The new measures will be implemented for workers (E-9 visa holders) from 15 labor-exporting countries under the Employment Permit System (EPS), which will apply not only to workers who finish their working period of 4 years and 10 months but also to foreign workers who complete 6 years* of employment in Korea under the previous code. Foreign migrant workers must meet the following requirements to benefit from the new system: First, they must not have changed their workplace during their period of employment (4 years & 10 months / 6 years). In the case of involuntary changes in employment due to shut-down or closure of factories, foreign workers must have worked for at least 1 year for their most recent employer. Second, workers must have worked in the agro-livestock, fishery, or manufacturing industries for companies employing less than 30 workers. Under the Root Industry Promotion Act, foreign workers are still eligible for the EPS if they have worked for manufacturing companies with less than 50 workers participating in Root Industries. Third, foreign workers' employment contracts must expire after July 2nd, which is the date the new Act will go into effect. 1 month to 7 days before the conclusion of an eligible foreign worker's employment contract, employers can apply for employment permits on their employees' behalf at local employment centers. When applying, employers must submit a copy of a new employment contract for a period of more than 1 year (a standard employment contract) that will go into effect when the worker re-enters the ROK and begins working. Foreign workers who are eligible for the new measures do not need to take a Korean Language Test for re-entry to Korea and are also exempted from employment education before and after coming to Korea. They can return to Korea 3 months after having returned to their home countries, and will work in their previous workplaces. Through this system, employers do not need to find domestic workers and can hire foreign workers who have re-entered the ROK without being constrained by new employment limits on business. (Businesses can currently hire only a limited number of foreign workers) On the other hand, foreign workers who are not eligible to participate in the new Employment Act due to having changed workplaces will have to take a special Korean Language Test to determine their eligibility to return to the ROK 6 months after having returned to their home countries. This special Korean Language Test will only be given to workers who plan to return to Korea and will be held 4 times a year (on a quarterly basis) for each labor-exporting country. Currently the Korean Language Test is offered in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Pakistan. It will be offered additionally in Uzbekistan, Philippines, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Mongolia, and Nepal starting in the third quarter of 2012. (Test availability will be expanded to to other countries as soon as possible) Issue No. 802

By Yi Whan-woo foreign wife who was charged with attempting to murder her Korean mother-in-law was sentenced to a three years jail term suspended for five years, Monday. The Gwangju District Court also ordered the 24-year-old Vietnamese housewife to 320 hours of community service, 40 hours of psychotherapy and three-year probation in a trial by jury. Attempting to kill a family member is totally unacceptable for any reason regardless of ones nationality, a judge said. However, the language barrier was the main cause of the conflict in this case. The court accepts the verdict of the jury that deemed active communication between the accused and her family would be the solution rather than sending the accused directly to prison. The woman moved to Gwangju after getting married to a 36-year-old Korean man in 2009. The woman has had conflicts since then with her mother-in-law who lived with them. The foreign wife was resentful about her mother-in-laws complaints and for picking on her for petty matters such as meeting her friends and making phone calls. The daughter-in-law then put rat poison on the 69-year-old mother-in-laws meal in August 2011 but this failed to kill her as the color of the white rice turned blue. She apologized, but the mother-in-law, whose name was not released, was still angry at her foreign daughter-in-law. I just cant imagine how I can face someone who tried to kill me, and I hope she goes back to Vietnam, the 69-year-old woman said. yistory@koreatimes.co.kr

How to be a good parent: top 10 tips

Gurgle Mon, Apr 16, 2012 7:00 AM PHT ne of the nicest things about being a parent is that regardless of the circumstances of your own childhood, the moment you go from being a girl or guy to being a parent, you suddenly get it. That amazing feeling of exactly what its like to love something more than anything. Here are Gurgles top ten tips on how to be a good parent 1.Be involved in your child's life. Being involved fully in your childs life can be hard work, and more often than not means rethinking and rearranging your priorities. Lots of parents feel they dont spend enough time with their children or that they have to sacrifice what they do for what the child wants. Its important to get the balance right; if you work all week and cant imagine a weekend looking after the children and need some downtime yourself, make sure you make time for both. Take the children to the park, ice creams, read to them , spending quality time together but say mummy/daddy needs an hour to catch up on emails/football etc to get the balance right. 2.Establish and set rules. Make sure you and your partner stick to the same rules. Its no good if Daddy comes home and lets the children have chocolate buttons after Mum has said they are only allowed a certain amount of chocolate if they are good! Establishing some family rules with your children is a great way to communicate your expectations and be consistent in your parenting. Make sure there are no more than 35 house rules as too many can seem like lists and lists of rules which children would soon find tedious. 3.Avoid harsh discipline. Many people use the same tactics their own parents used, and a lot of times that meant using really harsh discipline which can make children angrier and either more enclosed or more likely to take it out on others. Sometimes being a parent can make you very frustrated, especially when you have a whinging whining child (for no reason) and the child will not reason with you. The best thing to do in this circumstance is try not to make an issue out of the whinging by not getting cross. Laughing

during a tense moment can ease the pressure off you and may even make the child stop the tantrum when they realise it really doesnt work. Take a moment to stop, breathe, count to ten and carry on as normal with what you are doing. Your child will hopefully get the point that you are not interested in the tantrum and you can make light of it. 4.Explain your rules and decisions. Always explain your rules and decisions so that your children know exactly why you are punishing/praising them and they can learn from this. For example, Lucy, I am not going to give you your pudding until you finish your broccoli because you have to eat up your dinner before you can go on and have a desert, rather than a simple no. 5.Treat your child with respect Sometimes its difficult to understand the sheer dependency and enormity of raising children and parents do often view them as small beings who really should be grateful, have less tantrums, stop whinging, and stop arguing with their siblings etc. These are all ideal types of behaviour which we would love children to understand, but in truth, the ungratefulness, tantrums, whinging and so on, can be down to parents barking orders all day long, ignoring common courtesies toward the child, and in defiance, children ignore the parents altogether. The best approach would be to treat your child as respectfully as you yourself would like to be treated. 6.Help them feel safe It is very important for children to feel safe and this can start at home by hanging family portraits around the house, or pictures of them with their siblings in their bedrooms -a great way of giving them a sense of belonging. Try not to argue with your spouse in front of the children. If they are sleeping, argue quietly. Children may feel insecure and fearful when they hear parents bickering. Also, children will learn to argue with each other the same way as they hear their parents argue with each other. The best way to deal with this is to show them that when people disagree, they can discuss their differences peacefully. 7.Do Something Familiar. Children love routine and ritual, and if there is a special thing you and your children love doing, make time to make it part of your day/ week. A particular story you always read before

bedtime or something you always say to them before they go to bed. Children love the repetition of something lovely and will remember these little loving moments as they get older. 8.Read together No matter whether you have a tiny baby or a wriggly toddler, they all love to be read to. You may need to adapt what you read slightly, more colourful bold books for babies, and simple, funny or sweet stories for toddlers. A 4-5 year old will be able to handle slightly more complex story and interesting illustrations. Reading with your child creates a perfect bonding time together. 9.Find out one important thing about your childs day. Although this really applies to slightly older children, finding something important about what they did at nursery or the childminders or even if they had a day out with daddy, is very important. It shows that you are interested in what they do and involved in their world. As they get older this can work as they may tell you the good things but also comfortable enough to tell you their worries and fears. 10. Dont worry about the previous nine items. Just when you think youre doing ok as a parent, then along comes an article like this one to make you feel like you are not doing the job right!? Of course, thats not the point. All the goals weve listed are worth aiming for, but no one will ever accomplish all of them, every day. So dont beat yourself up trying to do the impossible. If expectations seem to high, be realistic about it and try not to judge yourself against other parents remember they are probably feeling like you do as well. A good way to look at how to become a good parent, is to try and enjoy the time you have with your little ones. Take a step back, take a breath, look at these little people you have created and spend time with them. Its these moments with your children that make them feel loved. Leave the washing for another few minutes, have that chat with a friend on the phone a bit later and take those extra moments to spend with your children.

Is it required that Catholics be devoted to Mary?

Full Question
Is it required that Catholics be devoted to Mary?

How can Mary be God's Mother, but not the Mother of the Trinity?
Full Question
Saying that Mary is the Mother of God sounds like saying she is the source of Jesus' divinity and the Mother of the Trinity. How should I understand this?

Answer
Devotion is an emotional attachment, which cannot be required of anyone. All that is required is assent to those doctrines that the Church has declared to be true and binding upon Catholic consciences. As long as a Catholic gives assent of the will to the Marian doctrines, it is not required that he have any particular emotional attachment to the Blessed Mother. That said, devotion can be developed just like emotional attachment to any person can be developed, and it is a pious action for a Catholic to develop a devotion to his spiritual Mother. One means of developing such an attachment is to learn more about the Blessed Mother through reading Marian apologetic and devotional literature.

Answer
Understood correctly, the title Mother of God (Greek: Theotokos, "God-bearer") does not mean that Mary is the source of Christs divine nature, nor does it mean Mary is the Mother of the Father or the Holy Spirit. It means Mary is Mother of the person of Jesus, who is God: The One whom [Mary] conceived as man by the Holy Spirit, who truly became her Son according to the flesh, was none other than the Fathers eternal Son, the second person of the Holy Trinity. Hence the Church confesses that Mary is truly "Mother of God." (CCC 495)

But this was really fun, especially when you are with a friend whom you can rely on. I am so grateful that I found a friend like her, Best Mary as I call her. Our friendship started in Hongkong. But we were not that close then because we have our own friends. Later on, as we both left Hongkong with our employers who migrated to Korea, we got to have more time to hang out together. Here is one lesson I learned, do not judge a person until you get to know them more. At first, medyo ilag at inis talaga ako sa kanya kasi lagi niya ako kinokontra. But at the end, I understand and see the real her. I am thankful, kasi kahit mas matanda ako sa kanya, she is more matured to make decisions. I always seek her advice first, at higit sa lahat hindi siya clumsy like me. Thank you, Best Mary, for all the patience and understanding. I hope our friendship will last longer kahit wala na tayo sa Korea.

For the Love of Mom

By: Melody Palana Favor is deceitful and beauty is vain; but a woman feareth the Lord, she shall be praised Proverbs 31:30 remembered a story that captured my heart, but I honestly forgot where I read it. It was about a mother's love for her child. She was blind and a single mom who raised her son by herself. But her son was so ungrateful. He never saw what his mom did for him despite her situation; instead he was so ashamed of what she looked like and of her incapability to be with other normal mother. He mocked, ignored and made her feel unwanted and unloved. He distanced himself from this woman. He succeeded and had his own family. One day, this woman whom he took for granted for a long time knocked at his door. But when he opened it, he was startled. His children mocked the woman at the door, and he denied knowing her. He was upset and told her not to bother his family again. She asked forgiveness and told him that she perhaps approached the wrong house and went away. A week later, his mom died, leaving him a letter that contained her great love for him. In the letter, his mom recalled that he was so sick when he was young that he lost his eyesight. But she gave up her eyes for him. Her blindness never hindered her from watching over him as he grew up, praying for him all through his life. But he never recognized his mothers sacrifices for he was so busy despising her. After knowing all these, tears flowed and regrets shattered his heart. But he could not bring his mom back to life to tell her that he loved her. Most of the time, we are like this son. We easily jump into conclusions just because we are unaware of the real reasons behind our parents shortcomings. I was once like that with my mom. I was a bit rebellious for she had no time for us. I overlooked the fact that she was helping my father raised us up, six siblings. I was so ashamed with myself after having realized everything. But at least now, God gave me another chance to love her in return. Thank God, He created the words "another chance. I saw the suffering of mothers who are working abroad. They gave up their own happiness and the chance to be with their loved ones in order to put food on their table back home, to pay the tuitions and to sustain the family needs. Unfortunately, oftentimes, children may not understand and appreciate all these efforts. Good thing is even how many times we fall from the trap of persecuting or blaming others without knowing the reasons for their limitations, God never ever judges us. Instead, He always gives us forgiveness, room for regrets and chances to mend our mistakes. The mothers love for her child in the story was so immense, just like God's love for us. To all mothers out there, a blessed Mother's day!

The Motherhood of Mary

By: Emely Dicolen-Abagat The dignity of women can only be measured by the order of love. Mulieris Dignitatem (MD), 29 Motherhood, a Vocation of Love Vocation is defined as a call that the Lord places in our hearts, to find love and dedicate oneself to the service of love. It implies total surrender of self for the greatest cause of love. Motherhood is a vocation because it is also a call to dedicate oneself to the service of love and it requires a total surrender of self for the greater cause of love - a self-donation. This self-donation is part of Gods plan. In Gods eternal plan, woman is the one in whom the order of love in the created world of persons takes first root. (MD 29) In Gods plan, he made the body and heart of a woman, and all her being to manifest her self-donation in two ways: being a SPOUSE and being a MOTHER. she must be washable, but not made of plastic, .have more than 200 moving parts which all must be replaceable, .and she must function on all kinds of food, she must be able to embrace several kids at the same time, .give a hug that can heal anything from a bruised knee to a broken heart, and she must do all these with only two hands. Motherhood, a Sacrificial Love According to Mulieris Dignitatem (18-19), motherhoods essence consists in the complete laying down of self in order to bring forth, nourish, and enhance the life of another. It requires the expansion of the heart, from selfishness towards an option to love. The Blessed Virgin Mary is the best example of the sacrificial love a mother has. Marys heart was mystically pierced, when, at the foot of the cross, he saw her Sons heart being pierced by the sword. At that very moment, Mary was called to a new maternity, to be the mother of the Church. Mothers sacrifice a lot for their children from conception, as the kids are growing up, as the children become adults- the mothers love is unconditional. A mother cries when her kids are hurt, a mothers heart is pierced when she scolds her kids for she knows that is best for them, but Marys example is always her guide. She kept all these things in her heart. Motherhood, at the Threshold of Redemption The salvation of the world was made possible through Mary. The angels announcement Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus (Lk 1:31), and Marys fiat Behold the handmaid of the Lord be it done unto me according to your word (Lk 1:38) clearly manifests our salvation. In our times, there is a great challenge required from all of us, mothers. Mothers, wives, women of the Church, you are the bearers of the civilization of love! The babe in your arms, the little ones who cling to you and gather around you, these are called to be tomorrows civilization of love. That questioning child, the teenager seeking his or her identity and asking for affirmation, they already stand on the threshold of that civilization. But what will it be a civilization of life and love or a civilization of death and hatred. It depends on you. (His Eminence Alfonso Cardinal Lopez Trujillo, 10th Annual Conference of Women for Faith and Family, 1994) Personally, this is a very challenging call and committing to it is requires much conviction on my part. However, with the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of all Mothers and by her example of trust in the Lord, perseverance, holiness, piety, and humility, and with the guidance of her Son, everything will be possible.
A talk delivered in a Prayer Vigil held at the Philippine Center, Seoul, South Korea on the 5th of May 2012.

You worry now Are they ok? Is there more you could have done? As we walk the paths of our unknown You wonder Where have my children gone? Where we are is where you have led us, With your special love you showed us a way, To believe in ourselves and the decisions we make Taking on the challenge of life day-to-day. And where we go you can be sure In spirit you shall never be alone. For where you are is what matters most to us, Because to us that will always be home.

The Lamb's Supper: The Bible and the Mass

Lesson Five: Heaven On Earth: The Liturgy of the Eucharist
(cont)
(Editors note: This is the 13th part of the Online Bible Study course on the subject taken from the website of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Studies http://www.salvationhistory.com/)

II. The Liturgy in Heaven

A. Caught Up in the Spirit The biblical story told to us in the Scripture readings for the Mass and summarized in the Creed reaches its goal"in the Mass. All the history recorded in Scripture, all that it reveals about the one God"and His only Son, was intended to lead us to the moment of communion with God, through the breaking of the bread(see Luke 24:35). In the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we see the culmination of biblical history right in front of us on the altar. We lift up our hearts"to heaven and are, in a real sense, caught up in spirit"and taken into a liturgy thats always going on in heaven (see Revelation 4:2). Thats what was revealed to the Apostle John in the Bibles last book. In fact, its the Mass that makes sense of the puzzling, and often frightening visions and symbols of Revelation. Whats revealed to John is that the Mass we celebrate on earth is a participation in the liturgy of heaven. Johns vision begins on the Lords day,Sunday (see Revelation 1:10) - the name the first Christians gave to the first day of the week, upon which they celebrated the breaking of the bread(see Acts 20:7; Luke 24:1). John is caught up in spirit on the Lords Day.In other words, possibly while celebrating the Eucharist himself, John is taken to heaven. And John sees the same things we see when we come to Mass. He sees an altar (see Revelation 8:3); candles (1:12); incense (5:8); priests dressed in robes (4:4). And he sees bread or manna (2:17), and bowls or chalices of blood (see Revelation 16). He sees heavenly worshippers angels and saints crying, Holy, Holy, Holy(4:8), singing a hymn to the glory of God, the heavenly king (15:3) and shouting alleluia(19:1,3,6) and making the sign of the cross on their foreheads (14:1). There are readings from Scripture (Revelation 2-3), and, finally, the wedding feast of the Lamb(19:9). B. The Mass Revealed in Revelation In fact, there are many more similarities between the Book of Revelation and the Mass. Notice, that the book itself is written with the intention that it will be read during the liturgy (see Revelation 1:3).And the book is divided into two parts that roughly correspond to the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist in todays Mass. The first eleven chapters are concerned with the reading of letters, to be written on a scroll by John who gives witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ by reporting what he saw at the dictation of one like a son of man(see Revelation 1: 2,11-13). The one like a son of man" is Jesus Christ, who often referred to himself as Son of

Man (see, Matthew 25:31, Mark 8:31, Luke 12:8, John 3:13). That image, in turn, takes us back to the vision of Daniel, in which One like a son of man comes in glory on the clouds and receives an everlasting dominion from God (see Daniel 7:13-14). But Revelation also identifies Jesus by name: the name by which He is called is the Word of God (see Revelation 19:13). John is the human author of this Scripture. But the Scripture has a divine author, too, the Word of God. Significantly, the first three chapters of Revelation begin the book as the Mass begins, with a sort of Penitential Rite. Jesus uses the word repent eight times during his seven letters (see Revelation 2:16). And when the Word of God has been proclaimed, the Son declares: Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, (then) I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with Me (see Revelation 3:20). With this invitation to dine with Christ himself, the heavenly Liturgy of the Word gives way to the feast of the heavenly Eucharist. As in our Mass, the liturgy of the Word in Revelation prepares us to receive the Lamb of God. All who have ears to hear are told that Jesus himself will give them hidden manna. This is a reference to the heavenly bread that God gave Israel to eat on their Exodus journey (see Psalm 78:23-25). But this heavenly bread was a sign of the bread that Christ had come to give His own body, given for the life of the world (see John 6:32-33; 4951). This is the daily bread that He had taught His disciples to pray for - in a prayer that we pray in every Mass and which we will consider in depth in our next lesson. Revelations second half begins in Chapter 11, with the opening of Gods temple in heaven, and culminates in the pouring of the seven chalices and the marriage supper of the Lamb a striking image of the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

III. Worship in the New Jerusalem

A. With the Angels and Saints John is invited to come up here (see Revelation 4:1). And we are invited to come up to heaven, as well to lift up our hearts - at the beginning of our Liturgy of the Eucharist. When we lift up our hearts, we are asked to sing with the angels and saints. This is not simply a fine expression of sentiment. As with everything else in the Mass, there is a sacramental realism at work here. At this point in the Mass, we are in a mysterious way joining our song to the song that John and the prophet Isaiah before him heard in heaven: Holy, holy, holy . . . (see Revelation 4:8; Isaiah 6:3). The second part of our song (Blessed is he . . . ) is taken from the Psalm that pilgrims to Jerusalem would sing at Passover. It was also the psalm that was sung upon Christs triumphal entry to Jerusalem (see Mark 11:10; Psalm 118:26). The biblical words give us clues to whats going on in the Mass. We have gathered around the altar not only an earthly altar, but a heavenly altar as well. We have made our way to Mount Zion, the new and heavenly Jerusalem.

This is what John saw the Lamb standing on Mount Zion (see Revelation 14:1). The Letter to the Hebrews (see Hebrews 12:22-24) likewise speaks of the Eucharistic celebration on earth as entrance into and participation in the heavenly liturgy in the new Jerusalem. In the Mass, says Hebrews, we approach Mount Zion, the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. There, we join countless angels and the assembly of the firstborn and Jesus, mediator of the new covenant and the sprinkled blood in a festal gathering or feast. These lines are filled with biblical allusions and references. It is interesting to note that the word translated assembly is the Greek word ekklesia the word for church. And notice the similarities between Hebrews description of the Massand Johns Revelation. Both see a new Jerusalem, a new Zion, the dwelling place of the Lord (see Psalm 132:1314). Both see angels and Jesus, the Lamb whose blood takes away the sin of the world. And both see a feast and a gathering of firstborn or firstfruits of those who believe in Jesus (see Revelation 14:4).And both see in this feast in the temple of heaven a sign of the new covenant wrought in the blood of Jesus (see Revelation 11:19). What these Scriptures show us is that the Mass is the summit of salvation history told in Scripture. And this is the same thing that the prayers of the Mass tell us. B. Praying Salvation History The Eucharistic Prayer of the Mass is a prayer of thanksgiving in which the gifts we offer at the altar - bread and wine, and all the works of our hands and minds - are sanctified by the power of the Holy Spirit. As with everything else in the Mass, these are biblical prayers, employing language found in the Scriptures, and also summarizing the biblical story (to read them, see Eucharistic Prayers). But they are much more than that. The Eucharistic prayers retell salvation history, but also, make us a part of that history, through the sacramental change of bread and wine into Christs body and blood. The various prefaces to the Eucharistic prayers recall for us the entire biblical story, showing us always how the whole plan of salvation recorded in the Bible reached its summit in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which we commemorate in the Mass. We see your infinite power in your loving plan of salvation, we pray in Preface of Sundays in Ordinary Time III, one of several preface options for Masses celebrated outside of special seasons such as Lent, Easter, Advent, and Christmas. This preface sketches Gods loving plan, giving us in two short lines a summary of the entire Bible: Man refused your friendship, but man himself was to restore it through Jesus Christ our Lord. Another preface heard on ordinary Sundays, Preface of Sundays in Ordinary Time VIII, also gives us a summary of salvation history, showing us how all the history of Scripture was meant to culminate in the Church and the liturgy: When your children sinned and wandered far from your friendship, you reunited them with

Breaking Through: Bearing Fruits
By Bro. Tony Sacapanio ow among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee and asked Him, Sir, we wish to see Jesus. Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. And Jesus answered them, The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. John 12:20-26

Goal: To grow in maturity and bear fruit I. Fruits of the Holy Spirit 1. Love a. Evidence of being Jesus disciples (John 13:35) b. We are to love our enemies (Matthew 5:44-46) c. Grows with the knowledge of God (Philippians 1:9) 2. Joy a. Jesus ministry was to bring joy (John 17:12-13) 3. Peace a. Salvation brings peace with God (Romans 5:1) 4. Patience a. Needs patience in the midst of trouble (Romans 12:12) b. In patience we posses our soul (Luke 21:19) 5. Kindness a. Linked with forgiving one another (Ephesians 4:32)

If Mary was free of sin, why did she go through the purification ceremony?
Full Question
Why did Mary go through the purification ceremony? She didn't need to be freed from sin.

Answer
Mary went through the post-childbirth purification ceremony for the same reason Jesus went through the post-childbirth circumcision ceremony: out of obedience to the Mosaic law. Both rites purification (ritual cleansing of the mother) and circumcision (removing the foreskin of the child)symbolized being freed from sin. Jesus and Mary underwent them not because they needed to be freed from sin but because they were Jews who followed the Mosaic law. Thats why Jesus was baptized: not because he needed it himself but to set the pattern for us to follow. St. Thomas Aquinas explains Marys purification ceremony in this way: As the fullness of grace flowed from Christ on to his Mother, so it was becoming that the Mother should be like her Son in humility: for "God giveth grace to the humble," as is written James 4:6. (Summa Theologiae III:37:4)

6. Goodness 7. Faithfulness 8. Gentleness (Meekness) Power under control Answered by 9. Self Control (Temperance) Peggy Frye EXHORTATION: www.catholic.com A. Stop being like Children (1 Corinthians 14:20) Mga kapatid, huwag kayong mga isip bata. C. By now you ought to be teachers (Hebrews 5:12) In 1 Corinthians 3:1-4 says, jealousy and quarreling means you are still infants. We are to grow in witnessing as light and salt and leading others to Christ. II. Conditions of Bearing Fruit a. Die to old nature to be spiritually alive. (John 12:24) Self Denial (Luke 9:23) b. Must have understanding of the word we hear (Matthew 13:23) c. We must dwell with Christ and Christ in us. (John 15:5) From not being broken is a fearful thing. It is the spirit of satan, whose nature is incurable pride that can forever resist God. Gods greatest concern is not our sin, for He dealt with that on the cross, but the hardness of our hearts. That is Gods greatest problem, the root of all our troubles. Self denial is to renounce the right to do our own thing or to go over our own way even if it is not sinful. It is a refusal to be a bond slave. It need not be committing sin. Self denial is denying oneself the right to do our own thing and go your own way. It is giving your will over to the Lord to choose your way for you. It is not my right to chose. I have denied myself that right. I have been bought with a price. If He would not die for me and accepted me, I would die in hell. He, therefore has all the rights to me. But He does not want my service o legal rights. He wants it on the basis of love so He has given me a will to chose out of love to surrender (deny) myself to Him.

yourself through the blood of your Son and the power of the Holy Spirit. You gather them into your Church . . . call them to be your people . . . make them the body of Christ and the dwelling-place of the Holy Spirit. Eucharistic Prayer IV provides an entire history of the world beginning with Gods forming of men and women in his own likeness and their loss of his friendship through disobedience. The prayer continues to outline Old Testament history - Gods offering of covenants to mankind to help all men seek and find Him; the promise of salvation delivered through the prophets. In the fullness of time, the prayer declares, God sent His only Son. The climax of the salvation history told in the Eucharistic Prayers as in the Bible is the Last Supper. C. In Remembrance of Him As we noted in our first lesson, the words of institution in the Eucharistic Prayer are taken directly from the biblical accounts of the Last Supper, as recalled also by St. Paul (see 1 Corinthians 11:23-29;Matthew 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:15-20). And the Church, in the Eucharist, fulfills Christs command, recorded in the Scriptures:Do this in remembrance of Me.

At this point in the Eucharistic Prayer, it is significant that the priest uses the exact words of Scripture: This is My body . . . and This is the cup of My blood . . . Why is this significant? Because, as we pointed out in our first lesson, only the Word of God can do what Jesus has asked - transform bread and wine into His body and blood. Our worship can be life-transforming because the biblical Word we hear is not a human word but . . . truly is the Word of God (see 1 Thessalonians 2:13). Only the Word of God has the power to deliver what it promises, its power to bring us into communion with the true and living presence of Jesus. Only the sacred speech of God can perform the divine action of transforming bread and wine into the Body and Blood of our Lord. Only the sacred speech of God can bring us into communion with the living God. And in the Mass, we respond to this great mystery of our faith in words also drawn from Scripture. The memorial acclamations (Christ has died . . .) are also biblical prayers. With Paul, we affirm that when we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim His death until He comes (see 1 Corinthians 11:26). We also affirm that by dying and rising, He destroyed

death (see 1 Corinthians 15:26) and that He will come again (see John 14:3). He is indeed, the savior of the world (see John 4:42; 1 John 4:14).

IV. Discussion Questions

Name two or three examples of how the Creed we profess at Mass quotes or evokes the Bible. What is the biblical precedent for making a confession of faith following the hearing of Gods word? When we lift up our hearts in the Mass, where are we lifting them up to? Name some examples of how the Book of Revelation reveals the heavenly liturgy? How do the Eucharistic Prayers, and their prefaces, function in the Mass? What is the summit of salvation history, as that history is recounted and summarized in the Eucharistic Prayers?

For personal reflection:

Do we listen intently to the words of the Mass? Do we hear the story of our own sin and redemption in the preface? Do we remember the story of our salvation in the Eucharistic prayer? To be continued

Santacruzan: The Queen of All Filipino Festivals

By Lovely Philippines he Santacruzan is known as the queen of all May-time festivals in the Philippines. Perhaps this is because the Santacruzan is held every single year all over the country. Replicated in various towns and cities, it is the highlight and culminating activity of the month-long Flores de Mayo. Flores de Mayo, as its name implies, is celebrated in May and is done to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is the time of the year when rains begin to fall after a long, dry summer season and flowers start to bloom, their fragrance wafting in the air. The Flores de Mayo was introduced by the colonizing Spaniards to the country centuries ago, during the colonization period. Traditional practices for this month include people gathering in church every afternoon to offer prayers and flowers usually ilang-ilang, sampaguita (local jasmine), and hibiscus to the Virgin Mother. The Santacruzans Religious Relevance The Santacruzan may be known for the lavishly decorated floats and characters dressed in elaborate gowns and costumes during the procession, but theres a deeply religious history behind these. In fact, each reyna or queen represents some of Christendoms most prominent figures. Popular legend says that St. Helena (Reyna Elena), who is the mother of Constantine the Great, traveled to Calvary three centuries after the death of Jesus Christ to look for His cross. At the crucifixion site, she found three crosses then asked her sick servant to lie down on them one by one. The servant got cured after touching one of these crosses, and this cross was determined to be the one used by Christ. In the Santacruzan, she is given the most prominent status and is accompanied by her son, Constantine. Some characters tell a story. Reyna Abogada, known as the protector of the oppressed and downtrodden, walks ahead of Reyna Sentenciada, the epitome of convicted innocents. The aetas, symbolizing the pagan natives, and the Reyna Mora representing Muslims and other religions before Christianity march between Reyna Bandera, who represents the advent of Christianity and Reyna Fe, who symbolizes faith. Other virtues are represented as well: * Reyna Esperanza Hope * Reyna Caridad Charity * Reyna Justicia Justice While others trace their significance from history and the bible: * Reyna Judith Judith from Pethulia who rallied her city against the Assyrians * Reyna Sheba The woman visitor of King Solomon * Reyna Esther Represents the prophet Esther * Veronica The woman of the Shroud of Turin, the one who wiped Jesus bloody face. * Tres Marias or the Three Marys: the mothers of Jesus and James and Mary Magdalene. * Samaritana The woman Jesus speaks to at the well. Some of them are purely symbolic, yet do not need further explanation, like the Ave Maria girls, the Divine Shepherdess, the Rosa Mystica and the Queen of Flowers. The Prestige During the Spanish period, priests would select sponsors, locally known as hermanas, from women belonging to wealthy and reputable families. It was deemed to be a great honor to be chosen as a hermana. So much so that many would vie for the chance to be one. It is the hermana who gets to plan the festival, decorate the church and the caroza or the carriage used for the procession, and yes, handle the expenses and the budget. The towns young and prettiest ladies are handpicked to represent the various characters called sagalas and join in the procession. Each lady or reyna is escorted by a young gentleman, and every pair march under a bamboo canopy decorated with flowers and held by two men. The most awaited character is Reyna Elena, who, as earlier mentioned, represents St. Helena, escorted by a boy representing the young Constantine. Catholic devotees join the procession and hold lit candles, recite the rosary, and sing songs of praise. Customarily, after the night mass, the mayor of the town would host a dinner gathering. The Santacruzan Today It is but natural that a parade of queens should become the queen of all festivals, and that prestige and pageantry have carried on until today. The Santacruzan has seen celebrities such as politicians and actors and actresses taking on the various characters in nationwide parades. Even homosexual men have taken to dress up for the part. Filipinos living abroad organize Filipino communities in the United States, Europe and other parts of the world to have their own Santacruzan. And no dominantly Catholic town in the Philippines is complete without a Santacruzan during the month of May, or even outside of it. No matter who the hermana is, or who the sagalas are, the Santacruzan remains to be a very vital fixture in Philippine culture. And why not, you basically have a parade of the areas prettiest glossing over the fact that it is teeming with religious significance and symbolism.

How to Apply for ePassport

UPDATE FROM THE PHILIPPINE EMBASSY

OAV Registration Ongoing at the Philippine Embassy Filipinos in South Korea who intend to vote here for the senatorial and party-list elections in May 2013 are reminded to register as overseas absentee voters at the Philippine Embassy in Seoul. Registration started on 2 November 2011 and will continue until 31 October 2012. Registration is available from Monday to Friday during regular office hours, except during declared holidays. Filipinos may also register every first and third Sunday of the month, coinciding with the special service for passport renewals in the morning. Although the registration period is for one year, I encourage everyone to register early and not to wait until the last minute to have their names included in the roster of those eligible to vote in 2013, said Amb. Luis Cruz. This will prevent potential problems associated with rushed applications, he added. Registrants only need to present a valid proof of Philippine citizenship, such as a passport. Those who intend to change their voting places in 2013, such as those returning for good to the Philippines, can also have their records transferred by the Philippine Embassy. Mobile registration services, done alongside with mobile passport services, to other parts of South Korea will be announced later on. For inquiries, please email seoulpe@philembassy-seoul.com.
