SCIENCE
Chemistry students spark young minds with experiments
By KEN GRABOWSKI
Staff Writer
see EXPERIMENTS page 2

MAnisTee Most people will agree that there was some defining point in their education that inspired them to go into their chosen lifes work. if that pattern holds true, then there might be some budding scientists who will emerge in the future from the present third grade class at Jefferson elementary school after the Manistee High school

Advanced placement (Ap) chemistry class led by Ryan ODonnell put on a science presentation. ODonnell said it is becoming a tradition for his class to wow the third graders with some interesting scientific experiments. This is the second year of doing this, and it is something i did back when i was in high school, ODonnell said. i really liked the idea when we did it, and for the past two years the teachers here have been nice enough to let us come and do it. ODonnell pointed out that for many of those students it is the first time they get to see some laboratory-type experiments and the whole idea is to get their interest

Nathalie Kenny gives students the opportunity for a close view of what she created in her experiment. up and running on science. However, he did give the elementary students a warning to wait until they were in chemistry class to try some of these experiments, and to never try to duplicate them at home. We thought it would be a good idea to let the kids see some interesting science, and hopefully that will pique their interest in it and when they get a few years older they will take classes like the AP Chemistry, ODonnell said. The idea of putting on the presentation appeared to be just as appealing to the high school students as it was to the elementary ones. They had a great time explaining the experiment and then making little eyes open wide with the interesting things they had to show them. My students kind of tell me which experiments are appealing to them, so they come up with the ideas based on demonstrations they have seen in class, ODonnell said. This is really something that I would like to continue in the future for the kids. Besides getting the chance to see all the experiments, ODonnell gave the Jefferson Elementary students an explanation at their level of what chemistry is and why it is important to study it. He pointed out the importance in the world of all the chemicals and elements they study in class. However, what really drove home the points for the younger students was some very well done presentations by the AP Chemistry students. The older students were very good about explaining exactly what they were doing and kept the elementary students sitting on the edge of their seats, wondering what was coming next. There were green things flowing out of chemistry bottles, flames shooting in the air, bangs and just about every other possible surprise that surely will put the interest in some young minds to follow suit several years from now when it is their turn to take chemistry.

Choose the right seat for children

NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS SYNDICATE
U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood recently announced the launch of a series of new public service announcements (PSAs) released in partnership with the Ad Council that promote child car safety among parents of children ages newborn to 12. According to the Department of Transportations National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 1 through 12 years old. From 2006 to 2010, 4,028 children ages 12 and younger were killed in crashes and another estimated 660,000 children were injured in crashes involving a passenger vehicle. However, NHTSA reports that child restraints in the vehicle saved the lives of an estimated 9,611 children ages 4 and younger from 1975 to 2010. While safety is our top priority for everyone on our roadways, were calling on parents to do everything they can to protect our most vulnerable passengers, said Secretary LaHood. These new public service announcements will encourage parents to choose the right seat for their children and properly secure them every time they get behind the wheel. Working with the Ad Council as part of an ongoing campaign to ensure child car safety, NHTSA unveiled new PSAs that will air on television, radio, online and in outdoor advertising nationwide. The Right Seat effort aims to make sure all parents and caregivers are properly securing children ages 12 and under in the right car restraint (rear-facing, forward-facing, booster, seat belt) for their age and size. Targeting parents and caregivers who think their children are already using the right car seats, the key message of the PSAs is Parents who really know it all, know for sure their child is in the right car seat. The proper use of a child seat is the most effective way to keep a child safe in a moving vehicle, said NHTSA Administrator David Strickland. Parents and caregivers should always use a child seat and, based on NHTSAs updated guidelines, should keep their children in their current seats for as long as possible before moving them up to the next type of seat. Coinciding with the release of the new PSAs, NHTSA also launched Parents Central, a new one-stop-shop website with tools and resources for keeping children safe in and around cars. For more than 25 years, the Ad Council and NHTSA have worked together on consumer safety PSA campaigns. Previous campaigns targeted individual stages of child passenger safety; i.e., the LATCH system, booster seats and seat belts. The English-language PSAs were created pro bono by advertising agency Gotham, Inc. We are proud to partner with Secretary LaHood, Administrator Strickland and NHTSA to extend our more than 25-year partnership with NHTSA by releasing new PSAs that address the absolute importance of child car safety, said Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of the Ad Council.

Youth stepping up as environmental ambassadors

NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS SYNDICATE
When it comes to protecting the environment, the younger generations involvement is sometimes limited to recycling paper and picking up trash. At 4-H, however, youth are tapping into their math, science, engineering and leadership skills to make a positive impact on their environment. Birch Run High School in Saginaw County, Mich., was paying to remove the used cooking oil from the cafeteria without any thought as to how it could be reused. Five teens in the schools 4-H Club came up with a plan to collect the used cooking oil and turn it into bio-diesel fuel that could run some of their school buses. The community joined in by donating its used cooking oil and the program now has 2,500 gallons of used vegetable oil to turn into bio-diesel fuel. In San Leandro, Calif., another group of 4-Hers decided to reduce its communitys environmental footprint. Californians use hundreds of thousands of tons of polystyrene each year for packaging food, which accounts for a large percentage of the litter recovered from storm drains. By educating restaurants, consumers and public officials about the negative effects of using non-biodegradable plastics, the 4-Hers convinced the community to use alternative products. Across the country in Oxford County, Maine, 200 students at the 4-H Camp & Learning Center are building underwater robots to identify milfoil a weedlike substance that grows in fresh water. As an invasive species in the regions 11 lakes and ponds, milfoil can prevent fishing and swimming, and contaminates clean drinking water. The 4-Hers use a video camera and GPS technology to identify the milfoil, so they can deal with the problem. These 4-Hers also do their part to educate the public about the environmental dangers of not cleaning off boats properly the leading cause of milfoil buildup. According to The 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development, conducted by Tufts University, compared to their peers, youth in 4-H are nearly two times more likely to plan to go to college, are three times more likely to contribute to their communities, and are more likely to pursue studies or a career in science, engineering or computer technology. 4-Hs positive youth development programs are developed by the nations 111 land-grant universities, and provide young people with first-hand experiences in learning how to limit humanitys impact on the environment. By taking part, youth are prepared to make a difference. For more information, visit www.4-h.org.
