This is the final Guidance BLAST of the year. Have a safe and relaxing summer. ALL STUDENTS (New) Changes to ACT Registration: Beginning the 2012-2013 school year, ACT will require registrants to submit a photo ID electronically as part of the registration process. Students will still need to have a picture ID when they check into their testing site. For more information on this change, please see the article at http://www.act.org/newsroom/announce/testprocedures.html (New) Make Your Summer Count: All students are encouraged to make their summer count! We encourage all students to volunteer over the summer, especially in areas that might help to determine individual skills and interests. Counselors also encourage all students to participate in a job shadow day. Summer is a perfect time to learn about a possible career of interest by actually following in the footsteps of an individual in your field of interest. (New) Summer Legal Institute: A Summer Legal Institute is being held in Indianapolis July 9-13, 2012 at the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law on the campus of IUPUI. Sponsored by Just The Beginning Foundation, a non-profit service organization dedicated to improving the legal system, this week-long program introduces underrepresented high school students to the legal system, exposes them to careers in the law, and provides them with practical tools for achieving their education goals. Students work with judges, lawyers, and law students on legal reasoning, case analysis, writing, negotiation, and oral argument exercises. In addition, students and their families receive college preparatory advice on such topics as preparing for standardized tests, completing applications, and securing financial aid. This is a free program but an application is required. Applications are available directly from Mrs. Hall in the guidance area or on-line at www.jtbf.org Military Academy Days: Sen. Coats will be hosting a Military Academy Day to provide students who are interested in attending a military academy an opportunity to learn more above the academies and the scholarships available through these institutions. The program will consist of formal presentations from each of the academies, an overview of the application and nominations process, and an informal question and answer session. The central Indiana day is scheduled for June 23, 2012 at the Franklin National Guard Armory (325 Minuteman Way; Franklin, IN) from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Representatives from the following academies will be present: Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, Military Academy at West Point (Army), and the Naval Academy. Senator Dan Coats at 317-554-0750 or academyinfo@coats.senate.gov Creative Summer Camp: The University of Findlay in Ohio is hosting writing, design, theatre, and video camps this summer for students ages 15-18. The creative camps will be held July 2-22 from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. This is a day camp only. The cost is $150 and covers meals, snacks, T-shirt, materials, and the final project. College Planning Website: Collegeboard has developed a new website that students and parents may find helpful and interesting. The site has information on college planning, careers, financial assistance, and videos that provide insight into those areas. There is also a section for parents. The site is www.bigfuture.org Miss Indiana Teen USA: Contestants are being accepted for the preliminary Miss Teen USA Pageant. The pageant will be held Oct. 13 & 14, 2012 and will offer over $350,000 in college scholarships. Females must be 14-19 (by Feb. 1, 2013) years of age and will compete in three categories: personal interview, swimsuit, and evening gown. There is no talent performance phase of the competition. To apply access enroll@pageantassociates.com and include one jpeg file photo of yourself plus the following information: your full name, date of birth, complete mailing address, telephone number, and the name of your counselor. If you cannot submit an email, there are applications in the guidance carousel. The deadline for applying is July 1, 2012. Summer School: Students who need to enroll in a summer school class are encouraged to contact their counselor. Summer school options are very limited, and all require your counselor's approval in order to register. Please note that the registration deadline for Indiana Online academy is May 31, 2012. Nursing Information: The Indiana University School of Nursing (IUSON), along with St. Vincent MICIAHEC and Eta Chi Chapter, Chi Eta Phi Sorority will host the 2nd Annual Breaking the Myths of Nursing program on Thursday, June 21 and Friday, June 22, 2012 at the IUSON. This program will provide students in grades 9-12 with an intellectual and unique hands-on experience to learn about the field of nursing and about college. There is a $10 deposit which will cover both days including lunch and materials. All students must attend both days of the program. All high school students interested in nursing are welcome to attend. A flyer and registration forms are available in the guidance carousel. School of Informatics: IUPUI will offer summer workshops in the following area: 1. Using Flash to create a video game (June 11-15) 2. Exploring the Art of Video Game Design (June 18-22) 3. Attack of the Giant Photoshop (July 16-20 4. Video Boot camp (July 23-27) 5. Web Design for Beginning Webmasters (june 4-8 and June 25-29) Cost for one workshop is $170; two workshops--$160 each; three workshops--$150 each; and any 4 or 5 workshops--$140 each. Students entering, currently in or graduation from grades 9-12 are invited to participate. Marion County Fair Queen Pageant: The Marion County Fair Board is seeking interested females who would like to compete in the pageant. Applicants must by 16-20 years of age (by June 20, 2012), Marion County residents and United States citizens. Candidates will be judged on beauty, poise, personality, communication skills, overall impression and stage presence. Each contestant must be an active member of at least one worthwhile organization in her community; i.e., church groups, Girl Scouts, 4-H, community service organizations, etc. Eligibility is not limited to 4-H members. Applications and additional information are available in the guidance carousel. Applications must be submitted by June 1 but only the first 38 applications will be accepted. The candidate crowned as Queen will be award a $1,000 scholarship.

There are many summer programs that offer students the opportunity to study on campus in a variety of disciplines. http://roncalli.org/uploads/summeropportunites.pdf (New) College Corner Baldwin-Wallace College soon to be Baldwin Wallace University Founded by John Baldwin in 1845 in Berea, Ohio (just outside Cleveland) the College was one of the first in Ohio to admit students without regard to race or gender. In 1913 Baldwin College merged with German Wallace College to become Baldwin-Wallace College. In July 2012 the College will become Baldwin Wallace University. B-W is a liberal arts institution that enrolls around 3,000 students in sixty majors. The top ten programs are business, education, music, psychology, biology, English, criminal justice, pre-medicine, communication and health and physical education. The mid-fifty percent range on the SAT Critical Reading is 480-600 while the mid-fifty percent range on the math is 480-590. The mid-range ACT score is 21-26. Over 82% of enrolled students receive scholarships and more than 90% of students earning degrees complete their degree in four years or less! B-W has an amazing music conservatory program that offers six Bachelor of Music degrees, a Bachelor in Music Education and a Bachelor of Arts, along with a major or minor in Music. Conservatory information can be found at: http://bw.edu/admission/undergraduate/conservatory/ B-W has the largest collection (in North America) of Bach manuscripts in their Riemenschneider Bach Institute including some written in Bachs own hand. The Yellow Jackets of B-W host twelve mens and eleven womens athletic teams that compete in NCAA Division 3. Renovations are occurring throughout campus this summer as a new welcome center nears completion while renovations to residence halls and to the former Cleveland Browns training site which becomes the training site for B-W athletes. The College's campus-wide commitment to sustainability can be seen in its wind turbine, recycling efforts, and its five geothermal fieldsincluding the first for a residence hallto heat and cool campus buildings. SENIORS: Final Transcripts: Seniors are reminded that final transcripts are required by colleges and universities in order to officially enroll a student for classes next fall. Each senior must request the mailing of the transcript on-line from www.parchment.com If you have not requested the mailing of a final transcript on www.parchment.com, your college/university enrollment will be delayed. Please take care of requesting a final transcript by Friday, May 25. This can be done at www.parchment.com If you have difficulty accessing parchment.com, try the 'forgot password' method first, then contact your counselor if you still cannot access the system.

Remember that college enrollment is based on your final transcript and colleges must have the official transcript in their possession. This is the individual students responsibility to handle. Commencement Portraits: Lifetouch will photograph each senior as they receive their diploma during the graduation ceremony. Those photos will be available online at events.lifetouch.com one week after the ceremony. A complimentary photo will be available as a gift from Roncalli High School about two weeks after graduation. There is no obligation to purchase any of the photos. The liturgy is followed by the presentation of senior awards. Cap and gown is required for the Baccalaureate. May 26: Graduationseniors arrive by 8:30 a.m. and report to the cafeteria in cap and gown. Grades: Seniors are reminded of the importance of staying current in their grades. Colleges will review final transcripts in June and July and if grades decrease significantly, the colleges have been known to retract their offer of admission and scholarship. Graduation Information: http://www.roncalli.org/guidance/graduation-guide JUNIORS, SOPHOMORES, and FRESHMEN EXPLORER POSTS offer great opportunities to gain some real life information and field trips about a variety of careers. During the month of April, all students in grades 9 - 11 will complete a short paper survey to express career and hobbies of interest. Businesses who offer this career exploration opportunity will send an invitation to those students who have expressed an interest in their career. Look for these invitations over the summer and give serious consideration to registering! Many students have shared positive experiences from these opportunities. Examples of career fields: health careers, firefighters, business, science, computers, architecture, legal profession, law enforcement and more. These programs are offered by Eli Lilly, Methodist Hospital and other reputable companies and organizations in the area. EXPLORER POSTS letters will arrive over the summer. The return address may be a business or organization that sponsors the post. Be sure to read it and consider the opportunity to participate in a hands-on experience with a career of possible interest! Summer college tours: Take advantage of your family vacation or other travel time to visit colleges over the summer to see what they are like. Even if you have no interest in attending the college you are visiting, it will help you learn what to look for in a college. We encourage students to visit a large public, mid-size (815,000) institution, and a private institution. Ask questions (sample questions can be found in the Document Library of College and Career Connections), read the student newspaper, and visit a residence hall. This will be time well spent JUNIORS: (New) Scholarship for Women: The National Foundation for Women Legislators and the National Rifle Association are co-sponsoring the annual academic scholarship contest for young women who are high school juniors. Seven winners will receive a $3,000 college scholarship award and will be invited to attend the NFWLs annual conference where they will have the opportunity to learn about public policy, receive leadership training, and network with lawmakers from across the country. Applicants must submit an essay entitle The Constitution and States Rights: How Federalism Impacts Women and Historically Underrepresented Populations. (New) Dependents of Disabled Veterans: The dependents of disabled American veteran are eligible for a remission of fees and free tuition at state universities in Indiana. For more information on this program www.in.gov/dva.index.htm Grandchildren may also qualify for this program. Purdue University applications: Are you thinking about applying to Purdue University next year? If so, the essay choices just went on-line today at: http://www.admissions.purdue.edu/apply_now/personal_statement.html Give yourself a jumpstart on application process by drafting your essay over the summer. IUPUI: Juniors, do you know that IUPUI has an Honors College for high ability students? The program is highlighted by a mentoring program and a separate facility on campus for admitted students to gather. Multiple scholarships are available through the Honors College including the Bepko (20 awards), Herbert (15), Plater (10), and the Chancellor (200) scholarships. Many of the scholarships include a study abroad option and a stipend of $2500 for the study abroad experience. Deadlines for these scholarships are Nov. 15 (Plater, Bepko, and Herbert) and December 1 for the Chancellor Scholarship. SOPHOMORES and FRESHMEN: Summer: Summer is a great time to research career options either electronically or by actually shadowing someone in a career field of interest. By walking in someone elses shoes for only three or four hours, students will gain an understanding of the responsibilities and roles of an individual who is employed in an area of possible interest. Students are encouraged to brain-storm possible shadow options with their parents and other family members. Summer shadowing is time well spent. Resume: Now is a good time to review your year and add the activities in which you participated to the resume section of College and Career Connections.
