comfortable hitting second, Jackson said. But this was the opportunity and it was what they wanted me to do. It plays hand to hand to my game anyway. Jackson has been comfortable playing in center field. Ive always felt comfortable on defense, he said. Thats something I take pride at. On defense Im more in control somewhat. Im continually trying to get better at it. Jacksons spring training batting averages were .355 in 2010 and .209 in 2011, which, ironically, would carry over into his respective regular seasons. A good sign, however, is that after 14 games for this preseason, he was batting .282. Tigers lead off man and center fielder has come out of the gates roaring in 2012, collecting nine hits and scoring seven runs in Detroits first four games, alleviating any concerns over his previous strikeout woes. He is the sixth player in Tigers history with at least that many hits and runs scored in the clubs first four games: Pop Dillon, Doc Casey, Harry Heilmann, Ty Cobb, and Chris Shelton. ustin Jackson knows what its like to be on a hot hitting streak and also what its like to be struggling. But its no secret that the Tiger center fielder would prefer a repeat of the 2010 season as he gets ready for the 2012 campaign. Jackson enjoyed a sensational rookie season with a .293 batting average. The Sporting News named him 2010 American League Rookie of the Year. But last April, it appeared the the Tigers leadoff hitter might be engulfed with the dreaded sophomore jinx which has frustrated many second-year players in the Major Leagues. He was only hitting .160 for the first month. Gradually Jackson worked his way out of it and was able to almost make Tiger coaches forget about his poor performance at the plate with a sparkling glove in the outfield that was robbing many hitters of home runs and extra base hits. By mid-May, Jackson started showing signs of snapping out of his slump. He, in one week, batted .321 with four extra-base hits and eight RBIs and raised his average to .229, obviously way off from the previous season, but encouraging enough to start putting a smile on manager Jim Leylands face. Hes putting it in play on a more consistent basis, Leyland said during Jacksons resurgence. Sometimes its best to let things happen. And it will happen. When the 2011 season ended, Jackson had 22 stolen bases, 10 home runs, 45 RBIs, 90 runs scored and a .249 batting average. It wasnt hard for Jackson to explain how he was able to snap out of the slump. Staying positive, he said. Ive just been staying positive. It was a big challenge. Its hard to go out there each and every day when youre not doing as well as you expect and youre not doing your job as a leadoff man. You have to understand that if youre in the lineup, you have to go out and do your best. He was hitting .333 with 19-of-57 in one 14-game stretch. The Tigers were 12-4 when he scored at least one run in the first 16 games he came across home plate. Defensively, Jackson never seemed to lose his touch in 2011. He turned in some classic gems from his center field

In May, as one classic example, Kansas Citys Eric Hosmer made a bid on a deep fly ball of almost 400 feet to straight away center at Comerica Park. But Jackson hauled it in on a spectacular running catch. When it was hit, I didnt think it was hit that well, Jackson said. I realized it was hit a lot better than I thought. I thought he had no chance to catch that ball to be honest with you, Leyland said after the game. It was a tremendous play. Another Jackson fielding gem came in late August in an 8-7 win at Comerica over the Cleveland Indians while the Tigers were starting to take control of the divisional race. Tiger reliever Jose Valverde was able to preserve the one-run lead and record his 37th straight save in the ninth. Jackson, after catching a flyball, threw out Kosuke Fukudome at the plate to end the game. We kept battling, the pitchers did their job and we came out with it, Jackson said. Jacksons hitting improvement played no small role in a 10-1 run in an 11-game stretch for the Tigers which got the team going full board into the divisional race. We go into every game with the same intentions to try to win, he said. No matter how it happens, we want to get it done. Leyland kept a close eye on Jackson during his early season hitting slump and expressed his confidence in his leadoff hitter while acknowledging his struggles. You have to be careful with young players, Leyland said. Theyre scared to death if they dont do good right away that theyll be sent down (to the minor leagues) or something and people talk about it. Thats the nature of the business. Players have to learn and mature and live with that stuff. Youre constantly trying to help them along. As a manager, you try to keep it quieted down as much as you can so theyre not putting extra pressure on themselves. During the 2010 season, Jackson enjoyed a sensational start as the rookie leadoff hitter for the Tigers. It was the type of start he would prefer this season. At one time, Jackson had a .356 batting average, the highest among

The Merced native recalled a game in Seattle where some of his closest friends supported him in style: They all wore shirts with the Superman emblem on it, it read Super-fist, Fister said. Fisters favorite baseball player is Cal Ripken Jr. Fist-em-up Tigers! It is likely that the right-hander will miss two more turns in the rotation before returning to the Tigers. RHP Doug Fister was acquired by Detroit at the July 31 trade deadline last season, Fister went 8-1 with a 1.79 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 10 starts. Fister was born on February 4, 1984 in Merced, Calif. He is 6-foot-8 and weighs 200 pounds. He played for Fresno State. Fister generates a lot of ground balls with few strikeouts, but he has a low walk rate.

I love the addition of Fielder and our pitching rotation, but I just cant see the Tigers winning against the NL powerhouses of San Francisco or Philadlephia. They will get there, but they wont win it all. I pray they do! I love Verlander and plan to watch a lot of home games this year. I dont see any reason why they cant win the whole thing.

Well, on paper they look like the perfect fantasy baseball team on their own! I wouldnt mind having all of them on my team. They will make the playoffs for sure, but winning the Series... I dont know. They have a decent chance.

Young gun Porcello expected to be a difference maker
Hard-rocker Coke delivers with game on the line

In the midst of Curtis Grandersons 2011 MVP candidacy, Tigers fans are quick to condemn Dombrowski for shipping off its star-center-fielder to a town that bleeds players dry, but lets hope closure was found when Phil Coke and a stellar bullpen helped sent the Yankees home for the second time in four years. In Dember of 2009, Coke was a part of a three team trade that sent Granderson to the Yankees. I dig the fans. When I come out there on the mound and Burn It To The Ground starts playing and everybody starts to get into it, it makes it fun, Coke said as his favorite part of playing in Detroit. After spending all of his big league career in the pen, the Tigers Coke was moved from the bullpen to the fifth spot in the starting rotation to start the 2011 season. Until late June, after accumulating a 18 record, Coke was moved back to the bullpen. Its not necessarily about transitioning or anything like that, its about remembering things, like in 08 I knew what I had to do day in and day out... I had my process, spending a few years in the bullpen, jacked out of my mind, you forget things, but Ive got my routine back, Coke told Sportz Detroit Magazine. His hard-knosed raging, rocker style, along with his ability to get outs with the game on the line make Coke an easy guy to like. Having had a chance to meet Uncle Kracker and Kid Rock, who were toward the top of my list anyways, Id have to say Nickleback, and Metallica, Coke offered as the musicians hed like to meet the most. The ying to yang amongst professional baseball players seems to lie in routine versus superstition. Im definitely more routine oriented. I dont have much in the way of superstitions, Ill wear a certain pair of socks then Ill blow them out, then Ill get a new pair and wear them until I blow them out, and if they suck Ill wear them in batting practice, Coke said. The hard-rocker has been steady for the Tigers out of the pen in 2012, surrendering three runs over the course of nine innings work, sporting a 4.5/1 strikeout to walk ratio. Coke spoke out against bullying at Wayne State University by sharing personal experiences from his past for the National Task Force on Children Exposed to Violence. Although there are numerous positive examples, it is refreshing to see a professional athlete take an initiative and be a leader in the community.
nce the youngest player in the Bigs, 23-year-old Rick Porcello entered his fourth year with a bonafide chance to ascend as one the the games best young, right-handed-arms. The first round pick out of Morristown, NJ, has shown flashes of his brilliance in his young career, but is yet to establish himself as a consistent stopper in the rotation. Weve got some good pieces, now we have to go out there and perform on the field. Nothing happens until you play the games, and thats what youre focused on right now, working hard and playing good baseball, Porcello said. Fans are not the only ones who cherish the lovely confines of Comerica Park. I love pitching at our park, cant complain how big it is, the fans, Porcello said. If he had to pitch anywhere away from home, Porcello seeks the space and solitude of Safeco Field. Id have to say Seattle, definitely a friendly pitchers ballpark, Porcello said. With the game on the line there are two players the 6-foot-5 righty would rather not see enter the batters box: Robinson Cano and Jason Kubel, Porcello said begrudgingly. Given the opportunity to meet any musician Ricky P kept it in the Garden State: Bruce Springstein, from Long Beach, NJ, Porcello said without hesitation. Porcello will be the difference in the Tigers having a great staff, or the best in the American League. Sixteen wins isnt out of the question. The 2012 Tigers will undoubtedly make it rain souvenirs (homeruns) for all the little boys and girls of the proud city of Detroit, but it will be a rough, tough, and consistent rotation from top to bottom that puts these vicious cats in a position to play come October. Porcello has pitched well in two of his four starts in the early season, but has been hit hard in his last two appearances. When the young right-hander is at his best he locates in the bottom half of the strike zone, inducing a plethora of a ground ball outs. When he struggles, a number of pitches left up in the zone find their way to the seats. Porcello is 1-2 with a 6.45 earned run average over four games. rior to the Tigers sold out spring training game versus the Yankees in Lakeland, skipper Jim Leyland shared words and hugged one of the games greatest, Mr. October, Reggie Jackson. One of the most beloved nicknames in all of sports was earned during five World Series appearances starting with Oakland in 1973 with a victory over the New York Mets and in 1974 with a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jackson hit one home run in each of those Series. He returned in 1977 with the Yankees and blasted 5 home runs against the Dodgers. In 2010, Jackson phoned Leyland to endorse the recently acquired Austin Jackson from the Yankees In his illustrious career Jackson notched 14 All Star appearances, five World Series rings, two Silver Sluggers, two World Series MVPs, and was a first ballot inductee to the Hall of Fame in 1993. The 65-year-old Jackson is best remembered for hitting three consecutive home runs in the clinching game of the 1977 World Series. Jacksons father Martinez Jackson, was a half Puerto Rican who worked as a tailor and was also a former second baseman with the Newark Eagles of the Negro Leagues. Peralta praises the Tigers clubhouse and fans

Tigers Jhonny Peralta rounds second after shooting into the gap. ince being traded to the Tigers from the Indians in late July of 2011, Jhonny Peralta wasted no time, homering in his first at bat as a Tiger, and then again in his third trip to the plate. It is special to be here, I knew something good was coming, my friends said it was a good thing to be a Tiger, Peralta told Sportz Detroit Magazine. For a number of years Detroit has been viewed around the league as a welcomed place for players from the Dominican and Venezuela to play. The clubhouse here, more than anywhere Ive seen, is really good, and it starts from the coach. Every coach has a lot of confidence in the guys and we all play together. When its a team... its really good, Peralta said. Before being traded Peralta was moved to third base to make way for the up and coming Asdruebal Cabrera. It made me feel good to be back at shortstop, it is my natural position. Coming from the Dominican Republic, where I played short forever, Peralta said. In just a short, three-hour-drive from one city in the Midwest to another, made all the difference in the world to Peralta. The fans are unbelievable, the first time I came to Detroit, I could see the difference, from Cleveland to Detroit, there is a big difference. The fans are really good no matter what, whether we win or lose, Peralta
said. At 29, Peralta has a legitimate chance to improve on a very productive 2011 season, producing 21 homeruns and 86 RBIs from the shortstop position. Like many of his teammates, Peralta is a streaky hitter gauging at a similar temperature to the April weather in Detroit: cold. Through 20 games the Tigers short stop is hitting just .236 with zero home runs, and five runs batted in. Kevins favorite three baseball movies are The Natural, Major League, and Bull Durham. You may not notice the Library Sports Pub & Grill when driving along Grand River, but you will notice the parking lot full of cars. Across from the newly renovated Marty Feldman Chevrolet, the Pub has been there going on 16 years and has certainly seen its fair share of competition come and go. An upscale sports eatery, as the owner Bob Barnett describes it, has always kept hospitality and quality as the recipe for success. The Library Sports Pub has been known as a great place to watch the game whether it be a football Saturday on a fall afternoon or a Red Wings Stanley Cup Game on a beautiful spring evening. Multiple televisions and big screen projection all showing a crisp, high definition picture are scattered throughout the pub. The Library Sports Pub is not you typical sports themed bar with just burgers (that are brought in fresh daily never frozen.) The wings are jumbo size compared to an unnamed competitor whose wings are one bite and done. The Cajun double baked wings are just some
of the best around and of course you can always rely on just plain or mild, hot, or blazin. Pastas. salads, sandwiches, or some of the specials like Friday nites sauteed lake perch are done with quality and value. Barnett also said that the establishment is known for its high-quality beer on tap and has been awarded by Anheuser-Busch as a master draft account. In other words, we do draft beer damn good!!! It is difficult to be all things to everyone, but the Library Sports Pub still seems to pull the majority of this off, particularly with the change in the smoking law. Bob has said that the Library Sports Pub has seen an increase in food sales vs. alchohol sales with more families attributing to that change. It has truly evolved into the family sports pub the Barnett brothers envisioned back in the mid 90s when they took over an existing Shields Pizzaria. Its been a great ride so far, Barnett said. And with the recent upgrades, he said that they hope to be a player in the sports pub market for another 15 years.

oing his best rendition of Soul Asylums Runaway Train, Red Wings left wing, Justin Abdelkader is a train on ice, best known for his ability to demolish opponents foolish enough to be caught in his tracks. Right from the get go, Abdelkader told Sportz Detroit Magazine as to when he started demolishing his opposition. As soon as they allowed us to start hitting I played physical to get under peoples skin, Abdelkader said. Nothing pumps up no. 8 for a big game more than the fire-breathing, blood-spitting, metal band, Kiss. I like Detroit Rock City, it always gets me fired up especially in the playoffs, Abdelkader said. Abdelkader was brought up to the Red Wings as a replacement for Tom Kopeck, who sat out Game 5 of the 2009 Western Conference semi-finals series against the Anaheim Ducks. Coach Mike Babcock sent Abdelkader to replace Kopeck because of his ability to flatten the enemy. In a town known for its hard hat work ethic, Abdelkader quickly became a fan favorite. Work hard. Do what you can each shift. He was always on me when I had a bad game, Abdelkader said of the best advice his father Joseph gave him. He pushed me to work harder. If I was floating on ice, not moving my legs, Id hear about it. Its about working on both ends of the ice, being physical and controlling what I can control, the enforcer said. The Muskegon native has always had a flare for the dramatic, scoring his first goal versus the Penguins in Game 1 of the 2009 Stanley Cup. A lot of things went through my head, but I had just lost a good friend from Michigan State, Brandon Gordon, in January I felt like he was there and helped me score the goal, Abdelkader said fighting tears. A lot went through my head but he was one in particular. He had cancer to the bone it was a real tough deal there. Brandon Lee Gordon took his last breath, February 22nd, 2009, succumbing to osteosarcoma after a courageous, two-year-battle with the cancer. Despite countless tumors throughout his body and extreme difficulty breathing, Brandon continued to fight. Brandons Defense has been erected in his honor to continue his fight for the awareness of childrens cancer. Kevin Alan Lamb grew up on a pond but rarely played hockey because it was difficult to find skates that fit the 6-foot-7 Willow Farm native. Justin Verlander easily where as some others may just let the guys run the locker room. With the baseball IQ that Jim brings, Id be shocked to see this team finish lower than second place in the American League. The Tigers have without a doubt the most dominant pitcher in the game today in Justin Verlander. His unmatched skill will help this team every fifth day with very few bumps in the road. If he has even close to the year he had last year when he was the first pitcher to be named the MVP in nearly 20 years, the opponents will have trouble getting through any series with the Tigers. Last year Verlander had 15 wins after a Tigers loss. This is an unbelievable stat. It means that rarely if ever did the team lose a large amount of games in a row. Obviously if you want to win, you need that consistency to continue. If anyone can make that happen, Verlander can. I expect another 20+ win season. Even if he isnt as dominant this year I still expect a great year for Verlander and the team behind him. Verlander is not the only pitcher on the staff. The team has a good rotation outside of him and I look for some improvements in them as well. Doug Fister has proven to be a solid number 2 starter, and with Rick Porcello and Max Scherzer having another year under them I only see an upside. Still we have questions about who will be the number 5 starter. Personally I think that it will be lefty Andy Oliver making his first full season in Detroit a good one. He will struggle at times I think, but what rookies dont? As for the bullpen, The Tigers are stacked. Last year we were surprised by the brilliant performance during the season of Al Alburquerque, who can really prove he belongs in Detroit with a good season. Theres other relievers too to bridge the gap to Jos Valverde, who is proving to be more than a good closer. He was nearly unhittable last season as he racked up 49 saves in as many chances. Joaqun Benoit was a great 8th inning pitcher last year and may not have to pitch as often with the signing of Octavio Dotel in the offseason. Dotel has pitched for 13 major-league teams, not so many because hes bad, but because teams send him to contending teams that need a pitcher for the playoff run. I personally expect a lot of these guys and theyll all be fun to watch. The Tigers have possibly the most dangerous 3-4-5 hitters in the majors this year. With the signing of Prince Fielder, the team obviously hopes to contend for a long time. This power hitting first baseman can hit...and hit...and hit some more. Hell hit fourth in the lineup behind Miguel Cabrera, who hit over 30 home runs himself last year. That makes a couple straight hitters in the lineup who could hit 40 bombs this year. Though Comerica is known as a pitchers park, these guys will mash their way to history possibly. Throw

hen you think of overpowering lineups and dominant pitching you dont usually think of the Tigers. This year however, I think well see all of that and more. It kills me to say it as a Yankees fan, but this team is going to be special this year. In this article well go through the strengths and weaknesses of this team and what we can reasonably expect assuming the team stays healthy. What with the major signings pulled off in free agency to the stacked lineup the Tigers already had, there is a lot of upside and reason to feel excited. Well start off by talking about the manager. Jim Leyland has been with the Tigers since 2006 when he took the team to the world series where they lost to St. Louis. Leyland is thought to be one of the best managers in the game and Detroiters have been very happy in general with how his teams perform. His firy personality can bring a team from the edge into a team that competes every day. Over the years sometimes hes questioned about how he plays some of his players, but they always seem to blossom into the quality guys he wants on the team. Leyland has a reputation of turning average teams into great ones. His time in Florida shows this. A bunch of players that had talent sure, but werent expected to win ended up taking the championship in 1997. He manages players like

Tips on proper care for your hunting dog

By Shannon Moore Hunting dogs are valuable to game hunters all over the world. They make great companions both at home and in the field. They make hunting a more enjoyable and convenient sport for everyone as well. Not only do hunters gain much by owning these dogs, but the dogs thouroughly enjoy their work. It give the dog a real sense of purpose, and the challenge helps them be better well-behaved dogs overall. These dogs live such a rigourous lifestyle; they require top quality care. Below are some tips on how to care for your hunting dog: Be sure to keep up-to-date vaccinations. Hunting dogs are more susceptible to disease, particularly giardia and parvovirus due to continuous outdoor activity. Hunting dogs should be spayed or neutered to prevent wandering or attracting unwanted attention from other animals in the field. This will also help to keep the dogs focused on their job. Over 100,000 pets are killed in animal shelters each year due to pet overpopulation issues. Spaying and neutering is the most effective way to avoid contibuting to this problem. Keep hunting dogs wellgroomed, especially long-haired dogs. Long-haired breeds provide a perfect habitat for mites, tics and fleas. Short hair on a hunting dog is a great preventative measure from unwanted critters. Find a good, reliable groomer to keep dogs hair and nails in good shape. A balanced diet high in protein is essential to provide hunting dogs the energy they need in the field. HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE! Be sure to provide fresh drinking water at all times especially in the field. Dehydration is common among hunting dogs. Make sure your dog has current ID tags with contact information. A GPS collar is a good safeguard as well from your dog getting lost in the field. Be sure that your hunting dog is well trained and will obey simple return commands. Consider some sort of foot protection if you know your dog will be encountering rough terrain. These can be found at most retail hunting stores. Carry a first-aid kit while in the field complete with bandages, antibiotic ointments and a variety of tools that may be necessary for prying out a thorn or splinter. If your dog is going to be kept outside for any length of time, be sure to provide a clean, warm, dry, and safe place for escape from the elements. Finally, be humane, Never leave your dog 100% of the time especially not chained or in a pen, alone. This kind of isolation can cause the dog to become bored and aggressive traits not desireable for a hunting companion or pet. Dogs are pack animals; they need to be with their pack even a human pack. Caring for a dog is not easy, but it is simple. A happy, healthy dog makes a great companion. Follow these simple guidelines to ensure you and your dogs have a great relationship. Happy hunting!

WHAT A DRAFT!!!
RILEY REIff
Round 1, Iowa Riley Reiff is one of the top ranked offensive tackles in the 2012 draft class. Originally perceived as a top-15 pick, Reiffs measurables (33 1/4 inch arms) were deemed too short for an NFL left tackle, although longer in comparison to Joe Thomas (32 1/2) and Jake Long (32 7/8). At 6-foot-6, 313-pounds, the All-American is a behemoth of man, and a welcomed security blanket for Matthew Stafford. He was named All-Big Ten by coaches and media, and elected to forgo his final year of eligibility at Iowa to enter the draft.The native of Parkston, San Diego, will likely start for the Lions in 2012 and has longevity for years to come in Honolulu Blue.
LIONS

Round 4, Temple The 6-foot-1, 233-pound Whitehead is undersized at the linebacker position, but is a hardworking, overachiever that logs the hours necessary to improve. He uses his big hands to free himself from blockers, and pursues aggressively. Whitehead played safety, running back, wide receiver, and tight end at his New Jersey prep school. The experienced linebacker never shies away from contact, consistently plays hard, and is a powerful blitzer. While he lacks elite play-making instincts against the run, his instincts as a pass rusher are above average. His long arms and big hands clog up throwing lanes, but he needs to improve his upperbody-strength to avoid being locked up by bigger blockers. His most immediate contribution will be on special teams where his speed and athleticism will be best utilized.
RYAN BROYLES
Round 2, Oklahoma Easily the Lions most controversial pick, many were shocked when Detroit selected Broyles, a wide-out, recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee in November. The 5-foot-10, 188-pound receiver set the all time NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision record for career receptions, 349. Broyles is a two-time All-American and first team All-Big-12. Although projected to go in the third or fourth round, the Lions are convinced his surgically repaired knee is healthy, and were overwhelmed by his production, work ethic and dedication. With a 4.57 40 time, they seem him as a faster version of Wes Welker. He is an elusive runner with shifty hips and toughness.
ChRIS GREENWOOD
Round 5, Albion A graduate of Detroit King High, Greenwood spent his prep years playing in the shadow of Ford, and always dreamed of one day playing for his favorite team, the Lions. Greenwood, a 6-foot-2, 193-pound cornerback from Albion College, is the first player from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association to be selected in the NFL Draft in 45 years. The Detroit native attended Northwood University and Eastern Michigan before transferring to Albion. His size, speed and vertical leap project a high-level of success in the NFL (4.34 40, 43 vertical). He will have to adjust to bigger, faster players making the transition from Division III, but Division I players face the same challenge. Greenwood adds depth to the corner position for the Lions, and believes his time has come to play with the best.
DWIGhT BILL BENTLEY

Round 3, Louisiana Lafayette Many experts contend that Bentley could emerge as one of the top corners in this years draft class. From the same hometown as Lions corner Alphonso Smith, Pahokee, Fla., Bentley is considered a steal in the third round. After reaching in round two, the Lions made a great value pick with Bentley, who is a pure-cover-corner with the ability to mirror wide receivers. At 5-foot-10, 182-pounds, Bentley clocked a blistering 4.43 40, and isnt afraid to throw his body around. He is aggressive, possesses good ball skills, and is multi-dimensional with special teams experience as both a gunner and jammer.
JONTE GREEN
Round 6, New Mexico State The 6-foot, 184-pound Green is an athletic cornerback with a number of plus attributes. He is aggressive by nature and works hard to defend the run. Green is apt at keeping the game in front of him, enabling him to make a significant amount of tackles up field. With a 4.4 40 the Lions like Greens speed and aggression He recorded 70 tackles and lead the team with 14 passes broken up, ranking Green second in the WAC. He is a return specialist that specializes in setting up blocks by reacting quickly and assertively.
TRAvIS LEWIS
Round 7, Oklahoma The third Sooner taken by the Lions represents what is possibly the biggest steal of the draft. Travis Lewis recorded a team-high 136 tackles and four interceptions as a vocal leader and captain. At 6-foot-1, 246-pounds, the linebacker was a semifinalist for the Butkus Award, given to the top linebacker in college football. Once regarded as one of the top defensive prospects in the NCAA, tough injuries late in his career proved detrimental to his draft status. Lewis is an instinctive player, he sifts through the trash well and possesses a knact for finding the ball. While he lacks elite athletic ability and top-end speed, his natural feel for the game and intelligence from the middle of the field make Lewis an intriguing final round pick with tremendous upside if he is able to regain top form.
RONNELL LEWIS
Round 4, Oklahoma A two-time Consensus All-American, Lewis is one of the best outside linebacker prospects in the class. Known for his big hits, the 6-foot-2, 244-pound Lewis has earned the nickname, The Hammer. Another great value-pick for the Lions, Lewis has the ability to play either defensive end of linebacker. Where he lacks in size, he makes up for in pure talent. The Dewar, Oklahoma native, ran a 4.68 40 at the combine, and pressed a beastly 36 repetitions of 225-pounds.
