Brothers and Sisters, I have Good News: Wherever we have wanderedwherever we have beenwherever we are headedor however we might feelJesus has been there. Not only has Jesus been there, God promises to join us there. God joins us wherever life might take us through the resurrected Christ. It might sound strange to hear the resurrection mentioned on this first Sunday of Lent. After all, this is the time of year when we as a church focus, not on the resurrection of Christ, but rather on the intersection between Jesus life and our lives as individuals and a church. Lent is when we focus on Jesus life, ministry, trial, conviction, and death. Its when we intentionally reflect upon our place in Jesus storyin Gods story. Lent is when we reflect upon our humannessour sinfulnessand the ways that we have wandered as individuals and a church. Lent is certainly not when we focus our attention on the resurrection. For many of us, Lent is a somber and reflective 40 days when we are given the space to wander through our own wildernessfor many of us, Lent is a difficult time of year as we reflect on how we have wanderedremember the areas of life that cause pain, sorrow, or sadnesswe feel the pain of illness, loneliness, joblessness, depression, or any other challenges life might have given us over the year. For many of us, Lent is a time of year of disciplineof going withoutof giving up of something we love. For many of us, Lent is an intentionally difficult time of year. This morning we read Marks account of Jesus baptism. If it sounds familiar, it should. This is the fourth time we have read this passage in the past three months. We

read it in Advent and Epiphany and now todayin Lent. In each setting something different is noticedand today, as we begin our Lenten journey, I imagine we are drawn to the 40 days Jesus spends in the wilderness. The same Spirit that descends upon Jesus like a dove and reveals his divine nature to the world during his baptismis the same Spirit that sends him into the wilderness immediately. There is no potluck after Jesus baptism. There is no celebration. There is just the reality of Jesus wandering through the wilderness for 40 days. It is no secret as to why we read Jesus baptism story again todayon this first Sunday of Lent. The gospel lesson today reminds us that our Savior wandered through the wilderness for 40 days and not only did he surviveGod was with himGod was there. Jesus might have been wandering through the wilderness, but he was certainly not alone. The angels cared for him. Just as the gospel lesson reminds us that our Savior was not alone during his 40 days wandering through the wildernesswe too should remember that we are not alone as we embark on this Lenten season. We are not alone as we wander through our own wilderness. We are not alone as we reflect upon and seek forgiveness for how we have wandered. We are not along as we revisit the areas in our life that cause pain, sorrow, or sadness. We are not along as we begin Lenten disciplines of going without, or giving up. We are not alone as we begin this intentionally difficult time of year. We are not alone because Jesus in his own life has been there. Brothers and Sisters, wherever we find ourselves over the course of the next 40 dayswherever we might wander in this wilderness know that Jesus, through the movement of the Holy Spirit, will join us there. Whether we seek forgiveness, healing, or strength, know that Jesus has been thereand know that the resurrected Christ will join us thereand thanks be to God for that. Amen.

En el nombre del Creador, Redentor y Sustentador, Amn. Hermanos y hermanas, tengo Buenas Nuevas: Dondequiera que hayamos vagadodondequiera que hayamos estadodondequiera seamos dirigidoscomo quiera que nos sintamosJess ha estado ah. No solo Jess ha estado ah, sino que tambin las promesas de Dios nos unen ah. Dios se nos une dondequiera que la vida pueda tomarnos, mediante la resurreccin de Cristo. Puede ser extrao escuchar mencionar la resurreccin en este primer Domingo de Cuaresma. Despus de todo, este es el momento del ao cuando nosotros como iglesia nos enfocamos, no en la resurreccin de Cristo, sino mejor dicho en la interseccin entre la vida de Jess y nuestras vidas como personas y como iglesia. Cuaresma es cuando nos enfocamos en la vida, ministerio, proceso, conviccin y muerte de Jess. Es cuando deliberadamente reflexionamos sobre nuestro lugar en la historia de Jessen la historia de Dios. Cuaresma es cuando reflexionamos sobre nuestra humanidadnuestra maldad y las formas en que nos hemos desviado como personas y como iglesia. Ciertamente, Cuaresma no es cuando enfocamos nuestra atencin en la resurreccin. Para muchos de nosotros, Cuaresma son 40 das sombros que reflejan cuando se nos da el espacio para vagar a travs de nuestro propio desiertopara muchos de nosotros, Cuaresma es un tiempo difcil en el ao ya que reflejamos cmo hemos vagadorecordamos las reas de la vida que nos causan pena, dolor, o tristezasentimos la pena de la enfermedad, soledad, desempleo, depresin, o muchos otros retos que la vida pueda traernos en este ao. Para muchos de nosotros, Cuaresma es un tiempo en el ao de disciplinade ir fuerade renunciar a algo que amamos. Para muchos de nosotros, Cuaresma es deliberadamente un tiempo difcil en el ao. Esta maana lemos el relato de Marcos acerca del bautismo de Jess. Esto suena familiar, y lo es. Esta es la cuarta ocasin en que hemos ledo este pasaje en los ltimos tres meses. Lo lemos en Adviento, en Epifana y hoy tambinen Cuaresma. En cada ocasin hemos notado algo diferentey hoy, como empezamos nuestra jornada de Cuaresma, imagino que somos conducidos por los 40 das que Jess pas en el desierto. El mismo Espritu que desciende sobre Jess como paloma y que revela su naturaleza divina al mundo durante su bautismoes el mismo Espritu que lo enva al desiertoinmediatamente. No hay comida despus del bautismo de Jess.

No hay celebracin. Solo est la realidad de Jess vagando por el desierto por 40 das. No es un secreto del por qu lemos la historia del bautismo de Jess hoy una vez msen este primer Domingo de Cuaresma. La lectura del evangelio nos recuerda que nuestro Salvador vag a travs del desierto por 40 das y no solo sobreviviDios estaba con l Dios estaba ah. Jess pudo haber estado vagando a travs del desierto, pero ciertamente l no estaba solo. Los ngeles cuidaban de l. As como la lectura del evangelio nos recuerda que nuestro Salvador no estaba solo durante su andar a travs del desierto.tambin nosotros debemos recordar que no estamos solos al iniciar esta estacin de Cuaresma. No estamos solos al vagar a travs de nuestro propio desierto. No estamos solos mientras reflexionamos y buscamos el perdn por cmo hemos deambulado. No estamos solos mientras revisamos las reas de nuestra vida que causan pena, dolor, o tristeza. No estamos solos mientras empezamos las disciplinas de Cuaresma de ir fuera, o de renunciar. No estamos solos mientras iniciamos deliberadamente este tiempo difcil del ao. No estamos solos porque Jess en su propia vida ha estado ah. Hermanos y hermanas, dondequiera que nos encontremos en el curso de los prximos 40, dasdondequiera que vaguemos en este desierto, sabemos que Jess, mediante el mover del Espritu Santo, se nos reunir ah. Sea que busquemos perdn, sanidad, o fortaleza, sabemos que Jess ha estado ahy sabemos que la resurreccin de Cristo nos unir ahy gracias sean dadas a Dios por esto. Amn.
