Topic:
Creating a Seam Weld
Topic details:
There are two important things to remember while creating seam welds in HyperMesh. 1) Seam welds in HyperMesh can be created only on surfaces 2) The line used to define the seam weld should not extend beyond the surfaces being welded. If these two points are kept in mind, one can easily create seam welds.

Seam welds are typically created going from the edge of one surface to the face of another surface. Thus the first step in properly creating the seam welds is to properly identify the surfaces. For this illustration let us refer to the surfaces as source and destination. The source surface is the one whose edge the weld lies on. The destination surface is the one on whose face the welds are projected on(Figure 1). The first step is to project the weld edge of the source surface on to the destination surface. This is to properly define the weld line. 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) Go to the collectors panel Create a new component with no card image, called seam_weld Go to Tools project to surface Select the weld edge Do a lines >> duplicate >> current component For the to surface select the destination surface For along vector use surface normal Project.
Figure 2: Projecting the weld lines onto the destination surface Now that the weld line has been defined, the next step is to create the connectors. Use the following steps: 1) Go to 1D connectors seam seam 2) For line select projected weld line 3) For spacing use an appropriate value (in this case .5)
Page 2
5) Use a tolerance greater than the distance between the components (in this case 2) 6) Select the appropriate weld type (in this case rigid) 7) Create (Figure 3) Once the connectors have been created, you can go ahead and mesh the surfaces (Figure 4).
