HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING THIS PROBLEM?


Findings of a Survey concerning the barriers for development in the council:

Insecurity and social conflicts are peoples common fate Violence against women and children is a frequent issue Womens status in the society is unfair: they cannot inherit from parents

IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT?

Insecurity: Causes the rupture of social cohesion Constitutes a barrier for production Womens inaccess to land and property is a form of violence towards women: It reduces productivity And promotes poverty

HOW ARE YOU GOING ABOUT ADDRESSING THI S PROBLEM?


I produced a film entitled Lozoka I elaborated and distributed pamphlets about Womens Rights towards land and property I conducted workshops on: The implementation of an Action Plan for Security (PLOS) Institution of taxes to restorate discipline I conducted several campaings of sensitization on: Womens Rights concerning land owning Women and childrens Rights towards violence Gender equality and the fight against gender based violence

WHAT IS THE TIME-FRAME FOR THE PROJECT?

The project started in 2007 Surveys and campaigns of sensitization are still continuing until now

WHO IS THE KEY TARGET? WHO IS INVOLVED? ARE WOMEN AND MEN EQUALLY INVOLVED?

The members of the Association FITAFIBE , farmers and stockbreeders, the population in general.

Who took part? All actors concerned in the region:


Simple citizens, elected people, Officials, associations, technical and financial partners

WHAT RESULTS HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED?

Organized crime is decreasing (the region became a green zone while it was a red one before)
The action plan for Security is implemented

Rights and taxes are respected Social cohesion is beginning to be restored


Violence is decreasing

WHAT RESULTS HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED?


Women are more visible in the social, economical and political fields Improvement of crops and production

Many women received certificates of land owning

IMPACT (BASED ON THE SADC PROTOCOL TARGETS)

Art 4-8: Constitutional Rights, affirmative action, domestic legislation, equality in accessing justice, marriage and family Rights Art 12-13: Representation and participation of women in governance Art 15-19: Economic policies, multiple roles of women and economic empowerment. Art 20-25 Support, training and integrated approaches and 28- Peace building and conflict resolution

THE PROJECT WAS EFFICIENT BECAUSE

The members of the Association is increasing and women begin to take responsibility in governance Numbers of women: 18 (Agriculture comittee) , 12 (AROPA), 8 (Chiefs of villages), 3 (Mayors), 15 (Councilors)

SUSTAINABILITY AND REPLICATION

This project can be replicated by other Associations or any individual who wants to bring his/her contribution to the development of the country

LESSONS LEARNED

The fight against violence needs collaboration between men and women and all the entities involved in the cause In order to be efficient, trainings are needed for leaders and gender activists The real factors of violence need to be known so as to find the right strategies to fight against it

Working on development projects is already fighting against violence
