EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The used car market in the country is characterized by the following: A ) The business is entirely in the unorganized sector. Therefore four major channels for in used car business: 1 . used car dealers/brokers 2. classifieds in newspapers 3. buying/selling to from personal acquaintances or relatives. 4. sale from organized dealerships In most large markets the bulk of business is handeled by brokers/unorganized sector. B ) The business is highly fragmented. For example , delhi has over 1500 active brokers with most of them buying and selling 4 6 vehicles per month. There are some semi organized players in west delhi and south like Popular Car Bazar (Mumbai) and T.S.Mahalingam and Sons(Chennai) C ) Brokers operate within their neighbourhood any rely mainly on personal contacts for business. D ) The services provided by the broker are highly suspected and unreliable. Various unethical practices likes replacing original parts with spurious parts, tempering with the odometer reading, presenting fake buyers/sellers etc. is common E ) Most transactions are on commission basis. Brokers hold few vehicles in stock.

F ) Little or no refurbishment is done on the vehicles. G ) The brokers provide no after sales support. However, the broker takes care of all transfer formalities.

H ) Used car prices vary considerably from city to city are volatile. By and large, the prices have been coming down regularly in past two three years Maruti true value have been running exchange programmes from time to time. In such cases, they ties up with brokers for buying used vehicles.

MARKET INSIGHT
Surveys of the market and customers have revealed the following: 1 ) The quoted price is the single most important factor in consideration for a seller. 2 ) The seller will shop around with 3 4 persons/brokers to try and get the best price. In large , customers prefer to sell the vehicle to an acquaintance. 3 ) The broker have the advantage of convenience and reach. They have the disadvantage of unreliability and lack of credibility. 4 ) The important concern for a buyer of used car is price along with reliability of the vehicle. 5 ) the buyer is willing to pay a premium for assurance of reliability in the form of warrenty, free services, etc. From the above , it is clear that the exchange is the most crucial part in the entire chain.

Role of true value

The role of maruti is in facilitating the introduction of a organized process of upgrading and existing maruti customer to a new maruti customer and selling of the used car thus obtained to a used car buyer. The usage of the maruti brand name and maruti dealers in an organized manner in such programme would increasw its impact many fold. Keeping the above in mind a brand called MARUTI TRUE VALUE has been developed for the exchange and used car programme at maruti.

ADVANTAGE OF AN ORGANISED EXCHANGE AND USED CAR PROGRAMME FOR TRUE VALUE
1 ) Will increase the sale of maruti models by encouraging existing maruti users to upgrade another maruti model. 2 ) will increase customer traffic at maruti truevalue 3 ) will inspire confidence in maruti customers about the facility of reselling of their maruti car. 4 ) as acompetitive advantage : the existing maruti base is an attractive target for all competitors. It is therefore important to retain this base within the maruti brand umbrella. 5 ) with the help maruti control the price of maruti used cars. 6 ) dealers gets a used maruti car customer who will be a potential new maruti buyer in future.
