    May 24, 2012 Media Release Re: Auburn Man Arrested for Rape

    On Thursday May 24, 2012 at approximately 12:34am Auburn Police were dispatched to a home located on the west end of the City of Auburn for the complaint of an unwanted person at the home. Upon arrival Officers interviewed the victim who told them that she was the victim of a sexual assault and that the perpetrator, an acquaintance of hers was still in her home sleeping. Officers did enter the home and found the defendant hiding in a closet on the first floor of the home. The suspect was subsequently taken into custody without incident. The police investigation revealed that the defendant, Ponel E. Jackson Sr. did contact the victim by phone and asked to speak with her at a location on Genesee St. The victim reported that she went to the location and Jackson was not there so she returned to her home and was approached by Jackson as she arrived home. It is alleged that Jackson pressured the victim into letting him into her home. Once inside the home Jackson is alleged to have forcibly raped the victim and obstructing her breathing during the rape by squeezing her neck with his hands during the rape. The victim reported that after the incident Jackson fell asleep and at that point she was able to flee the home and make a call to a friend for help who in turn called and reported the incident to police. Jackson was subsequently arrested for rape 1st, criminal possession of a weapon 3rd as he was in possession of a knife at the time of the incident. He was also charged with criminal obstruction of breathing and unlawful possession of marijuana. He was processed and held in the Auburn Police Department jail pending his arraignment in Auburn City Court this morning. No other details will be released concerning the location of the incident in order to protect the identity of the victim of this sexual assault. Jackson is a lifetime registered level three sex offender in New York State stemming from a 1993 Rape 3rd conviction.
