Jaydens Minecraft Custom Map Guide

This guide was made and created by Jayden Bailey, using the aliases of JaydenBadBoii and L3gendGam3r. Please do not redistribute this as your own, because it is annoying for me to put time into making a guide and then someone claims it as their own. Thanks! THIS GUIDE IS NOT YET COMPLETE.

Making a custom map is never easy, which is why I have created this guide for you. So lets get straight into it - starting with some quick fire tips: DONT make a custom map on a flatmap, UNLESS you are willing to create the scenery yourself. Flatmaps look horrible on custom maps if you dont decorate them properly, and not a lot of maps do so keep this in mind. ALWAYS make sure that you disable any mods you are using before you attempt to create a map. It is annoying when people download your map but get white/black screens because theres an item/block or something related to a mod that they havent got so they cannot play your map. NEVER use a mod that adds items or blocks to the game. This is an expansion from the previous point. Doing this will possibly corrupt your saves and make the game unplayable. REMEMBER to use the /reset command if you are using Singleplayer Commands to help you create your map.

Okay, now those are out of the way it should be pretty straight forward from here onwards. This guide is designed to advice you on how to create your map, what you can include and how you can set it out. Most of this guide is based on what other successful custom maps do correctly, so that you can be successful just like them.

Mods Modifications to the game are fun and enjoyable, but some of them actually help you make the best map you can. Ive put two of the most important map-making mods below that will not corrupt your saves but will help you design that perfect map youre looking to make: Copyright 2012 Jayden Bailey, JaydenBadBoii, L3gendGam3r. http://www.youtube.com/user/L3gendGam3r

TooManyItems [Forum Page]: An in-game inventory editor created by Marglyph that is designed to help you spawn items and blocks into the game, even while playing without any mods or creative mode. It has been around for a while, and most people know what it is by now. Singleplayer Commands [Forum Page]: A ton of commands for your enjoyment by simo_415. Fly around the scenery, noclip straight through walls, and even break blocks with one punch! There are plenty of commands that are useful to building a map, so we gave them their own section of this guide which you can see later on.

If youve never used mods before then now is a good time to learn more about them if youre going to make a map, because theyre quite vital and I can almost guarantee that every single map you see on YouTube or on a forum will be created using some form of mod. But sometimes, people cheat a little. I wouldnt call it cheating, Id call it bypassing un-necessary block placing and destroying, etc. One of the most common forms of this is terrain editing. You can edit the terrain in-game (I dont just mean the basic break and place) and out of the game too. Ive listed two of the most used terrain editing mods or plugins below: WorldEdit [Forum Page, Bukkit Page]: This great client and server mod/plugin will expand your game tons. It will let you create walls and floors easily, as well as giving you amazing abilities that prove useful when making a custom map. The server version of WorldEdit is practically the same, but for use on Bukkit servers. Weve given WorldEdit and Multiplayer its own section later on, so you can learn more about this great mod/plugin and how you can use it on a multiplayer server. MCEdit [Forum Page]: This tool is an example of editing the terrain outside of the actual game. Simply download and run, and youve got the entire world at your fingertips (literally). You can create flat terrains, raised terrains, copy structures, make buildings, change sign texts, noclip through blocks and more completely outside the Minecraft game! This is mostly used for big builds.

Make sure to visit the Useful Links at the bottom of this guide to find out how to install all of the mods listed above and more.

Singleplayer Commands If you are not planning to use this mod, you can skip this section. This small section of the guide will tell you some of the commands that will help you create a great looking map in a small amount of time. So, here are some commands and descriptions of what they do: Copyright 2012 Jayden Bailey, JaydenBadBoii, L3gendGam3r. http://www.youtube.com/user/L3gendGam3r

/climb Allows you to climb a surface without a ladder /cyclepainting Allows you to cycle through the painting you are pointing at /enchant <list|remove|add TYPE [LEVEL]> - Allows you to enchant an item /falldamage Turns fall damage on/off /fly [SPEED] Allows you to fly (and if you specify a speed, at that speed.) /freecam Allows you to freecam around the map /extinguish Puts out nearby fire /freeze Freezes mobs so they cant move or attack you /gamemode Toggle gamemode (switch to creative mode and back) /hardcore Toggle hardcore mode (switch to hardcore mode and back) /heal <HEALTH> - Heal yourself using a simple command /home Teleport to the maps spawn point /instantmine Allows you to mine anything with one hit /instantkill Allows you to kill anything with one hit /noclip Turns noclip mode on/off /setspawn Allows you to set the maps spawn point as the position youre standing in /spawnportal Spawns a nether portal near the players position /xp Allows you to set/add/change/remove XP from the player Simple really, right? As you can see, Singleplayer Commands give you access to almost anything you need to create a custom map in Minecraft. Lets move on.

WorldEdit If you are not planning to use this mod, you can skip this section. WorldEdit extends the functionality of Singleplayer Commands, but it can also work in multiplayer too. It allows you to have extensive control over the blocks and terrain in your world, simply by typing a few commands. The default position wand is: Wooden Axe If you equip a Wooden Axe (you can use //wand to obtain it) while WorldEdit is running on your world or server, you can set positions that will later be useful when you are using commands. Simply left-click to set position one and right-click to set position two.

The default teleportation item is: Compass If you equip a Compass while WorldEdit is running on your world or server, you can teleport through blocks and more. Left-click to jump straight to the block youre looking at, and right-click to go through the block youre looking at! I will put some tutorials and resources for WorldEdit in the Useful Links section of this guide, so that you can get started easily.

Types/Genres of Maps Adventure (ADV) An adventure map consists of a story and some characters. This is the most common type of custom map out there, and the most entertaining as well. You can also incorporate mods into adventure maps like how Deep Space Turtle Chase by the Voxel Box, but it will mean you will have to make a new launcher or download with mod files, etc. It can be a pain for the players if you do this. Puzzle (PUZ) The second common type of map - puzzle maps! As the name implies, puzzle maps contain tons of challenges and puzzles to test the player and more. Recently, puzzle maps have been starting to be given two player support, so why dont you? For an example, check out Its Better Together. Complete the Monument (CTM) Originally from Vechs Super Hostile series, a Complete the Monument map is great fun but can be time consuming for you and the player. Parkour (PAR/PARK) Parkour maps have a similar style to the game Mirrors Edge. It usually consists of the player jumping from block to block without falling, or from building to building. It could also contain free running and other stunts like jumping over lava or jumping off a cliff and trying to land in a small section of water. Survival (SURV) These type of maps are usually mini-games and heavily redstone dependant. Its mainly where the player is against waves of enemies and has to survive. Mini-game (MINI/MG) Fairly similar to a survival map, mini-games are usually defence, but some resemble real-life games such as slot machines and more. This type of map usually gets boring after a while,

even though it takes a while to setup everything with redstone mini-games are a ton more dependent on redstone than survival maps!

DONT DO SKYBLOCK! Most custom map ideas have already been done, so be unique! Dont be another one of the people who copies Skyblock

Like seriously, I cant tell you how many times Ive seen custom maps that are just blatant copies of the Skyblock map. Pretty much all of them are just epic fails, and most have hardly any downloads. Its worthless dedicating your time to making a map like Skyblock that probably wont last a while because youll rush straight into it and forget how you can make it harder for the player to get all the resources, blocks and items that they need to survive.
