Ap chem lab write up

Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to determine the identity of an unknown metal through physical properties. Introduction: Every substance has physical properties and some physical properties are helpful to determine substances. Density and specific heat are examples of physical properties that help scientist determine certain substances, but texture, color, volume, and mass wouldnt be as helpful. In this lab you will be given an unknown metal, and you will determine its identity by calculating its density and its specific heat without changing the size or shape of the unknown metal. DENSITY: D = m/v (units g/cm^3) SPECIFIC HEAT: q = m*C*(delta)AT (units J/Kg) (C=q(of metal)/mass(metal)*(delta)T (metal)) Heat gained by water = heat gained by metal

Specific Heat for Aluminum: 0.900 j/kg Specific Heat for Brass: 0.380 j/Kg Lead: 0.128j/Kg Iron: 0.44 j/Kg

Density: 2.7g/cm^3 Density: 8.4g/cm^3 Density: 11.34g/cm^3 Density: 7.874g/cm^3

Pre Lab Questions: 1. What octane was the gas used in the jet that crashed into the World Trade Center? 2. Solve for the density element x if the mass is 34 g and the volume is 50. 3. Calculate the percent error of aluminum is the theoretical value is .30 J/Kg and the accepted value is 0.903 J/Kg.

Unknown Metal

Part A Density 1.) Weigh the unknown metal to find the mass. 2.) Record in Data table. 3.) Fill a 50-ml graduate cylinder to 25-ml. 4.) Record initial volume of water. 5.) Place the unknown metal into the graduated cylinder. 6.) Record final volume. 7.) Calculate Density of the unknown metal. (Show work) 8.) Record Data. Part B Specific Heat 1.) Put you unknown metal on a balance to weigh it. 2.) Record data table. 3.) Fill a test tube with about of water. Then place your unknown metal inside the test tube. 4.) Then fill the Styrofoam cup with 100ml of water. Add the thermometer and record initial temperature. (at roomtemp = 25C) Density of water = 0.99 g/ml. 5.) Use the density of the water to determine the mass of water from the volume. 6.) Record Mass and Volume in data table. 7.) Heat the water in test tube to a boil. 8.) Gently remove the unknown metal from the test tube (after boiling) and place it in the Styrofoam cup, and cover it. 9.) Record temperature when it has reached a stopping point. (water + metal) 10.) Calculate specific heat of the unknown metal. 11.) Calculate percent error.

Safety: Protective goggles. Lab apron. Keep all loose clothing, and long hair away from flames.
