MA Film and Television: Theory, Culture and Industry 1 year full-time: September 2012 - August 2013 Part-time: 2-5 years, beginning September 2012

The Westminster Film School is a vibrant meeting place for students, industry professionals and film theorists. It provides world-class courses in film and television production and film theory at undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as the opportunity to undertake doctoral and postdoctoral research in theoretical and practical disciplines. The MA Film and Television is the longest running postgraduate course in the country in the study and research of film and television and retains its strong reputation within the film sector. In addition to theoretical, cultural and critical dimensions, the course offers an overview of the international film industry both historic and contemporary, including production, distribution, exhibition and marketing, from mainstream commercial productions to alternative, experimental and independent film, video and digital work. Past and present students from all over the world are employed in the film and television sectors: as small-scale producers and film and video makers, or working for larger organisations and TV companies as script consultants, programmers, executives and film educators. Both part-time and

full-time students have made the course the basis for continuing studies as Doctorate students both in the UK and internationally. Throughout the courses history students have taken the course to develop and expand their teaching careers in the further and higher education sectors. Course content. The course is built on a series of taught modules, each requiring written research essays or projects for assessment and all students embark upon a 10,000-word research thesis, in an area of their specialist interest, to complete their studies. This is an option-based course offering students the opportunity to choose from the range of modules on offer from the three pathways: theory, culture and industry, though you are not required to follow any particular pathway in the choice of modules you make. All full-time students: Take 6 taught modules, 3 in Semester 1 and 3 in Semester 2, from some of the following: Culture: European Cinema since 1945; Issues in British Film Culture; Television Drama; Television Comedy Industry: Cinema: Distribution and Exhibition; Contemporary World Cinema; The Hollywood Studio System Theory: Authorship, Genre and Realism; Experimental Film Theory and Practice; Structuralism and Psychoanalysis All students have a free choice from among the modules on offer in each semester. Not all of these modules are liable to be on offer in any one year but you will have plenty of modules to choose from. Then, The Research Thesis Module (10-12,000 words) that consists of some preparatory sessions in Semesters 1 and 2 and then the completion of it during the summer period. Part-time students: You have from two to five years to complete the degree. You must complete six taught modules and can take one module at a time from those on offer or double up and complete your studies more rapidly. No taught module is compulsory for you to take. Some modules will be on offer in the evenings at the Regent Street site of the University, for greater convenience to part-time students, while other modules will be available during the day at the Harrow Campus site. The only core (compulsory) module for you to take is the final Research Thesis module, which you research, write and complete after you have completed the taught modules. You have two semesters to complete the Research Thesis module. Note: During the year 2011-12 we may be restructuring the module curricula above in order to offer a similar set of topics but delivered in a different way with some titles of modules changed as a consequence. The general range of topics will remain the same and we will update students who have been accepted onto the course of any major changes Entry requirements Applicants are required to have, or be finishing, a good undergraduate degree or, exceptionally, previous relevant experience; full-time students from abroad must possess proven ability to write English to a high standard. Students whose first language is not English require IELTS to 6.5 or preferably 7

What some of our recent graduates have said about the course

The MA in Film and Television was a truly thrilling experience. I acquired solid background knowledge about film, film movements and their social and historical contexts. Also, I met very special and interesting people from all over the world who have become my best friends. I very much appreciated the fact that in class everybody was encouraged to critically engage with the topics that were presented. I would recommend this course to every one who wants to start working in the film business. Marcella Gasche Germany Marcella has since worked as an assistant producer, researcher and translator for programmes for the BBC and WDR (Germany) What I personally liked at the course is the overall impression that it is all about people who are passionate about film and television and they are able to offer that enthusiasm to the students. The whole atmosphere for me was inspiring; I took industry as well as theoretical modules, but each time I enjoyed the way the course has been structured and how topics always offered students space for quality discussions, questions and insight into the broader picture. We were always encouraged from our tutors to do our own research for areas we found interesting and it is really rewarding when you are able to do what you are really interested in plus to feel that you can count on help and support during your work. The international component of the group was also beneficial, because it was great opportunity to found out about certain topics from different angles, not just different countries and continents, but also different background areas: some people with work experience in production, marketing, distribution or creative writing. At the beginning of the course I had only one thing in common with my course mates and that was passion for films; after one year, the thing I am sure we will have in common forever is our friendship... The MA in Film and Television has been the best choice for my career. I acquired a solid theoretical background in film and television while improving my writing, reading and communication skills. When I finished the MA I quickly found a job in television thanks to the self-confidence and maturity that I gained doing this MA. Irene Martin Spain Irene has been working for a Spanish TV company in London and for the BBC After having worked in the film industry for 3 years I missed having time to deal with the subject of

film in an academic way so much that I decided to go back to Westminster where I had done my BA(Hons). I can strongly recommend this course to anyone what has a serious interest in cinema! The choice of modules was varied, including everything from experimental films to the Hollywood studio system. And the dedication and enthusiasm of the tutors for their topics was rewarding and infectious. Through the course I discovered and learnt to appreciate new aspects of film. I enjoyed it so much that I am now looking to apply for a PhD based on my dissertation. Kathrin Vlasta Woodtli UK and Switzerland Kat has worked as assistant camera on Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) and is pursuing further research on her thesis project while also having a family This MA course gave me the chance to get to know the contemporary film industry; not only in UK, but also globally. Semesters 1 and 2 provide a whole range of modules from very theoretical cinematic subjects to industrial business issues. I chose both sorts of modules and knowledge and also the ability to analyse and examine questions. This is very important and helpful to me in the future for studying and working. Jiang Zhou China Jiang has been working in Beijing Personally, this year was an amazing experience. I feel it contributed me in so many different ways, academically, professionally and also socially. It was inspiring to be surrounded by true film lovers who got excited about the tiniest detail about a film. I believe that this course fits to anyone who wishes to study and teach films but also to people who wish to make films. And to sum it all up, if I could, I would have done it again! Avi Merkado Israel Avi has worked on a television animation series in Israel, is writing scripts and has just started teaching film at a school The experience of studying the MA Film and TV exceeded my expectations. It is rare to find a programme which so naturally balances being challenging and supportive. The courses most noticeable advantage is providing a stage for innovative thinking and self expression under the guidance of knowledgeable and professional academic staff. Yoli Kesten Israel Yoli has been pursuing further study in London I would recommend this course to anyone who wants an insight on the film and television industry. The subjects in the lectures were engaging. The atmosphere is friendly and there is room for debate and discussion. The tutors are accessible and enthusiastic and passionate about their lectures.
