The SHD series eliminates the two major weaknesses of the large diameter A604 & A606 Chrysler converters: leaks caused by cracked converter covers and distorted lockup pistons due to pressure spikes.
OEM designed covers develop cracks around the mounting pads under normal driving conditions. ATF leaks through the cracks resulting in a comeback. We use a redesigned steel cover to eliminate this weakness. The steel cover has 8 bolt holes so that it will fit the early offset bolt patterns and the late even spaced bolt patterns.

An upgraded steel piston eliminates the negative effects of a spiked pressure lockup apply. The SHD converters have a heavy duty steel lockup piston that will not distort from high lockup pressure spikes.

Pump RPM Increased TCC Activated TCC Off (TCC Off) Erratic high line pressure during torque converter apply will deflect the lockup piston (refer to ATRA Bulletin #429) . A deflected piston is distorted by high line rise (120-140 psi) and results in a series of failures: the clutch lining fragments and clogs the filter and lube circuits causing planet drive train failure; the piston contacts the converter cover thus generating metal particles which will clog the valve body; code 38 (TCC control) is generated.

Note: These units are not available for the 974/ 975 style 10 converters. However, the
small diameter converters are not prone to develop cracks around the mounting pads or lockup piston distortion.
