• A natural disaster is any sort of disaster

that can come in numerous forms and
intensities.
• Preparing for a natural disaster is crucial
for the survival of anyone involved.
• Natural Disasters can and will happen all
over the world and at any time of the day
or year.

Tornadoes
• Tornadoes can occur • Differ from hurricanes

in the periods in the fact that

• A major snowstorm
• Characterized by the
following:
– High wind speed
– Duration of 4 hrs or
more
– 20 + cm of snow
– Blowing snow
– Low Visibility

Hurricanes
• Usually have the following:

– 2 strong parts with an eye in the center
– Usually only occur in the Atlantic, and
Caribbean
– Are arranged along a mesoscale event
– Usually can be from small to very heavy.

Cyclones
• These normally have the

following:
– In the pacific area, they do
not occur in the Caribbean
or Atlantic
– They are usually
counterclockwise in the
Southern Hemisphere and
the storms up in Northern
Hemisphere are clockwise.

Monsoons
• Usually you will find:

– In Asian and Eastern
parts of Africa
– Usually the climate is
a very long period of
dry weather found by a
short period of VERY
wet weather.
– People can be killed
during monsoons.

Earthquakes
• Earthquakes are:
– Shaking and trembling
– Caused along the fault
lines
– Two types, can be a
subduction, or one that
glides
– A richter scale is used
to determine

Forest Fires
• Forest Fires can be:

– Made by humans being
very inattentive to the
situation around them
– Can be made naturally
from nature or pests like
the “pine beetle”
– Can be made by weather
i.e.: wind and lightning
– Last year BC had it worst

• Floods can be caused by:

– Weather storms
– Backed up sewage or storm drains from
leaves and other products
– Negligence of humans

Snow Squalls
• Snow Squalls are:

– Brief but powerful
snowstorms that can
occur from the lakes in
the northern midwest
and the central
Canada around the
great lakes
– Can follow same

Extreme Cold
• Usually is
– When there is serious
wind chills or when
there is serious cold
temperatures outside.
– You should wear the

• Extreme Heat:
– When the temperatures get unseasonably hot
and it can occur i.e. summer in Chicago
– When there is very strong UV rays

• These can be similar

• This is when your skins can get frost bite if you

stay out in the cold too long
• This is the temperature
of what it feels like against the skin.

when there is warmer
