Step 1
1. In the Gizmo, click on a snail and drag it into a test tube, either in the Light room or the Dark
room.
2. Drag the remaining snails and sprigs of Elodea into test tubes of your choice. (You can add more
than one organism to a test tube.) DO NOT START THE SIMULATION YET!!
1. What gas do you think will be produced by the snail? _____________________
2. What color change will this trigger in the brom thymol blue?
____________________________________________________________________________
3. What gas will be produced by the Elodea plant in the light?
____________________________________________________________________________
4. What color change will this trigger in the brom thymol blue?
____________________________________________________________________________
5. What do you think will happen for a plant in the dark?
____________________________________________________________________________
6. In this table describe the contents of each test tube, and fill in the starting colors. Under
Predicted Color, write your hypothesized color change for each test tube in the experiment.
Step 2
Click Play ( ) and observe the color changes over a 24-hour period (simulated time). Fill in the
Final Color column in your table.
7. Based on the results, what gas was produced by a plant in the light? __________A snail in the
light? _________________
8. What gas was produced by a plant in the dark?__________________ A snail in the dark?

9. From your answer to the previous question, what condition is necessary for plants to produce
oxygen?

Step 3
1. Click Clear test tubes.
2. Continue experimenting with combinations of plants and snails until you are satisfied that you
have tried the most important combinations. Record all hypotheses and results. Based on your
experiments, what combinations yield the most rapid increases in oxygen concentration?
__________Carbon dioxide concentration? ____________ Why do you think this is so?

10. Suppose a closed test tube containing an Elodea sprig and a snail were left in a lighted room for
several days. Would the snail and the plant survive? _________ Why or why not?

11. Did the snail produce different results in the light and in the dark?_______________________
How about the plant? _________________________Explain your answer and discuss it with
your classmates. Was this what you expected? Explain your results in a scientific manner.
Support your claim with data from the table and state your reasoning in complete sentences.
